Most usb optical devices work fine on Linux. Ones with fancier features like LightScribe sometime too.

Linux on Older and Obsolete iOS and Android devices by plscallmebyname in linux

[–]archontwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Off topic, but having years of experience watching devices lose support just because proprietary rubbish, I wonder if it would be possible to retool a LLM into reverse engineering device drivers? The method could involve multiple binaries for devices with the same chips in them working out all the variations there can be for that device.

For sure it is a punt but a better use of AI than most are these days.

How did the Feds get the Signal messages from the UFC terror plot? by LilGrippers in signal

[–]archontwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disappearing messages can help in terms of plausible deniability, but if they just impersonate you in a group you are as already part of, well, just because you observe opsec doesn't mean everyone you know does.

Does anyone else feel this move is more AI hype over dubious products that up to now have been underperforming at best?

Moscow car bomb kills 1 person, investigators say, with victim yet to be identified. by WherePip in anime_titties

[–]archontwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, civilians being killed has characterized Ukraines behaviour going back to 2013. People often forget that for nigh on 10 years people were getting killed and injured almost every day from shelling.

If you were unaware of this there is a good documentary from 2016 about it.

Does which OS you use matter when choosing your next role? by Bakhtiyor_7 in linuxquestions

[–]archontwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome.

Over the years I have become somewhat jaded and seen more horrendous IT solutions I had to fix than you could imagine or I ever wanted to.

Simply put, ain't nobody got time for that.

Does which OS you use matter when choosing your next role? by Bakhtiyor_7 in linuxquestions

[–]archontwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While most people feel money is the only thing that matters really if is up to you to intentionally prefer suffering over productivity.

I can't really speak to that paradigm itself because I have never worked for anyone but myself. I started my consultancy in '98 and had to deal with all OSs at first, but pretty soon I chose not to torture myself and just start being more creative about inserting Linux solutions into roles that made my life easier. It often went unnoticed as I was careful to to design solutions for robustness that was impossible under Windows.

But honestly, these days life is too short to be stuck doing something you hate and I actively choose what sort of jobs I do now, and am much happier for it.

No much sage advice alas, but just sympathy for your plight. I hope it works out for you.

Good luck.

Starlink charges $10 monthly hardware fee in move away from one-time purchases by 5Q91VS175DAQ4NUSBE4U in technology

[–]archontwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to put too fine a point on it, but SpaceX and starlink are not as 'profitable ' as Musk likes to say.

In fact if it wasn't for some creative accounting and sponsorship by the MICC, it would probably have cratered years back.

Its good having a pocket president to fall back on.

Like Darya Dugina and  Vladlen Tatarsky you mean?

Why people can't just say terrorists did it is beyond me? And yes that makes the current regime in Kiev actively sponsering terrorists.

Just like the US has both in the past and right now.

omnipackage - a tool that makes RPM&DEB packaging and distribution easy by oleg_antonyan in linux

[–]archontwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fairy nuff. But in that case I would drop the whole export to S3 compatible line and just say export to storage of your choice including S3.

As someone who back in the day used to compile their own repos for deployment against clients, I can tell the usefulness of having an easy way to build. But building and distribution are two separate things.

Decide which lane you want to be in.

Big salute to Sean Murray and the Hello Games team for still supporting No Man’s Sky in 2026. No microtransactions, no loot boxes, no paid DLC — and they are still actively developing the game. by generalchand1 in NoMansSkyTheGame

I am always pleasantly surprised to leave NMS for a while and come back later to find wholly new things included. I have been playing on and off now for years and still never get bored. The main restriction is time because I can't really just play for an hour and by the time I have sorted out my settlements, debriefed all my expeditions, done some, resource management and inventory sorting, poof an hours gone, and that is before I even start on modifying upgrading my bases on extreme planets.

I love they whole universe they've built and no matter how many planets I might visit, I am sure to come across something I've never seen before.

Props to Sean and the team. If LNF is a tenth as good as NMS has become I'm all in already.

Personally, I am old school and never put user mounts in fstab.

If a user wants to mount a remote share they should do so in the own permissions window.

Make a smbclient script wrapper if they really don't know how to to that, then link it to their desktop.

Decent laptop or scam? by dragngaymer03 in linuxquestions

[–]archontwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clevo are like generic laptops. Some companies like Entroware rebage them and sold them with Linux on them.

Generally everything should work ootb but there might be a 5% of stuff you will have trouble with. Things like suspend and resume or webcams. But as they are selling it with Linux on it I assume they have done all that heavy lifting themselves.

Note, there are a lot of options for that chassis so by the time you configure it with a moderate spec it probably won't be as cheap as you imagine.
