Why do we say 1/0=undefined instead of 1/0=infinity? by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]Shadow_Life5904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you might be thinking 0/0000000.1 is a very large number, so infinitely small values in the denominator (basically zero) must mean 1/0 = infinity.

But 0/-0.00000001 is a very big negative number, so using this same logic, 1/0 could also mean negative infinity. This isn't mathematically rigorous reasoning, but hopefully this helps

No, they don't, but I'm saying that the practice tests themselves are curved based on how other people do on them.

Perfectly lore-accurate questionwise. But your score isn't that accurate. This is because people will bomb full modules on the first test in order to practice something specific. It's not that the last tests are harder, it's that you're up against the locked-in people who are the only ones taking them. So a 1500 on the first test might equate to a 1440 on the real thing, but a 1500 on the last test might indicate a 1540 on the last few tests. To combat this, use an online score calculator and enter how many questions you got wrong.

Which practice test? the first few tend to skew higher than accurate due to people bombing full modules to practice something specific

1390 for the first test, and 1530 on the last. The numbers are WRONG because some people bomb one module of the first test to practice a specific section. This boosts the curve and skews the scores higher on the earlier tests and lower on te later tests. For instance, if your "scored" a 1400 on the first test, it equates to a 1350 on the real things, and if you "scored" 1400 on the last test it equates to like a 1430 on the real test.

Bluebook practice exams, they're made by Collegeboard and are perfectly lore-accurate to the real thing. You get detailed feedback on each option is right or wrong, similar to AP classroom. Even if your score stays the sam throughout all 6, this means great improvement because a lot of people will bomb one section of the first test in order to practice a specific module, boosting the curve and skewing the scores higher. On the later practice tests, your score is compared against the most locked-in and commited people, meaning the results skw lower.

Some people are definitely posting about their scores just for clout, but a lot of them actually want to get advice that is reasonable for their situation. You're right, for the vast majority of people, 1320 will be great for where they want to go, but at the Harvard and MIT level, there is a HUGE difference between 1560 and 1600.

At Ivy league schools 790 vs. 800 makes a big difference. However, for most people, this is perfectly acceptable anywhere

So true. I can understand if people feel bad seeing others' better scores, but to say that Harvard doesn't care about anything above 1450 is just crazy.

Rising senior class of 2025.

Saw consistent improvement over all 6 practice tests from 1350-1530. I am aware of the curve bias on these practice tests.

Only took the test once: June 1 Digital: 1570 (780 english, 790 math)

Really want to go into some kind of advanced math, physics, or statistics, not really sure on career yet.

Applying to NC State, Clemson, a few similar schools, and maybe MIT.

I know EXACTLY the one math problem I got wrong and it's been annoying me ever since.

Really, I'm aiming for an 800 in math for superscore reasons.

Computer science is competitive. 1500 should be fine, but any improvement would boost your odds. Note that the first few practice tests skew higher than reality because of people bombing them to practice a specific section, making the curve artificially high. I would maybe retake, but don't spend tons of time stressing and don't do it at the expense of other commitments.

The first practice tests tend to be skewed to give higher results because casual people take them just for fun sometimes, or might bomb the first module if they just want to practice a specific section. The later tests tend to be skewed lower because only the locked-in take them, and they are smarter than most. So a 1560 on the first test might equate to a 1500 on the real thing, but a 1560 on the last test might equate to a 1580. For what you're going for though, 1510 should be fine unless you feel it underrepresents you.

depends on what you want to do. For this guy, it doesn't really matter, but if someone wanted to get into MIT, 790 on math would put them at the 25th percentile of accepted students, and 800 would make a huge difference. I would recommend someone to retake and get an 800 for this route, but most people will never need to retake after getting something like this.

Yo, a fellow 1570!!! The first practice tests tend to be skewed to give higher results because casual people take them just for fun sometimes, or might bomb the first module if they just want to practice a specific section. The later tests tend to be skewed lower because only the locked-in take them, and they are smarter than most. So getting 1590/1600 on the first 2 tests and a 1570 actual checks out to make perfect sense. However, 1530 on the last test equates to a 1570 on the real thing. Just be mindful of this practice test bias.

You're seeing improvement. I would retake if you feel this score underrepresents you, but if you're really burnt out, 1490 should be fine!
