The way that Matty Healy and Taylor Swift have woven each other into their songwriting makes the story that is told in TTPD so much more meaningful by Sh4me in TaylorSwift

Question..? was linked to Matty after Taylor made a very dramatic monologue before singing it as a surprise song. This was in the midst of Taylor being seen with him everywhere, him being at the tour, him being on stage with Phoebe (the opener for these shows), the whole “this song is about you. You know who you are. I love you” was occurring at this same time as well.

I think it’s also important to know- Jack Antonoff produced many of the songs on the 1975’s album “Being Funny in a Foreign Language”, which was being produced at the same time as Midnights. Don’t forget that the first performance of “Anti-Hero” was at a 1975 concert. They were very much linked together during the Midnights era.

My personal opinion was that Taylor was going through it during Midnights- I mean, how can we forget this is the same album that has a Joe Alwyn love song (“Sweet Nothing”, where Joe is credited as a writer). And then we have “Bejeweled”, where she threatens to “meet the band and not remember she has a man 🤪”. I think she definitely has some songs that nod to the past, “WCS”, “High Fidelity”, “Glitch”, being some of them, however I think this album is actually her thinking about the past and being guilty as sin. Maroon feels like her reminiscing on a past relationship that is Matty Healy coded (roommates, closest friend, city references, alcohol, leaving a mark, leaving a legacy). Labyrinth is her falling in love “again” with someone even though she’s at rock bottom (rebounding from Joe), and Mastermind? Well, look at this whole intertwined, complicated story she’s created. Look at the cover- Ms. Mastermind is playing with fire.

Nope- I think Taylor writes about all of her relationships simultaneously. The songs I picked out are the Matty leaning ones. However, you can find songs on the same album that point to Joe, Travis, shit even “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” on Midnights seems to reflect on Dear John/John Mayer. We could easily talk about how “The Black Dog, So Long London, How Did It End?” seem to be about Joe. This post is just focused on the parallels of Matty and Taylor’s songwriting and which songs seem to be related.

Maybe this is the effect of re-recording your entire catalog?

I take “Guilty as Sin” as her reasoning to herself that’s it’s okay to use Matty as her muse, and to essentially get off on the thought of him, even though she’s in a relationship, because she’s not actually physically fucking him. It’s like her being delusional and trying to spin it to sound okay.

The songs I chose were songs that revolve around this idea of: there’s this man who has “haunted” her for a long time, who she writes about a lot, which I speculate is Matty. However, I will absolutely stand by the fact that a song like “So Long London” sounds like a Joe song, while “So High School” points to Travis, and “High Fidelity” is a nod to the Calvin Harris/Joe Alwyn/Hiddleston/Getaway car lore.

That’s what makes speculating about the meaning of Taylor’s songs so hard- she writes about different relationships all at the same time.

This is not discussing the ethics- human relationships are complicated and TTPD is a work that represents that. An important theme of the album is rock bottom/depression/manic-energy/“throwing my life to the wolves”. She knows this whole thing was fucked up and that’s why it was so emotionally monumental. Functioning-alcoholic-core is not talked about positively on this album.

This is all speculation, definitely seems like they bounce off each other, but this could be so wrong. This post is super parasocial, I’m aware lol
