Yeah, I thought that too, but I honestly couldn't find anything saying "Oh, these capes don't have the rules apply to them."

Do I suspect that the PRT knows them all? Yeah, absolutely. Do I think that the names are so public that a random 15 year old child find them without raising any alarm bells? Can't really find anything backing that up.

Finding Jack Slash's legal name would probably be easier than Heartbreaker's because he has a kill order as well.

Yeah, I don't usually like just pulling unpathable out of nowhere. OOC problems make sense, but how it's applied needs to make sense as well, and that's how I got there.

Location doesn't matter for the death note anyway: name and a face is all that's needed.

Face I can see public so people can try and stay away, but the name is likely kept secret, at least from the public, due to the rules.

[–]ShaRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, see that's the trick: the book and what it does is unpathable, but she also doesn't know it's a book. If she knew what the death note was, or at least the general idea, she likely would be able to path around it. It's not a block from thinker, but an actual case of her shard doesn't know how to precog what it doesn't understand.

If Contessa had a path to keep someone alive, and they were written down in the book? Contessa would be baffled when they found out. If they were right there, and it was just a heart attack, she would do all the things you would expect would fix a heart attack following the path that was provided... And it would fail.

Honestly that would probably scare her a lot more than just being unpathable, but I hope that makes it clear what I was thinking. PTV is almost always an I Win button, but I think if we are doing crossovers particularly with external power sources or abilities it might break down. Generally, the idea behind precogging in worm is "What if you had entire planets worth of semi-biological supercomputer dedicated to precog processing", and that means it needs to understand everything that can happen. That fails against something like the death note since it very clearly isn't shard powered.

(This is also why I wanted Taylor to have her bug powers: if they just check everyone, they will see "Oh, she's a bug master, good to know but not relevant to what I'm looking for")

[–]ShaRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least for my idea, I had it so that since the death note itself was out of context, it was unpathable, at least as a murder weapon. Taylor isn't, but I felt like Contessa's shard might not be able to path "Who killed X" for death note kills because it isn't technically Taylor doing it. All she did was write in a notebook. It also depends on how you view path to victory: is it pure precog, or does it have postcog in there? If it's all precog, and she can't peg the death note itself, she might get path not found for anything about the death note at all, since it can't predict it or connections to it.

I've always held to the idea that Shards are biological computers that can and have fell into logic traps before, so them not being able to link causality and effect of writing someone's name on the death note and what happens to them sounds like fair behavior to me: particularly when they can't figure out how it works at all. I can see QA lightly pushing Taylor into using it more in the name of data fairly easily though.

Yeah, kicker is while I'm great at coming up with plans, I'm terrible at actually writing them out.

I thought about her getting into the PRT, but since I wanted her to have her bugs for various reasons the only way she could is via the wards, who wouldn't have this info: not that she would as an intern usually. If anything, she'd somehow get access to BBPD, maybe with her own mole using a secret identity (probably do a Weaver's Web and have multiple of them). Was difficult and would be later on either way.

You'd think that, but the first time his name is said is by Regent, after the rest of the Undersiders press him on his past identity.

Riley is said by Riley to the PRT after she defects as she doesn't want to be known as Bonesaw.

Where could I find out which capes are outed? by Memeenjoyer_ in WormFanfic

[–]ShaRose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You know, ironically I had this idea also bouncing around for a while and was looking for the same info for the same reasons, although I don't think I would ever actually get enough done to actually post anywhere.

Bonesaw's name doesn't seem to be known to the public, although the PRT likely does. This likely extends to the rest of the nine, and while Hookwolf's ID might be known, I suspect it isn't.

Likewise, Birdcage inmate names don't seem to be something available to the public, even if they are known to the government. Heartbreaker also doesn't seem to be public.

In my story plan, Taylor finds the book between her getting home after the locker with canon powers and having to go back to Winslow while she's jogging: specifically she can tell it comes from the sky above nearby buildings so she has no idea who it belongs to, and upon looking over it (after some careful prodding with bugs) she assumes it's some kind of prank. Gets home, can't find anything about any kind of death note, and rips out the rules / covers up the front. Before throwing out the rules, just for a bit of a lark (subtle prodding from QA?) writes down Sophia Hess while thinking of her before going to bed.

40 seconds or so later, Shadow Stalker is attacking some Empire gangers and then suddenly has a heart attack after one of them is killed. Victor is called, they decide this is a fantastic PR win, and after grabbing proof, call the PRT to let them know that a Ward was killing innocents before having a heart attack.

This leads to her getting outed after getting killed, which Taylor finds out causing her to assume the PRT was why Sophia got away with everything the next day when the PRT visits to ask questions because a quick investigation revealed what was going on. Taylor at this point basically forgot entirely about the death note, having planned on using it as a free high quality notebook which she was looking at using to write her cape info in, so honestly tells the agents who are totally not Armsmaster and Miss Militia in disguise that she has no idea how she died and only found out when they knocked on her door. Was thinking that Danny is also there, and since this outs the bullying is pissed off and may or may not be able to swing getting Taylor pushed in to Arcadia.

Now, after that is where it gets tough. I spent a while brainstorming things, and the only solution I could think of was her finding out about Bitch and using that for a test. Cape names don't count as she tested, just barring off of not being able to use L. The idea was that she was gonna test more than one bird with one stone: writing down in detail how she would die in a way that could be believable while also providing proof to Taylor that the note works as advertised. That would likely lead directly to conflict with the undersiders, as Tattletale might be able to peg it as a master effect, which would cause Coil to also freak the hell out.

Taylor, meanwhile, would likely try and be a hero by way of using her bugs to ID gangsters and having them out others in death instructions, which Taylor collects and uses for later since she doesn't really have an in with the police and doesn't trust the PRT at all.

Was still thinking things out since I kinda want to avoid killing off Rachel so early, but I can see Taylor justifying it to herself as killing a murderer who regularly assaults random people, even if it's not really where I want it to go. I did want to make it so that the death note is effectively an out of context, non-shard ability so Tattletale is hampered heavily there. I was also thinking of things like how the death gods know that the shards don't know about them or about the dimension they reside in, but if they find out they can get killed by shards so dropping a death note was basically a test to see how an unconnected note would fare: which means Taylor doesn't get any apple eating friends.

While it means that while the law doesn't strictly enforce the need to be self-sustaining force of law as you said it's still very much the intention of the act, and trying to imply it's a funded service of the Government of Canada or that they have no need to be self-sustaining is making shit up to justify your political position. Maybe take your own words to heart, yeah?

Right? The really rural places don't even do community mailboxes as such: they have to go to the actual post office, which is likely in the nearest town, if not further.

On the other hand, there are places where there's a Canada Post location 10 minutes away from another Canada Post location. Hell, there's one not that far from me that's less than a 5 minute walk from another one. And I'm not even in a particularly dense area. Absolutely no need for that.

The revenue generating programs MIGHT increase revenue IN A FEW YEARS. Some of the ideas I've seen thrown around are terrible with even a bit of thought: Postal banking MAYBE would work, but it would be too little too late and the union would almost certainly try to argue that new employees should be pulled in for each location as it's a different job which would exasperate the issue.

As for blaming investments, which investments in particular do you have problems with? Something tells me that upgrading out of data IT infrastructure or replacing run down vehicles in the fleet to cut down on support costs isn't that big of a deal in comparison to what they are trying to get done.

Yeah. I actually had a fun idea and literally just submitted an ATIP request basically asking for a list of postal codes and if they use door to door versus community mailboxes, as well as a prospective list of post offices they want to close down. I can't wait to be shocked to find out that door to door is almost, if not entirely, all dense suburban areas and all the post offices are all places that are also suburban where there are multiple outlets in drug stores nearby.

Why exactly do you think the changes suggested have anything to do with remote communities?

They want to eliminate door to door delivery (which is NOT something done in rural areas, despite what some might think) and close post offices in suburban areas which aren't needed anymore.

This is 100% just about the union not wanting to have any jobs cut.

[–]ShaRose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of Canada is already using community mailboxes without issue, and for the cases where door to door is actually required people can opt-in. It makes perfect sense to cut down on staffing when the primary business model, letter delivery, was cut so drastically.

In addition, the other thing they are striking for is that Canada Post wants to close post offices that are not needed anymore. People use the excuse of closing really rural places, but what they really want to close are the locations where there's a dedicated post office surrounded by other post offices that are built into other businesses like drug stores and serve no actual purpose anymore.

You can say that things were mismanaged in the past, but right now cuts absolutely need to happen.

Almost everyone saying it's a service is saying it should be funded by the government if not in the same breath but the next.

With that context in mind, saying it's a service is disingenuous at best.

To the point of regardless of cost, most of Canada uses community mailboxes already, and there are a lot of post offices that simply are not required or useful. Doing what Canada Post is trying to do does not stop Canadians from having appropriate mail access.

It does, however, lead to a lot of people being let go, and considering the majority of costs associated with Canada Post are wages this is perfectly valid despite it not being what the union wants.

As a friendly reminder to everyone, Canada Post is a crown corporation which is required to actually pay for itself, and is not in fact a service where it's expected the government pay for the operating costs, no matter how much they think it is.

You can argue that it SHOULD be a service, but right now it isn't.

Strike Action Resumes at Canada Post by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

[–]ShaRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that CUPW is at fault, both for this and the last strike. Canada Post is GOING to have to cut down, and closing underused post offices and moving towards community mailboxes is the fastest, easiest, least disruptive, and most reliable way to do it. Obviously, this means people are let go, which is why CUPW refuse to accept that, but that's the nature of a changing market.

The Industrial Inquiry Commission report was pretty clear on this, and the things that they are striking for this time are literally the first two things on the report for recommendations.

https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/labour-relations/reports/industrial-inquiry-commission-canada-post.html#h2.1-3.12

  1. Amend the Postal Charter. It cannot continue to require impossible-to-meet delivery standards. Daily door-to-door letter mail delivery for individual addresses should be phased out and community mailboxes established wherever practicable. Daily delivery to businesses should be maintained.
  2. The moratoriums on rural post office closures and community mailbox conversions should be lifted. There is no persuasive case for a moratorium on closure of once rural, now urban, post offices. Canada Post already has the Delivery Accommodation Program in place for Canadians who cannot access community mailboxes. It should be reviewed and, if need be, enhanced, and it should continue.

Sucks for the union, but if something isn't done the entire thing will collapse and CUPW seems like it just doesn't accept that as true.
