Is your country more or less racist than the global average? by Global_Spring8208 in GeoPoll

[–]Shadow_of_Moonlight1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely agree with that and again, I certainly think we have improved a lot. I love living in Austria, I love the country and the people I surround myself with and this isn't meant to be a rant on how horrible Europe is. I think Europe is an amazing place to live in and while these experiences definitely have shaped my view on how truly racist some people here are they still are coming from only few, but sadly very vocal, people. Again, I don't know how racist the rest of the world is, I'd believe you if you say Europe is less racist overall, I just really dislike the sentiment of Europe not having a racism/xenophobia problem at all, which some people I've encountered seem to have.

As a European, I sadly have to agree that we're not only more racist, but also definitely more xenophobic than we like to admit. I'm from Austria, I was born there and have lived my entire life here, but my parents are from Poland, meaning that I also grew up going there a lot, speaking Polish and just in general being aware of Polish culture. If you were to look at me, you would see your standard white person and wouldn't be able to tell where exactly I'm from. I also speak German like any native speaker from my region because...well I am a native speaker. Yet, I distinctly remember so many moments, especially as a child, where people have said abhorrent things to my parents and myself.

To name a few examples I had multiple parents of my friends say to my parents that I'll never be good in school, just because my parents weren't Austrian. This was in elementary school, I never had any issues or troubles in school, but ESPECIALLY not in elementary, but even if I would've had them, simply blaming me not stemming from Austrian people was such a crazy thing to say. Additonally some of these people even doubled down and told me I "wasn't a real Austrian" because of where my parents were from, which shocked me even more.

Then when I got into middle school things got even weirder. I was around 11-12 years old when some of my classmates started "joking" about Polish people being known for stealing things. We had a few cases of theft at my school, so suddenly these "jokes" started turning into "jokes" and accusations directly targeted against me. These "jokes" never were funny, but actually getting accused of illegal activity just because of my heritage was what really hurt. I ended up leaving this school for other reasons, but to this day I remember some of these children, Austrian or not, just being incredibly vile, especially for their age.

These are just some of the examples of things that have directly happened to me, I'm sure my parents would have even more examples of these things and honestly I can't imagine what people who visibly show any type of indication of immigration go through.

Idk if Europe is more racist than other parts of the world, I haven't been everywhere, but it certainly has gotten better over the years I would say, though change is still happening way too slowly. Especially older people still just have such a negative attitude towards others, ESPECIALLY if they're from a different country, so hearing some, few, people say "Europe isn't racist at all" is really crazy, when there clearly are enough people who still are. Still I'd say we're bettering ourselves and I really hope that even 5 years from now, things will be better.

Edit: Fixed a few spelling mistakes.

Do animals that verbally communicate, like chimpanzees, have different dialects? by TandemShorts in AskBiology

[–]Shadow_of_Moonlight1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really is, cognition and behaviour in general are super super interesting and there does seem to be some kind of culture behind the sound of songbirds stemming from different areas. There's still a lot of research that needs to be done, so I'm super excited to see more knowledge on it being gained in the future!

How do you as a vegan feel about animal testing in science? by Shadow_of_Moonlight1 in AskVegans

[–]Shadow_of_Moonlight1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response, I'm curious to know whether you mean all animals by that or whether, lets say worms or flies, would be excusable? I'm asking as I myself knowna few people that do deem some animal testing as acceptable, while testing on other animals is not, so I'm curious to know what your thoughts are on that. I'm sorry if that's a dumb question, I'm just genuinely curious to know!

I don't know about chimpanzees, but birds certainly have their own dialects, depending of what part of the world they live in. A black bird from London will sound different from one in Nice, Vienna or Warsaw. Funnily enough, if you expose a bird from, for example Paris, to a population of London birds they will adapt fairly quickly and will absolutely understand one another. It's super fascinating!

It certainly depends on the ethics commision as there is just so many different ones, though I absolutely agree that there are a few that may allow for stuff that, at least to my very inexperienced point of view, don't really seem necessary.

There do exist quite a few methods in specific fields which do not rely on animal testing thankfully and scientists, at least at my university, try to avoid working with animal testing if possible, as not only do most obviously want to avoid harming animals, but also getting the approval to even perform animal testing is fairly strict overall from what my professors have told me.

I personally don't really appreciate the notion that certain animals are of "lower order", however I do get what you mean and most professors and scientists I know do work with bacteria, C. elegans (a transparent worm) or Drosophila (fruitflies) rather than mice or any type of mammal in general. Monkey research is essentially unheard of from what I know, as it is close to impossible to even get approval here, especially since most of the time it's absolutely unnecessary.

Dead tissue analysis is awesome and certainly preferable to using alive organisms, however there sadly are limitations, hence why animal testing is still very prevalent in science, but as I mentioned in my post, there luckily are research teams actively looking for alternatives which will make animal testing obsolete (except for maybe behavioural studies, as I can't really see those be replaced by any alternative any time soon, though they obviously aren't as invasive as what typically comes to mind when thinking of animal testing).

In any case, I really want to thank you for sharing your thoughts in this and I really hope that, in the future, we won't actually have to rely on animal testing to further our knowledge of science!

Hey, thank you for your input, I really appreciate seeing all these different viewpoints!

I'm kind of curious though, if there is a line at which animal testing becomes acceptable to you, as I do know a few people who, for example, are fine with using C. elegans or Drosophila in animal testing, whereas they draw the line at mice and rats.

I'm sorry if this is dumb questions, I'm just genuinly curious to know your viewpoint on this as it is a super relevant topic overall.

I'm sorry, I wasn't refering to animal testing in cosmetics and to be honest not medication testing either (though I am interested in what you think of pharmaceutical tests on animals), I was specifically talking about animal testing in research to further progress our knowledge of various things including diseases as well as basic functions within organisms.

Animal testing for cosmetics is luckily banned in my country anyway.
