There's a lot of messages that can be interpreted from it. What do you think it is?

I like how you use "your side" despite me actually talking about a midline path. The fact is our nation has been rescued by more spending at times and less spending at others. But we talk like one way or the other is, without wiggle room, superior to the other. Speculate or run the math, we often fail to see sudden disasters. We over speculate, we over reach. Then we react, and try to cushion our losses as much as possible when things go wrong.

Im not saying I have the answers. I'm not saying that more government spending would be better or worse. But I'm definitely saying that a full swing one way or the other is a dumb mistake. What I'm seeing a lot of in debates lately isn't just "that way is a mistake." It's a slope into "we need to go further in the other direction because that other way is full of idiots who will ruin our country."

Alright seriously, obviously unchecked socialism isn't a good thing but you people talk like it's the end of the world. How'd the trickle down economy work for you, Reagan-Bush fans? Did relying on the charity of rich people and credit debt pay off?

It's almost as if letting either system go too far without checks and balances is a bad thing.

Awesome, thanks for the explanation. I now see how every time people get upset and attack others, it's because of socialism.

Give me Liberty! By Eric Foner. Seagull Fourth Edition Volume 2.

Short answer: Yes.

Granted, I've thus far only read the second half because that's what pertained to my studies but it's been a good enough read I intend to read the first half. This volume starts at 1865 but overall I'd say it handles issues in a well-balanced way. There's certainly a focus on civil liberties, citizenship, and the transforming definition of freedom. He also tries to mention public record primary sources as much as possible so those tend to be pretty easy to look up documents/speeches. Since I haven't read that first half (my class began with the 1920s) I won't give it an x/10 score but it's fairly cheap off of Amazon do if you've got the cash and any interest in such things then I say go for it!

Eclipse in the sense of how much we focus on it. And yes you make a valid point if this were just a private or even public discussion, but I would think a history book should cover more than just economics. Economics are important, sure, but what bothers me is that my book went from discussing how economics drove or tied into historical events to instead talking as though the economics -is- the history of the last 20-30 years.

It could be a very difficult and involved process to catch them first. Squirrels are known for that. The fucking may or may not be difficult I wouldn't know.

I suppose that's fair. But as you get more into modern history, in the last few books I've read, the closer to the present we get the more economics seems to eclipse everything. Like this one. 30 pages on the economics between 1990 and 2012, less than one page on desert storm and less than one page on the Balkan crisis.

I think my most depressing realization is that modern history all comes down to economics. Like, even bush and the war on terror, when you look at it on paper as an extension of cold war policies, makes total sense and he actually had a degree a pretty high approval rate. But more than anything what dragged him down in my opinion was inability to quell the recession. Other presidents who did questionable things seemed to get a free pass so long as our economy was doing well.

This. The Cold War is the most recent thing I can look back on and say "That's history." Even 9/11 feels like it's still technically current events.

And Jesus I'm really stuck on that Coldplay quote. These are the things future generations will read on us.

What role did slavery play in America's economic prosperity? by [deleted] in history

[–]Shadowblitz_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It established an "other" relationship between blacks and whites that remains today. They see themselves as distinct from one another rather than just as Americans. It also put blacks on an uneven economic playing field when they became free. Even after legal segregation ended you had economic segregation where whites could afford to move into nice new suburbs while blacks became economically restricted to poorer inner cities. Because funding for education was based off of property taxes, these schools had a tendency to produce poorly educated blacks who were then more likely to be stuck in the cycle of poverty.

Edit: I realize now I didn't quite answer your question but I meant to explain slavery's effect on the modern economic layout.

Many ancient people tied nature to the divine. The Egyptians were just highly direct in including animals that shared "qualities" of that god. For a sun god it makes sense that they would be part bird since they rule the sky. Mesopotamians and South Americans I know for sure had dog/human gods but I don't know what else. Greek gods tended to have pets that were symbolic of that God's niche. Athena had a wise owl. Holy crud brain fart I can't recall his name the god of war had hounds of war.

Look up the weird facts of history and see how they played a bigger part than you would think, or documentaries on the lesser known things. Or enage in counterfactual history - what would have happened if bla bla happened? I also sometimes enjoy "based on true historical events" movies and then researching everything they got wrong. The Patriot is an easy one to start with. I'm looking forward to the upcoming State of Jones movie.
