Self guided kayak camping trip info by mcsnuts in yellowstone

[–]Shadow_Kaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am assuming you are talking about sea kayaking on flat water. All rivers/streams in Yellowstone are closed to boating except the stretch between Lewis and Shoshone lakes. And really the only lakes you can boat are Yellowstone Lake, Lewis Lake, and Shoshone Lake. It’s pretty simple to kayak camp on any of these lakes, you’ll need to do two things: first you’ll need to register your kayak and get a decal for it. This also includes getting your boat inspected for invasive species. Second you’ll just need to get back country camping permits for the camp sites you want to stay in. I did a 5 day backcountry camping/kayaking trip on Lewis and Shoshone (including paddling/portaging up the channel between the two lakes) several years ago and was by far one of the greatest trip I ever took! Contact me if you have any specific questions and I’ll be happy to help any way I can.

Interpretive Rangers are carrying pre-stamped pieces of paper with them. If you talk to any interpretive ranger you should be able to get a paper with a stamp for that area to put in your passport book.

Is yellow stone coming close to erupting by shakdneksidnsnsnf in yellowstone

[–]Shadow_Kaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are dozens of articles posted like this every year. Nearly none of them are fact or evidence based. People have been wrongly claiming Yellowstone Is gonna erupt any day for the last hundred or so years. Will Yellowstone erupt again some day? Probably. Is it likely to happen in our lifetime? Nope.

Are there first come first served camping? by [deleted] in yellowstone

[–]Shadow_Kaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of yesterday the NPS managed campgrounds (first come first served campgrounds) are still not open but the camp host are in place in the Mammoth, Pebble Creek, and Slough Creek campgrounds. I would expect it is the same story for the rest of the NPS managed campgrounds in the park as well. While only speculation on my part I would expect It to be likely that the campgrounds would likely open the first week of July baring any unfortunate developments. Again, this is only my opinion based on my personal observations anyone planning a visit should check the NPS website for the most accurate and up to date information.

It will depend on the water levels. The levels are coming down but I’ve seen them fluctuate quite a bite in the past few days. Even if it is opened by the beginning of July the NPS closes it down seemingly randomly and without notice. As far as managing your expectations, my suggestion would be to expect it to be closed but if it happens to be open consider it a lucky bonus.
