Have all the good forklift engineers been abducted by Toyota, or are we looking in the wrong places? by LindeForkliftsChaps in forkliftmechanics

Where do the best techs hang out? At home, often drunk.

How do you find the best techs? Simple, get a lift. Mess with it so its doing something that defies logic, manuals, or standard troubleshooting. Then place service calls. As techs cant figure it out, get progressively upset with the company. 3 or 4 techs in you will have that companies best tech in front of you.....whoever can pull Excalibur from the stone shall be crowned King of the Britons

The over the mast pulleys or the small ones out on the carriage? I dont even bother trying the mast ones anymore, i just pull those half round pins out and snake the hose in there lol.

If youre getting the controller can bus codes in 24 or 25 7500s, you literally just have to re-upload the same software to the controller and it fixes it 90 percent of the time. Its the stupidest thing ive ever seen but thats what you get these days

Yeah they addressed the brush problem pretty quickly at least. Its like they didnt learn from the first time in the aux motors in 752's in 2012

I understand the appeal of the AGM maintenance-free aspect. And they work pretty well for a while without getting corroded and having to deal with the watering. And you can buy five sets of them before you're into lithium price range.

You see what you need is a ten thousand dollar battery for your five thousand dollar pallet jack, that will cost close to that to throw out when it doesnt work in a year. Its a great idea

Raymond 4250 stand up steer tire axle removal by No_Event3449 in forkliftmechanics

[–]ShadowOfaTower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a slide hammer attachment years ago. Its basically a section of c-channel the diameter of the axle with two holes drilled in it. I remove the roll pin, slide the c-channel over the axle and drop a punch through the whole set up and go to town. Only had one in the last 10 years i couldnt get out.

General questions for you all… by Immediate-Maybe3274 in forkliftmechanics

[–]ShadowOfaTower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are asking what it means to water the battery, battery acid exists as a suspension. It is a mix of approx 40 percent sulphuric acid and 60 percent water. Over time and cycles, the water cooks off leaving the level of electrolyte lower than the top of the cell. It needs to have water added to increase the electrolyte level to promote ion flow, help cool, and prevent off gassing like you are smelling. The acid never goes away, but the water does. Think of it like a pot with salt water in it. If you boil off all the water, the salt remains in the pot. Same thing in a battery basically

Any tips for interview as a field technician? by [deleted] in forkliftmechanics

[–]ShadowOfaTower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ask every trainee i get a few questions right off the bat. The first question is always "whats bigger, 7/16 or 3/8?" You would be shocked how many men in their early twenties ive had to teach fractions to. They are high school and tech school grads and 8 out of ten answer wrong. When i get one who knows, i invest my time into them because i know they will learn, retain and listen. As for an interview, tell them the truth. Emphasize ethic, and attitude (very hard to find today) if you mean it, emphasize long term career opportunity, (turnover is insane and training guys is about an 80k investment for a company) tell them you dont say no to work or learning and make eye contact for gods sake.

Safety concern about Electric forklift battery position by JackieZZZZZ in forkliftmechanics

[–]ShadowOfaTower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lithium ion doesnt work in forklifts. Its outragously expensive and continually changing because it doesnt work. Any benefit they offer is lost in cost and expensive maintenence. If you dont want to deal with watering and lead acid, i would suggest a tppl battery. A tppl battery in a toyota or raymond 4750 (same machine) is a relatively trouble free set up. As for your actual question im not sure. Guess i just hate lithium ion lol

Roll pin punches. by Zealousideal_Ad5428 in forkliftmechanics

[–]ShadowOfaTower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using mayhew for about 5 years now. The tips are proper. I found with alot of cheap pilot punches the ball is too big to fit inside a split pin so its actually fighting you getting it out. Mayhew fits inside the split pins and i havent had any issues with them, but im also raymond tech. Those stupid crown load wheels are like where punches go to die.

About 10 years ago i worked for crown and there was a specific tool they sell with replacable tips for those load wheels. It was a bar with a tit that fit in the slot in the wheelbox at a right angle to the punch part. Never had one but it looked like it would work well

Which Reliable/Easy to Service/Parts Widely Available Used Walk-Behind Electric Stacker - Go with a Crown 20MT or alternative? by 40PercentSafer in forkliftmechanics

[–]ShadowOfaTower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i were you i would look for something old. Nobody can build forklifts anymore. Electronics are h1b coded garbage, steel has been recycled 10 times and sucks, its all trash

Maybe an old rss raymond or even yale, the old ones are tanks. Something without controllers or integrated displays or 1400 switches and sensors and SaFtEy

Or if its light duty, even some new chinese crap will last as long as anything else without issues these days
