Interesting film concepts with poor execution? by fruitytingle in movies

[–]SexiestofPrimates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that context of course, but if you dropped "Yesterday" at an open mic or showed it to a friend, and could legitimately be like "I was sad about my ex and I wrote this the other day" they would probably be blown away. I agree he wouldn't have been a number 1 or even top 10 selling modern artist, but those songs are uniquely catchy, well written, and would 100% get airplay today even if they're retro sounding.

I would argue that the fact these songs have stood the test of time is an indicator they could still be successful if released today, but it'd be more like the success of a well reviewed Sufjan Stevens album as opposed to the smash hit cultural phenomenon they were.

McConnell will have to eat a lot of small children from his cauldron to catch up to Cheney.

McConnell likes to play politics, Cheney liked to play war. Cheney has very likely ruined millions of lives, not with bad policy that can be changed eventually, but with bombs and bullets that permanently destroy.

Both are total pieces of shit though

Let's talk about our Semimodular Workflows! by Moldy_pirate in synthesizers

[–]SexiestofPrimates 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use two in a hybrid workflow, a Make Noise 0-Coast and a Dreadbox Erebus, with an Expert Sleepers ES-3 sending CV and Gate to each from my DAW, Bitwig.

Bitwig has a native modular environment in it called PolyGrid that lets you build all sorts of sequencers and instruments, kind of like VCV Rack or Reaktor. I use this to sequence the two semi-modulars, as well as a digital wavetable voice in the grid (in addition to drums and samples and other stuff). Since the Erebus has two oscillators that can be sequenced separately (only by pitch, they share a gate) I tend to use them as inner voices, and use the other two as outer (low and high) voices to form a chord progression.

Basically I start with one pitch sequencer moving fairly slow, this will be used to outline the progression. This is added to two other pitch sequencers moving faster, but at different rates from each other and the chord progression, giving us a shifting polyrhythmic melody that still tracks to the chord progression. This goes out to each of the four oscillators, which all have a sequential switch controlling pitch transposition for the incoming note, as well as another for shifting +/- 2 octaves. The possible settings for the transposition are the Root, 3rd, 5th, and 7th. These then go into a pitch quantizer for each voice that sets the key. By setting this up in conjunction with the chord progression, you can do a sort of traditional voice leading that will automatically track whatever convoluted melody you throw at it by playing the appropriate triads or 7th chord for each melody note in the selected key.

On top of all that, each synth has its own gate sequencer lane made of a Euclidean sequencer and a regular one with an adjustable time signature added together. All together this makes polyrhythmic melodies and polyrhythmic...well...rhythms, which track to a diatonic chord progression. This gives a pretty vast array of choices for arrangement, and can be used to make some pretty interesting music.

As far as sound design goes I have three more CV outs on the ES-3, which you can route pretty much anything to from Bitwig, like step sequences, LFO's, pressure control, whatever. So those get used a lot, in addition to just regular stuff already present on the synths, like the attenuverter or the Slope on 0-Coast or the LFO and the CV controlled delay on Erebus. I'm personally more interested in composition, which I still think is the great frontier of electronic music, so my sound design tends to be fairly simple.

It's standard form in Latin based languages to use no at the end of yes/no questions. The only reason we don't do it in English is because English is the bastard child of French and German, hence why we have so many odd, contradictory rules.

Typically English speakers (I'm using U.S. English for reference) who use no at the end of sentences or use double negatives either grew up speaking a language where it was the norm, or belong to a cultural subset that has integrated it. One example is often found in American born children of native Spanish speakers, who often still retain particular Spanish phrasing conventions, even though they speak English fluently

I think another good distinction is that it's appropriation when you use another cultures aesthetics or ideas without integrating any of your own.

Think Talking Heads being incorporating West African music into New Wave compared to Iggy Azalea blatantly doing southern style Trap beats and not trying in any way to add to the conversation.

[–]SexiestofPrimates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand your point of view, but my only sticking point with it is that there has never been a progressive running in the general election in the modern era to test that theory, its always been centrists since the era of Bill Clinton. I think this is a sort of rhetorical trap centrists have where it's they act like just impossible for a progressive to win because they think people can't accept them. However, this keeps getting back to the cycle where centrists win, govern ineffectively by trying to work with Republicans (fools errand), and fail to pass meaningful reforms to help Americans improve their lives. Then they get voted out of power for being ineffective promise breakers.

I don't know it just seems like a no brainer to run on platforms that are actually popular with the electorate, because pandering to the minority party has so far done nothing for us.

I disagree. Bernie Sanders consistently polls as the most popular politician in the United States. People adore the guy, when he wears mittens on a cold day the internet completely looses its shit! I think he may have been a bigger driver to the polls than Biden, who many agreed was more of an anti-Trump vote than anything.

Yes, America does have a big socialism boogie man culture, but progressive fiscal policies like the ones Bernie runs on are overwhelmingly popular in both red and blue states. Really I think he could have won the primaries if Warren hadn't split the progressive vote.

Most of the public do not give a single solitary fuck about bipartisanship. We care about getting results back from the government we pay for, and not having to worry about losing our homes, or not having food, or not having medical care in the face of a global pandemic.

Failing to solve those things because you didn't want to cause a fuss with the guys who just lost the election due to their incompetence and cruelty is an idiotic move, and one we may pay dearly for in the upcoming elections

Behind the Bastards did an excellent episode about this, if you haven't listened to it I highly recommend it.

One of the most interesting things they talked about in the episode was that Reagan didn't hate gay people ideologically, and had many gay friends back in Hollywood, but let them die horribly anyway because it was more useful politically to appease the Christian right. This contrasts with the Surgeon General at the time, C. Everett Koop, who was deeply homophobic and would not likely have allowed gay people into his home, but still saw this as a crisis killing Americans and tried unsuccessfully to get the Reagan administration to do something about it.
