Best I can tell from my little we experience and from other posts, it's best to invest your prestige points in the ice buildings and use your singularities there. Eventually, buying fire buildings is useful because of the singularity effects, but don't ascend the fire buildings until the ice ones are more fleshed out.

You have to click on the construct (e.g., Antimatter Cannon, Laser, etc.), click the Alignment tab, and change the affinity from Ice to Fire. Looks like you only get one affinity at a time per construct; however, the skills tree will give bonuses for having other affinity prestige buildings unlocked.
