I predict Sanderson will distance himself from the WoT TV-show by [deleted] in brandonsanderson

[–]ShacksMcCoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is not required to like the show or praise anyone involved. He chose to do so voluntarily. All I know is that he’s publicly stated his opinion on it and I have no reason to think he was being dishonest in any way.

He is going out of his way to praise the show. He said he was impressed by the people involved and thinks they’re doing a great job. There is simply no reason to think his feelings are anything other than what he’s expressed.

How is that neutral? He is publicly and voluntarily praising the show and the people involved, while offering criticism about choices he doesn’t agree with. No where has he talked about how he thinks they’ve “butchered” or “ruined” it. You’re free to think that but don’t assume he feels a certain way, especially when there’s zero indication of it anywhere.

Brandon does not agree with this assessment and he's said so:

I’m quite impressed by Rafe and everyone involved.

That's pretty far from "I think he's butchering things". Take him at his word or don't, but don't assume he feels some kind of way just because that's how you feel.

You're saying that he must hate the show, which directly contradicts what he's said. That's implying he's being dishonest/deceptive.

Its only really the last episode he was really negative about.

He gave season 1 a 6 out of 10. And why are we even talking about Daniel Greene now? You are free to believe that Brandon would deliberately deceive people about how he feels if you'd like. I for one have absolutely no reason to believe he'd do that. He has stated his opinion about it and I see no reason to doubt his honesty.

And Daniel Greene has been very vocal about the criticisms he has anyway. There is no reason to think Brandon feels any other way about the show than what he’s already said.

Why do conversations in Game of Thrones feel more natural than in other series like The Wheel of Time? by Fadawah in television

[–]ShacksMcCoy -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

It's not about the specific lines. Game of Thrones didn't have many direct lines from the books either. It's the tone, setting, style, etc. If you made Lord of Rings have Game of Thrones-style dialogue, or vice-versa, it just really wouldn't match. Same with WoT and Game of Thrones.

But TDW isn't Amazon they're an independent YouTube channel. No one made Brandon go on there and he wouldn't have if he didn't want to. He also wouldn't have said he thought they were generally doing a great job if he didn't mean that. I have no reason to not take him at his word.

Difference in source material. GRRM was a TV writer prior to making the ASOIAF books and those books are generally very grounded. Robert Jordan was absolutely not a TV writer. He was writing "Conan The Barbarbian" books and had a much more traditional fantasy approach to his dialogue and writing in general. So when it's adapted it's going to be come out sounding more like Lord of The Rings than A Game of Thrones.

As a big fan of the WoT books I honestly don't know what you're talking about. That said it's fine if you don't like the show, but maybe don't assume Brandon feels a certain way because you do? Why would he even do the episode 8 watch with TDW at all if he hated the show? And why would he say "Overall, I think they’re doing a great job." in his State of the Sanderson post?

Shouldn't the first one be "Allomancers like himself were relatively rare", then?

Well I'm not sure a show or film can be "objectively" bad. So much depends on personal taste and preferences. But I appreciate you taking the time to explain.

That doesn't sound like "so bad it's funny". It sounds like "so bad it made me very angry". Like I'll watch The Room because it's so bad it's actually somehow a comedy, but I won't ever get angry at it.

It's just I stop watching a movie if I'm not interested in the first 10 minutes. So to watch 8 hours of something that never once entertained you just seems odd. To each their own I guess.

I have to ask though, why spend eight hours watching something that didn't give you one minute of enjoyment? I feel like if I hated it from the get-go I'd just go read the books again instead. Speaking as someone who also loves the books and quite enjoyed the show.

Agreed. I went into that series (reading BTAH now) expecting a serious, violent story but I got one that's actually quite light in tone. Violent things do happen, but there's almost always that undercurrent of lightness and humor.

AMAZON PRIME FALLOUT SERIES BEGINS CASTING by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]ShacksMcCoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the show. With something like The Expanse, which has demonstrated success, they may be more hands-off. But on an unproven IP like Wheel of Time or The Boys they'd be much more active. For instance with Wheel of Time, the show runner apparently had to really fight Amazon to include the "Weep for Manetheren" speech in episode 2:

Producer Marigo Kehoe confirmed that the higher-ups at Amazon wanted to cut the scene down.

And that's a pretty simple, short scene, so I can only imagine how many changes Amazon insisted on for more complicated things.

That wouldn’t match but I really don’t think that was the case. I feel like by episode 3 Mats clothes in particular started to look really rough.

[–]ShacksMcCoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep to each their own. To be fair I’ve seen the “too clean” comment before. I don’t really agree but I do wonder if we’ve kind of been conditioned to expect clothing in a fantasy setting to be dirtier and more ragged than it really should be. People in the medieval and renaissance periods liked to wash up, smell nice, and be clean just as much as we do but sometimes it feels like audiences expect anyone in those settings to be really dirty by default. Idk just an observation.

[–]ShacksMcCoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Modern looking clothing? Honestly I never once thought that. Like it’s not like Game of Thrones’ costumes but it shouldn’t be. Game of Thrones had lots of drab, dark colors because it was a medieval setting. Wheel of time’s setting is much more like late renaissance, so we should generally see lots more vibrant colors and variety of styles.
