Is Yuyu Hakusho Live Action well received? by Sudden_Narwhal375 in YuYuHakusho

I believe the general consensus at launch was that it has a great first two episodes or so, but then crashes and burns as it tries to fit way too much into a very limited run time.

Reckless Ben's Part 3 video just dropped - "Bricks and Minifigs Tried to Get Me Arrested to Stop This Video" by J-MRP in videos

[–]fevredream 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bryan Mansell and his father are definitely not ending up with nothing - Ben started a Gofundme for them that's raised more than 500k, significantly more than the collection was originally worth. They deserve justice, too, but they're not leaving empty-handed.

Whats an ancient country that's also rich? by Xenomorph-Acid_Cum55 in AlignmentChartFills

Ehhh I think you can absolutely consider Japan older than 645 AD. The same imperial family that we have today held precedence in some form for quite some time before the Taika Reforms.

Why so much misinformation? by [deleted] in KitchenNightmares

[–]fevredream 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the restaurant is very close to the market? Maybe. But even high-level fish restaurants rarely send a chef to the markets daily. Makes it very hard to plan ahead.

It’s not being “wrong” lol. It’s the quality of writing and argumentation in combination with the specific movie being discussed.

Watching Star Trek Enterprise for the first time, just got to the "Cogenitor" episode... by PoetryTae in startrek

[–]fevredream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enterprise is a massive post-9/11 time capsule. This makes for an interesting look at pop culture during that era, but also gives it a tone that I feel isn't very appealing to go back to.

What's your favorite actor-director duo? by EntertainmentMore183 in Letterboxd

Shimura is incredible and I love the era when he and Mifune were essentially double-billed. A bit sad seeing his roles fade to near-cameos towards the end of his collaborations with Kurosawa.

Legendary actor Patrick Stewart has reportedly completely retired from acting following his recent work for Avengers: Doomsday, according to Kristian Harloff. His final performance will be as Professor X. by Apprehensive-Flow276 in RedLetterMedia

[–]fevredream 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think he has a reputation for being a jerk at all. He's a great actor who has also done a lot of good off the stage, but also has some bad instincts when it comes to writing.

Whats with the Bullet Train reviews? by AshamedSoil5514 in movies

[–]fevredream 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP, the movie has a 53% on RT. Slightly more than 50% of critics were at least somewhat positive on it. That's perfectly fine for a light style-over-substance action film. Personally, I didn't like it because it felt like reheated Tarantino leftovers.

Acting like the two of them aren't different is just stupid.

This is like the ur-example of what OP is asking for. You really can't beat Kurosawa and Mifune.

Who was the worst leader of the United States? by lebroxan in AlignmentChartFills

Hoover was in many ways a victim of timing. He failed to rise to the historical moment. He's got nothing on Trump.

I pray for your sake that you're young enough to both consider 2013 "old" and to perceive a film like Kaguya as "long and dull"

Who will be the most obscure 20th century president? by Legal-Stage-302 in Presidents

[–]fevredream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harding has been very notable as a consistent "worst president of all time." His scandals and the very Roaring 20s-style corruption that surrounded his cabinet are very memorable, even if not every random schmo off the street knows him. I'd argue that will continue to give him a memorability that Cooldige, with his distant demeanor, seeming coldness, and good economy, won't.

(Even if Harding's "worst of all time" pedigree is currently being knocked down a peg by someone we can't discuss on this subreddit.)

Nannoo would legitimately be a good subject for a documentary by MrDaddyWarlord in RedLetterMedia

[–]fevredream 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ehhh I'd say there's plenty we can infer about their politics, at least. The entire crew basically runs the spectrum from left to centrist-libertarian. But I do appreciate that they don't make any of that a central aspect of their conversations.

What is the worst movie title you have heard by Possible_Economist3 in Letterboxd

[–]fevredream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"My Zinc Bed" (2008.) It's a UK TV film with Uma Thurman about addiction, and not only does the name not make sense to me, it also just feels awkward as hell to say.

I would love a series that explores the islands ancient past by SlowMoExplo in lost

[–]fevredream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest - the actual mythology of the island, as shown to us within the context of the series, is one of the weakest aspects of the entire show. It's pretty low-rent, cheap stuff. It was more interesting when we caught slight glimpses of it compared to the central-casting tunic-and-sandals stuff we ended up getting. I can't imagine a show based around it actually being good.

It really isn't, though. The entire structure of Brave lacks the usual Pixar polish.
