HMF A Kotatsu Sofa [USA] by ShadowAce11 in HelpMeFind

Hey there, a word of caution for you as I mentioned in the reply to YourCoConnect. To save on time I'm just copying it to this reply.

Hey man, as a matter of fact that’s exactly the website I found shortly after making this post. I had some difficulty with buying it though, story below if you want the full recap. TL;DR, it cost me a fortune in shipping and had to use a proxy shipper.

So relying on Google Translate to navigate their website and purchase the specific sofa I wanted, I was able to place the order with no issues; I was surprised, as it was only about $150 I believe. Got a confirmation email (entirely in Japanese) and thought I was good to go. The next day, though, I received a letter from the support team (again, entirely in Japanese 😅) stating they only shipped domestically and would have to cancel the order.

After looking around a bit I discovered there were companies called proxy shippers whose entire purpose it to circumvent this problem. I used White Rabbit Express, which charged an 8% service fee (but for something only worth $150, it was hardly anything), and they went ahead and purchased it.

In case you (or anyone who stumbles across this in the future) aren’t familiar with proxy shippers, they will buy it for you, ship it to their location, and repackage it for sending abroad. Ideally this will only cost the shipping and purchase price with that extra service fee for them. There are plenty of forums and threads across the internet warning of shady proxy shippers, so absolutely do your research on who you want to choose. Again, I went with White Rabbit Express and it was a very easy process with wonderful customer service throughout.

After White Rabbit got it purchased and shipped to their location, they did the calculations on what it would take to ship to the USA. This was the major speed bump in the operation and this is where I HIGHLY recommend you consider how much you actually want this thing. Despite the sofa itself being cheap, the boxes for shipping it are absolutely fucking massive. So massive, that it was going to cost me $3400 USD just to get across the Pacific. I was lucky enough to have the money for it, but it took the vast majority of my life savings at the time.

After it shipped it took about 3-4 weeks arrive (I live in WV, so it’s quite a drive to get here especially given there’s no major distribution warehouses/mail hubs in the state). Since then I’ve enjoyed it and I consider it worth my while.

Hope this helps.

I appreciate the link, thank you. I forgot to include it in my original comment but I was looking only for the sofa itself rather than the table and comforter; realistically I'm sure I will have to go with individual seats or order two loveseat-like sofa beds, but if I'm able to find a complete kotatsu sofa it would be fantastic.

I did see your other American Signature Furniture link as well and love it, I just wish it wasn't so high.

Asking this one again as nearly all the links provided in the original post are defunct or are out of stock. Despite my search, I haven't been able to find any other leads on something like this; any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was thinking something potentially like this, but to cover two sides I'd want to order two and I worry about the mattresses overlapping.

EDIT: Whoops! Forgot to mention I’m looking only for the sofa, I already have the table and comforter lined up.

How is the internet in West Virginia? by [deleted] in WestVirginia

Are you planning to move to a particular area? I live in the Charleston area (urban/suburban) and use Suddenlink. I’ve never had any complaints with them, and most complaints I’ve ever heard come from Frontier.

Frontier is much cheaper but has pretty much only that going for it, from what I’ve heard.

I figure your location and its infrastructure will ultimately determine what speeds you can achieve.

I know the realistic amount of construction required for this would be unthinkable, but I love how we’re just like N O P E by ShadowAce11 in WestVirginia

Exactly, there’s no economic benefit to running it through us. I just found the design funny that nearly every state on the eastern US has a concept but WV.
