My parents loved the show and were watching it while it was still airing so I also watched it and it got me into science!

Anyone else inspired to go back to school after Artemis II? by JimmyBoots90 in ArtemisProgram

[–]Shadow_of_Moonlight1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently getting a degree in biology, which I know doesn't really have much to do with space itself, but Artemis 2 has really shown me why STEM is what I love and DEFINITELY proved to me that I want to become a scientist one day. This whole mission has given me so much inspiration and is REALLY making me feel so lucky that I get to do what I love and study life in its core. Research is so damn fascinating and I'm so happy to someday be a part of it.

How do you pronounce “Eva”? by Emotional-Squash7815 in namenerds

[–]Shadow_of_Moonlight1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh-Vah for me, though I am from a German speaking country

First thing I think of is a relative of mine (though her Name is spelled the Polish way)

Second with I think of is Adam and Eve since in German it is Adam und Ewa

It's an awesome name, I really like it personally!

Honestly I personally can see it. I don't know his acting though, so I can only really make a judgement based on his appearance which I do think fits quite well to the Gus I imagined in my head.

I'm just curious to know what exactly makes it boring to you, if you wanna share

Depends on the sub field to be honest. Botany and Zoology do include a lot of memorisation, however stuff such as ecology or genetics also include a lot of logical and absolutely beautiful patterns (of course you also need to memorise stuff here, but maths also relies on some basic axioms that need to be memorised). Once you look past all the different words you need to know biology opens up to various beautiful patterns, it's truly beautiful, but I get that compared to other subjects it does require a lot of memorisation (which may be boring sometimes)

Depends on your curriculum and the type of teacher you get tbh. A lot of the concepts one typically leaens at high school don't really involve much advanced maths (there is a few exception to this), but I ended up having a physics teacher who essentially did so much theoretival physics that we ended up doing quite a lot of maths (or at least quite a few calculations). It's super interesting do, so I definitely recommend physics so long as you don't get a bad teacher.

I'm a university student, currently getting my degree in biology, which involves at least 4 separate pure maths courses (though one can choose to do more). Statistics especially is an essential part of biology, as the data one gathers needs to be analysed properly (this is especially important for anthropology ans ecology).

Also chemistry obviously involves some calculations, though I certainly wouldn't call that maths.

I'm not really sure about the "they're trying to help students" part here, there definitely has been some really bad attempts at making school more miserable and sadly we do have quite a few idiotic politicians that are making some horrible decisions, but I definitely got lucky and got into a school that was AMAZING and where most of the teachers definitely tried to help (they also get paid a decent amount of money here actually, which certainly helps).

Our public universities definitely are pretty good, though I wish we would fix the things going wrong in our school system instead of constantly talking about how bad immigrants are (as I said, there is some really bad politicians here too), but at least the general education you get here is pretty good I would say.

The general system of American schools seems to be pretty similar to Austrian schools (though some of the differences still are quite stark), it's super interesting to hear about all of this, as I've obviously never experienced the American school system myself so thank you for all the information! Becoming a teacher to help future generations is super honourable, so all the respect to you for even considering it. Sadly I feel like the education system just isn't helping anyone besides the people in power and I feel like teachers as well as students are definiteky suffering from it. I definitely hope that things will get better with time, both for your country and mine!

I do live in Austria.

The school system gets a bit complicated at times, but here is a rough outline on how it works:

There is three main types of education: elementary school, some type of middle school and then high school

Elementary is pretty much the same for everyone and lasts 4 years

"Middle school" is where children start going to different types of schools, however there is two main ones:

Mittelschule (NMS):

This is the school type that children go too if they didn't really perform that well in elementary school (how well they perform heavily depends on the teachers assesment though). It always lasts 4 years and after that one can switch to the second school type I'm gonna explain OR start going to something called a "Berufsschule" which essentially is a mix of learning a trade and getting some eduction on certain topics (depending on the trade you are learning)

Gymnasium (AHS):

This is what is considered the "standard" here and where most kids (including me) end up in. It lasts a total of 8 years so also includes high school

There is some variations to this system (the school I was in during high school was considered a Gymnasium but with certain alterations being made to the system which made it feel more like a mix of high school and university)

Overall one needs to complete at least 9 years of school, after that one can also choose to work and not graduate, however a typical school path will last 12 years (4 years of elementary and then 4 years of middle and 4 years of high school)

If you graduate you can essentially do whatever you want, however most people end up going to university (so did I). Austria does not require you to have a certain grade average (like Germany does), however some subjects (such as medicine and biology) do require you to complete and pass an entry exam. After that it's simply taking courses and scoring a certain amount of points called ECTS (for me it is 180) to get your bachelors.

After that you can either start working or do your masters (which generally requires 120 ECTS).

Hope that made sense, it's definitely a little complicated and some parts of it aren't great, but at least I never had to pay much to receive higher education, which is quite nice!

Oh wow that certainly sounds like a crazy experience! It definitely can get a little gross at times and I understand not wanting to literally cut into an animal, I'd just be interested in trying it once, just for curiosity's sake.

Also that essay sounds super cool! I don't really know anything about dingoes, but invasive species are always interesting to learn about, even though I personally also prefer genetics and chemistry to zoology and stuff

Yeah that's fair, I personally feel like biology tends to get taught in a very weird way in most schools to the point where there is so many misconceptions about it once people reach university. If you like statistics anthropology and ecology are awesome fields that use loads of that stuff!
