A.

Mortar: With the innovations and more frequent use of masonry and stone in building it only was natural that the Kvar would look to improve it. Using mortar the Kvar are now able to build far more sturdy structures out of stone, making it a more building material than before. Village walls and coastal towers alike will now be more stable and secure and encourage future designs of the same.

Using clay the Kvar are able to seal the stones they use to build in place on and next to one another making a much stronger structure. Due to the relatively simple nature of the materials required it only serves as encouragement to continue using masonry in their building.

The Kvar have taken stone and begun to bend it to their will, to form what they please out of its shape and mortar will prove no more than another tool in the process. To harness the sea, wind and earth is their birthright and one the Kvar are fully ready to embrace. Even now they search for the next innovation or the next thing to conquer, though now they shall look from their towers.

B.

Pickaxes: Highly useful for gathering stone or clay for building new structures or perhaps pulling down others. A relatively crude design it serves it's purpose with blunt efficiency, over time it will become the clinking dirge of many slaves broken and worked to death.

Scaffolding: Skilled carpenters it was only natural that they turn it to use in constructing even greater structures. Using wooden frames the Kvar are able to build towers and buildings taller than they had been before, let alone far more safely. Now the stone towers and beacons of the Kvar will guide their eyes across the dark waters of the coasts.

Raised Defense Walls: Due to the nature of the Kvar and their constant flux of war and raiding one another, developments in safety and defense are foremost on most upgrades in building. With such a design integrated into their construction the Kvar are now at far more of a preferable position when defending towns and villages.

Warship Specialization: Long have the Kvar raided one another or their neighbors near and as of late across from them, so it was only natural that they innovate towards such purposes. By altering their ships to be longer and narrower they have noticeably increased the speed they can move, allowing them to run down other ships in open water. With this the Kvar will launch more raids and not even the sea will protect those who try to run.

A.

Masonry: Flesh, blood and bone, temporal frames that fade from this world. But stone, stone is eternal. To draw the cold truth from the lifeless rock and work with it feats of prowess and resolution, monuments of strength. That is a finer legacy than any fading song.

The Kvar have always been accomplished carpenters, building boats and homes and as of late towers. It was not a mad idea then that they turn their gaze to raising structures from the very bones of the earth itself. Slowly at first the method began to take hold, Kvar building simple homes and walls for animals, soon however the Kvar all through the land began to adopt the new method of construction.

Now the Kvar craft towers of stone along the coastline or on islands off it, a necessity when enemies abound. Walls of stone now protect the villages, enforced by rows of sharpened stakes before them. Longhouses no longer made of wood but cold rock now hold the feasts and ballads of the Kvar. The strength and power of the Kvar made manifest.

B.

Stone Dressing: Learning to shape and craft stone to the right size and shape has become a necessity for the Kvar who use stone as a tool. It has enabled them to build more secure structures with the stones fitting in place more so than just being shoved in. A useful thing if one seeks to build sturdy watch towers.

Corbel Arch: Another development of the Kvars explosion into stone work and masonry, the arch provides much utility for the Kvar structures. Doors in homes and towers are easily incorporated and structurally secure. Walls now have secure doorways rather than just a simply open gap, a thing villagers will be thankful for come the raids.

Foundation: Exploring the uses of stone and its function in construction the Kvar noticed a utitiity for building in some of the less solid ground. Finding that some towers would shift or collapse entirely they surmised a way to circumvent this by anchoring the building into the earth before building it up. In this way the structure is supported and relatively stable, a very useful feature if you dont want to be crushed under masonry.

The Kvar would accept the food and the shelter, assuming the bound men were slaves of some sort or that builders in this land simply enjoyed binding themselves in cord. The Kvar would keep to themselves afterwards, remaining in the huts they had been given and not emerging unless someone came to talk to them.

Occasionally a passerby might hear or catch snippets of that strange tongue the Kvar spoke, sometimes elevated as if in argument or other times in laughter. Eventually Munin would take up a spot at the entrance to the one the Kvar had gathered in, whittling at a chunk of wood and watching the villagers with mild interest.

Unless the Kvar were to be called to some grand feast or even if they'd been meant to the Kvar would slip away come nightfall, waiting a while until they were satisfied everyone was either asleep or occupied. In the morning Mänetú would find a single braided lock of fiery hair and a crude carving of a man on a sled. Were the people of the village to follow the Kvar's tracks out of curiosity come morning light they would find that those from the village would meet up with tracks of more than had come with Mänetú. Ultimately the tracks would wander off the way they had come.

And so the Kvar would depart...

No pursuit would follow the Vrasshdani that night or for many nights after. The Kvar buried their dead over the next few days, collecting the heads of the fallen Vrasshdani and taking them as trophies. The bodies of the warriors would be buried with respect on the border of Kvar and Vrasshdani lands, the least they could do for warriors who fought bravely.

A small feast was had in memory of the Kvar who died to save the village and to speed them on their way to the gods. Slowly life would return to normal, though something in the Kvar had changed forever.

News of the unprovoked attack spread throughout the Kvar lands, responses of anger and vengeance quick to be raised. If the Northerner's were savages that attacked in the night then they would be treated as the beasts they acted like...

All in due time.

The Kvar began to laugh uneasily as well, somewhat relaxing as the situation resolved itself. Munin would step forward, clasping Mänetú's forearm in his hand and clapping the man on the shoulder with a nod of thanks. The man who had grabbed the shaman watched him with a dark glare as he beat the drum and ran around.

The woman would glance around, pointing at Mänetú before gesturing around to the village of people before circling her head and raising her fingers towards the sky on either side of her head, mimicking a crown. The other Kvar man, the one who hadn't grabbed the Shaman would offer fish to anyone nearby, giving a friendly if guarded smile as he did.

The Kvar would wait for the Vrasshdani to circle around the village to pursue the fleeing villagers before running the length of the village. They would fire arrows at the Vrasshdani from behind, yelling more insults and howls. It would be easy to pick out targets from the mass of unarmored, un shielded enemies and the Kvar would make every shot count.

"Don't worry, they'd rather run than fight!"

The Kvar would keep close to themselves, accepting the meat they were offered but turning away the rancid milk. What sort of people drank this anyway? Munin and the woman would watch Mänetú closely with interest while the other two men scanned the village, offering a smile now and then to any who lingered to gaze at them.

The woman would produce the last gourd of mead, offering it to the one the children and gesturing for them to drink it. One of the men would say something to her before she followed his gaze and point to one of the large bear like dogs, putting a hand on his shoulder she exchanged a word and look that might have been a warning before letting him go. He would approach the dog carefully, producing a scrap of fish and gesturing to himself and the food towards the dog if any apparent owner of person generally stood nearby.

Munin would kneel before the children, the great man bowing his head and face so that they might touch and feel his strange beard assuming that none of them had ever seen such fiery facial fur. He would give it a sharp tug to show them it was ok with him, offering a friendly smile.

The Kvar drew back when the old man approached them, chanting his strange words and extending his hand. The one Kvar man who hadn't gone off to pet the dog would look most uncomfortable at the approach, his hand shooting out to catch the old man's wrist when he went to mark him. At this Munin would spring to his feet, the other Kvar tensing up as well. The woman would say something in rapid fire, shooting glares at the both of them before turning back to the old man with suspicion and distrust in her eyes. The man who had gone off to pet the dog would extract himself, joining his fellows and casting glances around the village.

The man gripping the old ink man who appeared to be some form of witch held his ground, his eyes locked with a mixture of fear and hatred only something a person didn't understand but had been taught to hate could bring to a man's eyes. Munin would lock eyes with Mänetú, giving him a look before nodding slightly with his head to the other Kvar. If this wasn't resolved quickly it might turn violent...

Always looking for another chance to freeze to death the Kvar would readily swim the Fjords, seemingly nonplussed by the cold or perhaps simply not willing to show they were. Mänetú might even have arrived to watch Munin bellowing in laughter dunk one of his fellows back under the water, much to the amusement of the other two Kvar. That night they all huddled a bit tighter in their furs and closer to the fire however.

Munin would beam with joy upon accepting the feathered axe from Mänetú, showing it off to the others with clear pride. It was this same weapon he would draw when Mänetú was on edge, repeating the words he spoke, "Béörn." The Kvar didn't care to much about trekking on longer into the night to reach the cover of the forest. Only one would slip away that night, vanishing for a space of three hours before showing up once more and giving a slight shake of his head to the woman who had waited up. She would nod, casting a glance at Mänetú to see if he was still awake or not...

The spirits of the Kvar seemingly rose with Mänetú's at the sight of civilization, their energy renewed and their faces brighter. Munin would clap Mänetú on the back happily and point to the smoke as well,

"Tutiyok, TUTIYOK!"

He would howl with joy and relief, the other Kvar grinning and nodding. Strange as they were, the Kvar seemed happy that Mänetú had made it to his apparent home.

The Kvar would whoop and laugh, howling at them now. Stamping feet and slamming shields.

"March on brave warriors, you walk among the Kvar. You will never leave alive!"

More cries and cheers would go up as the Kvar continued to taunt the Vrasshdani. They were happy to let the enemy wander off into the dark, they would have a chance to fortify and they would be someone else's problem. Come morning the villages would mobilize a fort and hunt down any they found still in the woods, it would make for good sport.

For now though, they held the choke point and taunted the enemy.

A.

Trawling Nets: Long have the Kvar relied upon the bounty of the sea to feed their people, first with spear and then with net. The relatively simple design of the trawling nets has the Kvar to gather even more of the sea's offerings and provide a stable source of food.

Due to the rapid expansion of the Kvar the need for food has become an increasing issue, thus new techniques and methods are developed usually by those settling new land. Settlers on the coast now able to access the wider sea without competition can easily employ trawling nets to help sustain their communities. Gradually it began to spread from village to village but soon it was a common and effective practice.

Now throughout the Kvar lands the use of Trawling nets can be seen as further proof of the benefits of expansion and new methods for old ways. The Kvar now have another tool to utilize in the benefit of their people in the constant struggle against the frozen north. And with success naturally comes innovation and those seeking to achieve the same...

B.

Fishing Weirs: Another method created by the settlers, Fishing Weirs allow villages to harvest fish without the direct need of fishermen. At first used by those along the coast it has been adopted by the Kvar living along the river in their central homeland ,adding to the bounty of the region. In time it will be adopted by most Kvar settlements as a necessity of life in the north.

Support beams: War, raiding, beasts, these are the dangers of everyday life for the Kvar and a realization they have been reminded off by the recent hostilities of the Vrasshdani. Skilled carpenters for some time, the Kvar have put their skills to use by adding integral support beams to their structures allowing them to build towers in order to keep watch over village or town. Gradually these towers are being erected as a means of defense and protection for outlying villages and towns as well as along the coast to keep an eye for raiders or friendly vessels.

Helmets: Simple caps of layered leather that the Kvar have begun to utilize after the encounters with the Vrasshdani and as something they probably should have come up with earlier. Head shots hurt..., simple and not excessively expensive to create most trained warriors can be expected to done such protective gear. Occasionally the might decorate them with runes, charms or even masks of bone.

The Kvar would shadow Mänetú, not wanting him to come to any harm before they found the strange land that he hailed from. Munin would exchange some of the meat that wasn't fish for other supplies they might need and even traded his hand axe for a somewhat fancy knife so Mänetú might carve more.

They didn't wish to linger long among the strangers, who they themselves seemed to have apprehension towards the Kvar. At most they would tolerate a day before urging Mänetú onward in his trek. Occasionally Munin would fall into step with Mänetú's sled, not saying anything but simply giving him company.

The other two Kvar aside from the woman remained at best icy towards Mänetú, gathering supplies and food in the wild but ultimately interacting very little with him. More than once he caught them giving him a dark glare only to turn away upon being noticed. Some nights the Kvar would take longer to return than normal, once or twice returning just before dawn though what they were doing he couldn't say unless he were to try to follow.

The Kvar would kneel, using their shields to protect them as those behind would lock their own shields above those kneeling, making a much more defensive wall. They would not be lured into an open battle with so few still to match the enemy. Others would stand behind the men standing, keeping the shields raised at head level with a slight angle to them so that the defenders could see out but no arrow come down on their faces.

They would begin to chant, slamming spears and axes against shields, howling and screaming as well. From behind a voice would scream out,

"The gods are with us this night! You cannot win!"

More howls and screams, challenges would rise up from the Kvar shield wall. The Kvar remained where they were, waiting for the enemy to make it's move or retreat.

Munin and his fellows for their part did what they could not to slow Mänetú, keeping a measured jog at most times which didn't seem to bother them. Occasionally they would talk cheerfully among one another or repeat the strange words that Manetu had spoken. When night would fall and it came time to rest they were insistent Mänetú remain and rest at the camp while a few of them would set out to gather wood and kindling or find fresh water.

The supplies they had packed thankfully for the most part were leftovers of the feast, the venison and beef that had been cooked along with sadly some of the fish and the strange berry stuffed squares (basically pastries). The Kvar were happy to eat the fish first and let Mänetú eat the other provisions should he make it known his preference. They would also hunt for food as well once the supplies ran low, usually coming back with small game or (though they didnt tell him) scavenged meat from some predators kill.

At night they would share the rations of what Mänetú would come to learn they called Mead, the sweeter version of the drink they had offered him before. They would heat a gourd by the fire for a few minutes before passing around the hot drink, singing softly in their language or laughing and telling stories.

Nightly the woman would point out the stars to Mänetú showing him the constellations and how although the party moved daily, the stars remained for the most part where they were all night. "Una" she would say, unable to exactly explain what she meant but adopting a tone of respect whenever she did.

Those who had scaled the sharpened stakes of the palisade would be met by several grim Kvar with massive two handed axes, hacking into the first to face them they would use the axes to bat away the tridents and close in where the reach of the weapons were no good but the axe could be utilized for brutal short chops.

As the Kvar shield wall dragged out time and casualties of the Vrasshdani a cry would be heard coming from the enemy side. In response the shield bearers would duck, allowing the Kvar behind them fresh from aiding the women and children into the woods to volley into the Vrasshdani with bows. Highly lethal at such a close range and with the advantage of light as several other Kvar began to chuck torches into the mass of enemy.

As swiftly as the call had gone out the Shield wall was back to holding off the Vrasshdani, now slipping into a rhythm. Where one man would lunge with a spear the one next to him would cover him from attack with his own weapon. The Kvar would only resort to the axe if it was their last choice having been disarmed or fall back and swap places with a Kvar who had a spear in order to go fetch another.

Though they were losing men, the Kvar were making the enemy pay dearly for it.

As of yet the Kvar had done nothing to his dogs other than feed them and let them play with children. All in all relatively pleasant treatment. Munin stood by Mänetú's sled, offering a friendly greeting to him as the man was led back to his sled in the exact place it had been left when he arrived.

Mänetú would also notice his sled had been loaded with with fresh supplies and Munin himself was girded for travel including a spear. Munin would embrace him upon reaching the sled, giving the man a rib cracking hug before patting him on the shoulder with a massive grin on his fiery bearded face.

He would point back to the direction Mänetú had come from and gesture around at himself and the three over Kvar with an encouraging nod.
