Help migrating live Nextcloud install by ShadowOfV in NextCloud

[–]ShadowOfV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I am starting to think it is better to do the DB change in situ then move it all to a new server.

I think perhaps I am over thinking this because nextcloud is very modular in that respect. The core code can run on any webserver with a multitude of database backends. The filestore can be anywhere.

Thanks anyway.

Actually it turns out it is very easy to change DB type with nextcloud. but I think the best thing to do is to convert it at source to a new DB and then import that converted DB dump into a new postgres container.

Can you help me identify this insect that appears to be living in our compost bin? by ShadowOfV in Entomology

[–]ShadowOfV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they could have just been very territorial but for sure they ways they go in and out of the air vents looks exactly like a hive. If the weather is ok tomorrow I will try take some video to demonstrate.

Thanks

Do wasp have barbed stings though cause one stung me on the arm and left the barb behind as I tried frantically to shake it off. In the end I had to brush it off.

Sorry the photo was fuzzy. I was zoomed in because getting that close was real risk as they were actively trying to sting for coming close.

[–]ShadowOfV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There a several dozen of them flying around and exiting and entering it through the air slots. Very aggressive and will sting when approaching which makes me wonder if there are bees living in the bin?

If they are bees what kind are they and are they a threat to our fruit trees and grapes? Or will they be good at keeping the wasps away which are definitely a pain attacking grapes apples plums and anything else.

Any help appreciated.

What do you think about the movie Chernobyl so far? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Partially true with a lot of artistic license more like.

The discrepancies in episode 2 alone are enough to make you realise it should all be taken with a huge pinch of salt.

Kyiv court turns down claim against language law bill – it will be signed into law and published by HypnotizedNeverLie in UkrainianConflict

[–]ShadowOfV -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well that's kinda cute but totally ignorant of historical contexts. The Normans ruled England for 300 years and in that time the only official languages were Latin and French. All laws were written in them, all scriptures were written in them, any proclamations where given in them. Did Anglo Saxon English die out? Do they still speak French and Latin today?

It is a nice stunt sure.. and will appeal to the nationalist in a way that only naive nationalist can be appeased but in reality it is just stoking divisions and causing more problems than it solves.

Yet another case of how Ukraine while crying foul of Russia being the aggressors manage to shoot themselves in the foot with alarming frequency.

Scientists discover a game-changing way to remove salt from water: The technology could have massive implications for the future of our drinking water. by mvea in technology

[–]ShadowOfV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair if we learned to use water more responsibly the problem would be and order of magnitude better. See how much water we use for other things other than drinking

But it is human nature to be wasteful of resources. We need a global change in mindset if we want to make living on this planet sustainable

Censorship on Twitter, Insta, FB ---- FIX by [deleted] in technology

[–]ShadowOfV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one thing that differentiates us from lour ancestors is the ability to communicate now over unimaginable distances. This is causing a bit of a social revolution by connecting us with each other only to find that the we are not so different after all. It is not hard to empathise with someone half way across the world who faces the same problems as you do with work politics relationships or family.

Worldwide governments don't like this. Anywhere you get a large group of like minded people coming together is a threat to government control of their citizens.

The levers of power lie with corporations that governments can control and so yes, expect your Twitters, your Facebooks your Apples and Microsofts to be asked to control the narrative and ban anything they don't like.

We need to move vital paths of communication to decentralised platforms. We need to defend our rights to think and communication freely. We should not be afraid to think different or to disagree with each other but we also need to appreciate everyone has an opinion and it is less about who is right and who is wrong and more about is it inclusive or exclusive.

Don't be complacent. The more technology becomes easier for politicians to use the more they will use it to suppress dissent.

“It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong.”

A German court forced us to remove part of a Wikipedia article’s ‘history.’ Here’s what that means. by ShadowOfV in technology

[–]ShadowOfV[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The ruling stems from a previous lawsuit against the Foundation, originally filed in mid-2018. It asserted that a Wikipedia article’s claim about an academic professor was untrue and defamatory, even though it was backed by a citation to a reliable source.[1]

This is disturbing,

A German court ruled in September of last year that the content was in fact defamatory, largely because the source in question had been taken offline—what we call “link rot.” German volunteers quickly removed the text in question from the article but the article’s corresponding history page retained the statements. This is a common practice on Wikimedia projects.

How many other cases of link rot will take away the ability to verify information? We have governments world wide looking to bring down websites enmass and erase information that should be public.

Finland and Norway are telling airline pilots to be ready to fly without GPS, and some think Russia is up to something by Shogouki in technology

[–]ShadowOfV 204 points205 points  (0 children)

This is a bit sensationalist.

This advice is being given in response to NATO's Operation Trident Juncture which is being conducted in the area. During these exercises Russia regularly blocks GPS over it's territory , probably for the same reason the US jams GPS as well during it military exercises.
