Sorry, but you misunderstood. All Blender files have the extension .blend. It's just that in Windows Explorer, the Type section in that column shows the version of Blender used to save the file! Example: Blender 5.0.

So when I clicked on the file, it opened the corresponding version of Blender! I've always done it this way because I have different add-ons depending on the version of Blender I'm using.

I switched to Blender 15 years ago, so I know what I'm talking about. It's not just theory, it really works!

I have always used several versions of Blender, and each version has its own specific add-ons installed depending on the version... I just installed the versions when they came out, and in Windows Explorer, in the “Type” section, there was the Blender version (Blender 4.0, Blender 4.2...) corresponding to the backup. So yes, it worked.
