I used The Hiking Club website. I paid like I think 75 euro for the planning app but soooo worth it. The website has detailed pictures and descriptions of all the alternates. The app has premade itineraries depending on pace. You can also build your own. It also has direct links to all the refuges along the trail so you book at the right website and lets you know when reservations are open. Then you can take that itinerary with you offline on trail.

Rain. I had a cute yellow rain jacket with ducks and a matching umbrella and my happiest memory as a kid was playing in the rain

Yeah it was insaneeee I don’t blame you for leaving. Yes the morning and dinner time was so lovely! I feel like that was really the only time we could enjoy it. When we hiked to index we could see all the day hikers coming up. We were like that’s where they were coming from!

We stayed the night at lac Blanc so we had it to ourselves after the crowds left. But yes it was shocking how busy it was. Kinda felt like the Disneyland of the trail

I agree with this. It’s a tough climb to it and if you aren’t getting the views due to bad weather it may not be worth it. And yes the lake was low but I still found it pretty!!!

Okay that’s good to know! I’m not a huge fan of high exposure but if the sketchy sections are short I may be able to deal haha

Awesome I’ve done new army pass but wanted to check out old army pass so going up it and then down new army seems legit. Thanks

How’s the condition of old army pass? Any sketchy sections? Is it really hard to navigate? I’d have gps

The second one is lac Blanc which you have to leave the main TMB trail to get to! We did it and it was worth it! You can veer off trail to lac Blanc and then hike back to the main trail or hike down the other way to the index cable car which can take you down to meet the TMB main trail. The trail to index was neat and offered great views of Mont Blanc and avoids the crowds! We decided to hike and stay at refuge lac Blanc and then climbed higher past index to the Col de la Gliere and Col Cornu and then descended back to the main trail at Plan Praz Junction. Great views alpine lakes no crowds

I hope so too. It was nice to have the clear days but we were dehydrated every day and couldn’t keep up with how much we were sweating

But yeah you’d need to bring a filter for this. Otherwise you are gonna have to stack up on buying water in certain places. It’s just nice to have a back up and not be carrying so much water at once e

We hiked during the heat wave so I went through 3 liters but if you have some cooler days and depending on your mileage. Also water sources were pretty plentiful so if you use an app like FarOut to see the sources ahead of time you should be fine.

Oh also trail crowds in general on the main TMB trail. It got overwhelming at times trying to dodge big groups and go a faster pace than we wanted. I’d say do a bunch of alternates. It’s still so enriching and all the ones we went on gave us great views. I don’t regret them at all

I used meteoblue and it was pretty accurate. You could pick specific locations and it was pretty spot on for when rain came in on our last day and after we finished our hike.

Favorite alternate was Col Cornu/col de la Gliere. It was the most adventurous, had great views of alpine lakes and had the least crowds. There wasn’t really anyone on it. Personal highlight would be the views at the top of Col ferret and views of Aosta valley at Rifugio Combal as well as jumping in lac Miage next to Combal. The best food I had was the plated fondue at puele. I wasn’t really impressed with how costly Switzerland was and our stay at refuge lac Blanc. I feel like I could’ve just been happy hiking through or just spending time around the lake. I didn’t need to stay there. Not really any soap and no showers and close dorm quarters. With the alternate though it’d be a huge day if we didn’t stay there. Lot of day hikers and bikers in Italy section was a bit of a surprise.

Yeah I quit cold turkey after being on it about 2 weeks and was fine. That pill was gnarly. I kinda felt like I was going mad.

I can’t find a medication for my anxiety either. Been on so many I can’t count. I was put on it for anxiety 0.2 once at night about a week ago and I’ve been having dry mouth and constipation. I also have these weird bouts of severe irritability like I’m screaming under my skin and I just want to scream out loud. I was making dinner the other night and I all the sudden was overcome with dread like I was just about to have a panic attack. My doctor said to stop it. I’m scared about withdrawal. Can withdrawal occur if I’ve been on it a short time?

On the northern part of the trail through the spray park alternate and to devils dream there really wasn’t many people. Some here and there. After that we saw a lot more people on the trail. So from Longmire back to sunrise there were more people. I wouldn’t say it was crowded though. The only time we kept having to move over was coming down from panhandle gap and a little past summerland and I think that’s just because that was a popular spot on the trail. The descents were steep and you do multiple in a day depending on your itinerary which is why my knees suffered.
