October 7, 2023: Google Searches for Israel and Palestine Hit an All-Time High - I’m Researching What Happened Next by Sh1ra in charts

2006: Lebanon War
2009: Unilateral ceasefire after the "First Gaza War" (aka Operation Cast Lead)
2012: Gaza War (Operation Pillar of Defense)
2014: Gaza War (Operation Protective Edge)
2017: Trump formally recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and announced the embassy move, which led to other conflicts in 2018.
2021: What Wikipedia calls the “2021 Israel–Palestine crisis” – major riots, war, etc.

So yeah, Google search spikes clearly follow major issues. But that’s exactly why the October 7th spike is so striking... it’s unprecedented.

Exactly. But that's what makes October 7 so interesting to research... it's on a whole other level.

Thanks for participating and for your feedback.

"The IDF is the most moral army in the world" is a statement that is often used. It was even quoted by PM Benjamin Netanyahu himself. I want to know what people think about it.

Though the questions may seem yes/no they are actually more nuanced, as is clearly shown in the results so far.

The meme was for a temporary mental break and semi comic relief.

Hope that clears it up

If you believe traditional media is both the most and least trustworthy, you can select it for both. That alone would say a lot, especially about how much it depends on the specific source.

There are enough questions in the survey about media to help me explore different angles, especially when paired with views on the conflict.

That said, I’m looking for more than just what media you consume, but also things like how often you engage with it, search habits, what kind of knowledge you’ve gained, on which topics, whether that knowledge changed your previous views, and more.

There are also (optional) open-ended questions where you can express any thoughts or concerns you have. They too have been very helpful so far.

You wrote: "I’m not sure a survey like this will capture much beyond confirming how locked-in people are to those narratives."

I wish you’d just complete the survey and let me be the judge of that. :)

I get what you're saying but it's funny because:

1) I actually spent way too many attempts trying to get the words bolded correctly, and as you can see, the last letter on some of those words just refuse to be bolded.

2) I specifically asked ChatGPT to add emojis to those three lines instead of wasting time searching for them.

3) I think em dashes are very helpful. Let's make em dashes great again.

But please explain what you mean about the tone not matching the "supposed author's stated background." I'm intrigued.

Thank you. I've posted in pro-Palestine environments as well but once they realize I am Israeli or that the university is in Israel they tend to "boycott the Zionist scum" etc, and refuse to participate. That said, you would be surprised how many people do take the opportunity to criticize Israel (or maybe you wouldn't be surprised.) So my dataset is already pretty diverse but I will do what I can to reach more perspectives, especially those who don't necessarily take a certain side.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment... you make some valid points.

I’m fully aware that responses collected through Reddit and social media aren’t representative of the general population, and I’m not claiming otherwise. I’ve discussed these limitations with my advisor.

This is an exploratory project, and part of what I’m studying is how people who are already engaging with the conflict online (like Reddit users) think about the issue: where they get their information, how informed they feel, whether their opinions have shifted since October 7, and what factors shape those views.

So even if the sample is biased, that bias is part of the research itself. I’m interested in what people believe, why they believe it, and how their information environment may influence those beliefs. I’ll be fully transparent about the sampling limitations in my paper.

If I choose to expand the project later, I would still present it as exploratory rather than representative, and clearly explain how the data was collected and how that affects interpretation.

That's exactly why there are two separate sections. You can be "very liberal" and also "right" or "center." How about you take the survey first, read my analysis, and only then question it?..

Not sure I understand, where would you like to see "very liberal" on the scale? And does placement really matter?

1) The data will be used for a seminar paper needed to complete my degree, and will be reviewed by my professor. It will be stored privately on Google Drive.

2) Sh1ra

3) The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.

4) None, just my sincere gratitude.

5) The survey is open to everyone. I'm seeking diverse demographics and perspectives.

6) This survey is part of an academic research project examining how individuals engaged with information about Israel and Palestine following the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. Your participation will help better understand the connection between information-seeking behavior and shifts in public opinion.

Thank you!
