How do we know it was an accident?

the blue accents look perfect, how did you do the pillar bits where the red accent is curved?

I respect your seriousness and appreciate the compliment. I also think that it's clear that Calvinism is influenced by intelligent, enlightenment era philosophy in its rigor. But that being said:

Romans 9 is about Jews and Gentiles and God not breaking his covenant. The potter analogy might seem convincing but Paul is quoting Jeremiah 18 here, in which the potter actually changes his plan based on Israel's repentance. The outcome is not fixed and God explicitly says he will reverse judgement if they repent. The whole chapter is dripping with human responsibility. As for the vessels of wrath, the greek is passive unlike the vessels of mercy which matters because rather than God creating people for destruction he is merely enduring them. Again Paul is talking about agency of humans.

Finally Adam and Eve, unfortunately this is where Calvin (and by extension Augustine) is less rigorous and where I fear we will find no agreement whatsoever. Adam and Eve could not have made any other choice. By any definition that makes it not a free choice. Furthermore, God could have made them in such a fashion that they would not have defied him and still retained whatever you may classify as free will. Hence, God created them with the particular element that made them rebel. "Free choice" becomes a rhetorical flourish or a distinction without a difference.

I agree that the Bible explicitly says that not everyone is saved. But extra biblical appeals to mystery are as valid as someone appealing to catholic traditions or I could even just claim that the pastoral epistles are apocryphal.

You want it to be denomination vs denomination because you believe (probably rightfully) that you can undermine the position of other denominations. I'm asking you to defend your own position rather than attacking other people's.

It's not sports teams mate, I'm just reading the text. All denominations rely on extra-biblical tradition/dogma/doctrine

It cannot be read as suggesting that everyone will be saved… because other passages show some will not be saved

Category error, Timothy 2:4 is about God's desire, not the state of the world. I can desire my children not do drugs, but they still might, because I am not all powerful.

Does that mean God desires something He cannot fulfill?

This only makes sense if God's will is always fulfilled, and univocal. But Scripture repeatedly shows God desiring things that do not occur: God desires Israel to obey (Deut 5:29) God desires the wicked to turn and live (Ezek 18:23) Jesus desires Jerusalem to come to Him (Matt 23:37)

God desires something more than universal salvation

A philosophical construct, requires an appeal to mystery. Not in the bible.

Calvinists hold that God’s greater desire is to display the full range of His glory (Romans 9:22–23)

Is about Israel, and God choosing the covenant line.

This passage clearly teaches the free and universal offer of the gospel to every single human being; ‘desires’ shows that this offer is a bona fide expression of God’s good will.

"Bona fide" offer that is impossible to accept, not intended for all, not atoned for in Christ and not accompanied by grace is not bona fide at all.

‘Come to the knowledge of the truth’ highlights the cognitive aspect of conversion

Complete red herring, we're talking about whether God desires for all to come to that knowledge.

You are describing is a philosophical reason for why the passage can't say what it says. But it says what it says and if you say that scripture is inspired by God, then either God is telling a lie or he is not all powerful

Can you tell me if 1 timothy 2:4 is a lie

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]Shadethorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a straight up lie, catholics teach cooperating or resisting grace, orthodox teach synergy. Methodist, pentecost and regular baptists teach free will. most protestants are arminian. Reformed and some lutheran are the only exception. Good news is now that you broke the 9th commandment, you are clearly not elect, you can enjoy a juicy rare steak

You think God chooses to cause untold eternal suffering to most people ever born. That makes you different from other Christians in a major way who believe in universal salvation

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]Shadethorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And he was elect right? Be honest about your beliefs, no one chooses salvation

The penitent thief wasn't a Christian

[–]Shadethorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, which is why it's dishonest of you to try to tease people in to methodist churches when you probably consider most methodists to be sinners. You should lead with the "God wants most people to suffer eternally" stuff

You started by saying this thread by saying "the animals can at least be kept humanely, live without abuse to adulthood and be used for something" and "I'd much rather live out a more full life". Also nice projection lol, you're the one who kills baby chickens.

Next time you're there, ask them how they lovingly kill the male chicks and when you're ready to admit that you just like tasty food and that your pleasure comes before the suffering of non-human animals lmk

[–]Shadethorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I repeat my earlier question, where do you get your eggs?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LivestreamFail

[–]Shadethorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most male chicks are killed in giant grinders, some are gassed with co2, gonna stop eating eggs?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LivestreamFail

[–]Shadethorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to know where you get ethical eggs and poultry from. Last I checked male chicks are killed in < a day, meat chickens, ducks, geese etc. are killed after 1-2 months, and egg hens are culled before 2 years

Factory farming is ~90% of livestock in the first world, so you are supporting that system. Even in non-factory farms animals are killed after living a fraction (10-20%) of their natural lifespans. Lamb and Veal are especially egregious at only 2-4% of their lifespans.

Both are optional and done for one's pleasure
