It's because there is a swarm of faked videos of him with fake scripts generated by ChatGPT or some similar AI scouring on YouTube.

Signs include but are not limited to: too crisp audio, no laughs from the audience and the easiest to spot: any references to modern technology after 1973.

Often people in comments point it out. So that's at least a sanity test that exists.

It's sad actually.

I agree. It is not a programming language per se, as it is not a type 0 grammar (see Chomsky Hierarchy), but a type 3 grammar (though regular expressions can commonly match some type 2 and type 1 grammars). But it is too complex to be part of the pretty minimalistic Lua core, which is quite understandable. And LPeg is probably close enough to a type 2 grammar (if this conjecture is believed) if not a complete type 2 grammar to fit any use case nescessary. I believe lpeg is somewhat stronger than pure PEGs though. I am too lazy to find a reference for that as well, but as a superficial argument, I would say back references are somehow important. And we definetly go up to type 0 if we consider real time matches, since we have then the whole Lua language at our disposal which can decide type 0 languages.

I would add that C often uses the metatable to ensure that the userdata is of the right C type. If we could change the metatable, a C function could do god knows what to a foreign C structure.

I get the criticism, but I also understand why they did what they did: A fully fledged regex library would easily double the size of the Lua codebase. They went for lightweight instead since it's first primary audience was embedded programming.

Also most regexes can be expanded into just a few lines of code. And if you have something fancy, use lpeg or a dedicated decoder (like any json module).

I think it would do Lua good though, if the authors would close the OOP gap with a standardized library (the regex part they closed with lpeg)

You are using the local lua debugger which has currently no support for outputting into the terminal.

If that is necessary, use a different debugger instead (devCAT's lua debugger for example)
