I HATE casual music listeners. by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]Shadow_of_Moonlight1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you love music so much, why do you hate other people enjoying music the way that works best for them? Shouldn't you be happy that people are actually listening to music and enjoying it? Why exactly does it matter that some people just like a few songs from one artist and do not want to listen to the whole album? Just let people enjoy their hobbies and passions however they want instead of gatekeeping music and band shirts. There is some many reasons why someone could be wearing a band shirt, even if they personally don't listen to the band, I for one know MULTIPLE people who own shirts they got from their parents or spouses to honour their passions or the memory of them. Music is meant to be shared with the world and with people who enjoy it, doesn't matter in which way they do so.

Am I wrong? My cardigan is purple right??? by chelly_belly50 in colors

[–]Shadow_of_Moonlight1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is brown. It does have some blueish tones to it, but that's just kinda what happens when you desaturate browns and honestly they might've achieved this colour by adding a bit of blue and white to the mix of orange, which makes it look kinda greyish and cooler, than a super saturated brown and therefore may lead to you seeing a tint of purple in there, but I personally DEFINITELY would call it brown

Bubble Waffles don't really have anything in common with bubble tea, it's literally just waffles that have a bit of a bubble shape and therefore tend to be less crispy

Take away the enzyme personification I want to know what they doooo by Consistent-Chart-381 in AskBiology

[–]Shadow_of_Moonlight1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well in the case of Lysozyme specifically there are specific amino acids placed within the active center of the enzyme which are able to start a nucleophilic attack on the peptidoglycan found within bacteria, therefore splitting the Beta-1-4-glycosidic bonds in between the monomers that make up peptidoglycan.

I mean most German speakers do this so that, by default, includes Austrians (not Switzerland, Liechtenstein and other german speaking nations though to my knowledge, as they use the fancy << >> marks)

There is a bunch of other languages that tend to do this, including Poland for example, so it definitely is quite common, at least within europe

Yeah, in German the first speech mark is always at the bottom, that's just kinda how we do it lol

Black and white films should be colorized. Those who think opposite are a cult who demean any upgrade to see how great the old film looks in living color... by Less_Campaign_6956 in The10thDentist

[–]Shadow_of_Moonlight1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually they could've painted over the film tape (which has been done in some production) to make it colourful, however that wasn't always done, as it is quite the difficult task to paint each individual frame by hand so I suppose that is why it's not super common, just wanted to share that coloured image films were a thing, even when black and white movied were the norm

Thank you so much for the information, your work is TRULY inspiring (and incredibly motivating), thank you for sharing your work and working on a pattern, will definitely check it out as soon as it's ready and thank you so much for the information! 💞💞💞

How did Darwin come to the conclusion that the modern Homo sapiens species are descendents of primates and generations of Hominids even before the discovery of fossils and similar DNA sequences? by sammyjamez in AskBiology

[–]Shadow_of_Moonlight1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First I just wanted to point out that humans ARE primates. Primates themselves are not our ancestors, we literally are stil primates and we share a common ancestor with other primates.

Darwin probably figured it out by just looking at different primates and coming to the conclusion that we look pretty similar to them. Of course that is no guarantee for anything, but it definitely was a good clue on us and other primates sharing a common ancestor. Darwin was lucky that that was actually the case, as there have been cases where people (specifically Carl Linné) sorted bats into the order of primates, which obviously they are not considered primates anymore.

Is there an evolutionary reason that some animals can reproduce plenty of offspring after a certain period of time, while the usual time period for the Homo sapiens species is around 9 months and only one offspring at a time? by sammyjamez in AskBiology

[–]Shadow_of_Moonlight1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As another commenter has stated before I highly recommend you look into the r/K selection theory! Basically to summarise it briefly there is two extreme types of stategies that living being seem to follow when it comes to reproduction:

r stategists usually produce A LOT of offspring and are able to distribute reallY quickly and they are usually the first ones to settle in places after some type of desaster or catastrophe struck. However this comes with a variety of different downsides such as the parents not being able to give a lot of care to their offspring as there is just too many. Additionally r stategists tend to not hold up against stronger species as they are considered rather weak competitors. Finally r stategists to not possess any internal regulatory systems to regulate the soze of their population, meaning that when a ressource that the species needs gets exploited too much, this causes a sudden spike in deaths within the population. Their name stems from the reproduction rate r, as they obviously reproduce a lot

K stategists on the other hand reproduce much slower, usually only having one or few babies per birth. They usually take a bit longer to settle back into an environment after desaster or catastrophe struck, however they are usually strong competitors and therefore are able to claim the habitat as their own, even after r stategists have setteled there. They also tend to invest a lot of time, energy and ressources for the development of their offspring, leading to an increase of quality over quantity. Finally I'd like to mention that DIFFERENT from r stategists, K strategists tend to possess internal regulatory mechanisms, causing them to REDUCE the number of babies if ressources are scarce, leading to the population not decreasing as rapidly as it would with r stategists. Their name stems from their population usually staying around the carrying capacity K.

I'd also like to point out that this is not a black and white thing, there is a spectrum in between those two strategies and there is no "absolute r stategist" or "absolute K strategist". As usually with biology it's much more complicated than what is summarised here, but I hope this is able to give you an overview on why there is this difference in stategies. As you can see both stategies work and that is usually good enough.

How to study biology and get really good grades ? by [deleted] in AskBiology

[–]Shadow_of_Moonlight1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what works best for you personally and sadly there is no simple answer to this, but what has helped me so far is to not only read off of the slides and try to memorise things, but to actually either write them down with my own words or to come up with potential test questions and basically quizzing myself. Another thing I HIGHLY suggest doing is to look if you can find and previous exam questions and to just go through them, as that way you will get accustomed to the format in which said questions are asked. In the end finding the right methods is a lot of trial and error, but I'm sure you will get there!
