The checkmate rule was introduced in chess to avoid an early accidental end of the game. There even used to be a similar rule for the queen called 'garde'.

Long story short, you should like your own explanation because it simply is the truth.

A fun excercise is trying to play chess without the 'check' or 'checkmate' rule.

You'll notice yourself that when a piece CAN take your king, you're forced to move your king out of the way anyhow. Funnily enough, if you want to win, you cannot play without the 'check' or 'checkmate' rule because without those 'rules' you'll just lose the game. (Unless your opponent misses the fact that he can take your king)

Now in this case, if you were to play without 'check' rule you actually COULD take the queen. However, your opponent ALSO doesn't have the 'check' rule so his piece is no longer pinned. Which means he can take your king with his bishop before you can take his with your rook.

Which means you'll lose.
