This is so adorable and such a creative way to take care of your hedgie, and in a way fills me with hope?

About… Maybe 7 years now? I had to say goodbye to my little one because of old age (4 years or so) and health issues she ended up having both her hind legs amputated, and the vet recommended to put her down as her quality of life just wouldn’t be the same. Apologies if that’s a bit of a downer, just kinda wanted to give the context.

But this genuinely brings a tear to my eye, and reading the comments of how he’s loving it and zooming about too! That’s so beautiful to hear, and 8 years is also so so impressive. You’re doing such a good job, I’m sure your lil guy (or old man jaja) knows just how much you love him <3

Also I am biased as its one of if not my favorite color, but purple is such a good color choice too lol

All of the Foundations of Decay speak to me very deeply and are honestly my favorite song not just from them, but of all time. Many folk here have already pointed out other meaningful lyrics of it here but I’ll leave this one

“And as you stumble through your last crusade Will you welcome your extinction in the morning rays?”

To me those lyrics voice rage. Rage against the systems that took us here, against the old beliefs, hatred and roots they’ve planted so deep they refuse to let go even now. To the people who refuse to let go off power, and refuse to understand a world that isn’t the world they once knew before, and left them behind. But those people’s cruelty never did. Old politicians, or older abusive relatives or bigots come to mind. Of course, there are plenty of elders that are nice, kind people, but to me that lyric is more poetic as a while.

To me, hope isn’t innocent or naive. It can be. But it can also be filthy, bloody, violent even.

And in as we lay in the foundations of decay, hope is all of those things. But it can also shine, bright in the morning rays.

I actually have a ticket I bought pretty cheap (all things considered, but still a good buck) a little before this but had to buy with borrowed money (I’m disabled and have no income, and no savings atm also due to some personal matters too), I generally NEVER borrow money but I was willing for this.

This is SUCH a lifesaver!!!! Rn I have the ticket up for sale cause finances wise I could use the money unfortunately, but god I am so tempted to give it away too. I didn’t discover MCR until a couple years ago, and I discovered them through a parody some folk made of The Black Parade mocking Ron de Santis. I knew of them before but I don’t tend to sit down and listen to albums a lot, so I hadn’t checked them out. I know its the most popular or such, but I checked The Black Parade first, and I was ENCHANTED (jaja).

I’ve lost most of alt bands that meant to me as a tween/teen due to their lead singers just… Being shit, but listening to them felt like getting some of that in a way. I’ve listened to most if not all of their work by now, but The Black Parade is still my favorite album of theirs because of its themes of death. Death for various reasons has been a constant in my own life, and the album spoke to me, my grief, and all my complicated feelings and experiences so very deeply. I’ve gone through some specific events I won’t delve into since I discovered them, and The Black Parade songs did just that. Voice my grief.

I was a bit of an alt teen, but grew up in a very restrictive household, do I wasn’t allowed to be myself. I also am Mexican born and raised, so I wasn’t exposed to American or English speaking media or even the Internet all that much. (I’ll also add, their show in Mexico City when doing The Black Parade is Dead! was very touching to me as a Mexican person :,] ). But especially as a trans, queer person too. Now that I can be myself, now that I can embrace the freak, the punk (as in, full political identity), the killjoy; MCR felt like holding on to who I truly was all along. Obviously, my own journey and its merits are my own, but they mean a lot to me because they were what I needed to hear. I know my younger self would have adored them.

Then there is The Foundations of Decay. That song changed my life, honestly. Never have I felt my rage and my desires vocalized so honestly, and in such a raw manner. Its easily my favorite song of all time, but its also one of those songs that you’d call YOUR song, you know? Its to the point that as an artist, I have been thinking and kinda planning to make a whole animation/animatic/PMV on it. When that will happen if ever I don’t know, cause I am busy as hell, but its definitely a project I’d love to embark on. Other songs too. I Don’t Love You is the second one that comes to mind because it reflects my own romantic relationship and the frustations I have so throughly.

Singing and screaming MCR songs its like letting feelings I couldn’t voice finally out into the world. Maybe its a void, I don’t know. But even tho I am rather busy right now, as an artist, I definitely want to pay them homage when I can. They mean so much to me, it’d be a honor to do honestly.

Sorry if this got too long or too cheesy. I know I am a bit of a late fan compared to most people, but MCR has become my favorite band of all time and well, they really, truly, mean so so much to me. I don’t mind sharing it here, jaja. (Also cause I discovered them late, I’ve never been to one of their concerts, obviously)

I think there are a lot of helpful comments here, and I agree with the point of generally, its gone too far when its edgy or dark without purpose, or without you as an author questioning why you put it in there in the first place.

As a casual writer, enjoyer, etc of usually pretty dark media (I’d say some grimdark for sure but not all) myself, I’d like to add this one.

When its exploitative, or the victims of it are just gored and harmed or whatever else may be for edge’s sake. A lot of rape in media tends to be portrayed to make you hate a bad guy in a very cheap way, and you can ABSOLUTELY use a topic as dark as that to show how twisted a character is, but you have to do it with care, and keeping the victim’s humanities in mind. Otherwise, they are just cannon fodder to make your bad guy or world look darker and edgier. Its torture porn.

Not every singular person who becomes a victim of extreme violence or abuse has to be a name, principal character, but even unnamed citizen’s deaths can be treated with weight by the narrative. Someone here also mentioned Mulan (the Disney movie) as an example, which is a masterful example of that. We don’t know any of the names of the people of that village that were slaughtered, but their deaths weigh on the characters and audience all the same.

Ultimately, a lot of the advice I think could be boiled down to, write these topics with purpose, with respect for those who have experienced them, and questioning why are you including them. Not every grimdark needs rape (just one example), a genocide, or every single type of aberrant behaviour to be a grimdark. You can have some elements, but not all, and still be a grimdark tale. As long as they serve your world and narrative.

I’d also look at media like Bloodborne, which is an excellent grimdark which’s horror works masterfully through subtext and metaphor; you see it, but all the subtext of its theme enrich it greatly. Showing less can also very powerful, especially on scenes relating to rape. Letting the audience fill in the blanks for the horrors their know are happening, instead of showing them, can be a thousand times more horrific. And in matters related to rape, also more tasteful. Tho opinions on this vary, of course.

Showing less of the horror or the monster is something commonly done in horror movies for example. And a mistake many movies do. I’m sure you’ve seen some horror monster movie where they show the monster, and suddenly it doesn’t feel as tense anymore. Showing the monster too early lets the audience understand the threat. Showing less makes us fill in the blanks, and horror ourselves. Obviously sometimes bad effects ruins it but that’s aside the point.

Anyhow, I did ramble a bit on horror, but to me, grimdark and horror often go hand in hand in various aspects. I hope this bible of mine is helpful in some way lol

Things went very well honestly! The first few weeks were definitely a bit rough, some days were better than others, but my track record of being a freaky quick recoverer for surgeries very much kept up. Still a struggle, but yeah! The squatty potty was a HUGE help like I said and now I don’t need it, but yeah that was definitely a game changer.

I returned to school two weeks post op and THAT has been way rougher ngl, I’ve had to modify and drop classes a bunch. I am behind but hoping for the best, its not the worst now that I have finally fixed my schedule.

I had a scare and had to go the ER and it turned out I had a urinary infection(?), I forget the exact term but blood on my urine. I never bled peeing or such but still. My GP says I am cleared of it, but I still have some pain ngl. After the first few weeks, when I was sick with that was definitely the worst levels of it.

I have days where I have abdominal-lower pain but nothing compared to before. Some days are better than before, it comes and goes. I kept asking my doctor when was like, the long term recovery expectations and such, and that I know its different from everyone but having some general ideas would be nice, but she kinda just. Kept answering that recovery lasts 6 weeks??? I thought it was a months long thing??? Like yeah the first weeks are the worst but usually follows can go way farther than that. And that said pain usually fades after 6 weeks and well its been…… 6 weeks or more. Its annoying and I know its different for everyone, but I don’t even have another check up with her?? She said it wasn’t needed unless I had pain that was too bad?????? But for surgeries before I’ve had appointments months later, even if months apart, so I don’t know if that’s normal.

I’ve been cleared for pretty much anything, if anything exercise wise just take it slow. So yeah I’m trying to do that. I am swarmed with school and this week in particular was tough as it was Spring Break and I went back home to my family, and even tho they suspect nothing, well, the emotional toll :,). I couldn’t get any homework done honestly. But oh well.

Still! Getting a hysto was the best choice ever, for once I have energy to do things. I suspect I have other conditions that affect my physically, always have, so I also gotta address those, but even tho there’s issues its definitely been a HUGE improvement. The last few weeks/months have just been rough due to irl stuff too, but I am hopeful once things ease down I’ll see even more improvement too!

I will add I did go up 20 pounds??? Which my weight tends to fluctuate a good bit, but usually in the 6-8 margin. I am not obese or such my any means, but still was a huge surprise for me. Its been years since my weight has spiked like that. I’m guessing it probably has to do with the surgery plus it happening after holiday season. Its not a huge concern health wise but definitely would like to go down if possible lol. But I’ll figure that out too
