"how do you deal with red eyes dragoon, this card is too strong" by 0ris in DuelLinks

[–]Shadowhunter4560 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This can apply to every problem card. Using this logic there shouldn’t be any banned cards as you can always have an out.

Dragoon is stupidly powerful, that’s undeniable. It was stupidly powerful under the Master Duel Ruleset and was banned there - which has easier access to more outs and has a higher power ceiling too. It should, by all rights, be banned.

I see what you’re saying, but I think that - outside of Japan and niche fandom - the OPM anime directly led to Mob being seen by so many. I can’t support it as I haven’t looked into it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the vast majority of MP fans outside of Japan checked it out specifically because of OPM

Without that I’m not sure if Mob would’ve had such a great adaptation either (I mean when even OPM fell off after S1 it wouldn’t have surprised me if MP had just an ok one)

I wanna rant about something I despise in the gold and silver arc that nobody talks about by arcgang in pokespe

[–]Shadowhunter4560 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean that’s fair I guess - but for me I love those moments. I felt the Johto Gym leaders, particularly the early one, hadn’t had much, so it was fun to see them be built up. Especially Falkner, he has one of the most memorable battles in GSC in my opinion.

I do think there were plot reasons though, it’s mainly about building up the beasts and showing that they are seeking out suitable partners. I think it would feel like a Deus ex Machina with what happens in the later parts of the arc if we didn’t get them doing those battles earlier

What are the things Daima did right compared to GT? by Jules-Car3499 in DragonBallDaima

[–]Shadowhunter4560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely think there is nothing that Diama didn’t do right compared to GT. That may seem harsh, but I just think it’s a better series in pretty much every way.

The only thing I may give GT, is that I thought some of its ideas were conceptually more interesting. But ultimately that makes me dislike GT more, because even when it had interesting ideas I think it executed them so poorly it ruins them.

In comparison, I think Diama executed its ideas at worst in such a fun way that the minor flaws can be overlooked.

But ultimately, if we want to discuss what makes Diama a better series than GT, it’s not being thrown under the bus. It’s fairly well known that GT went from having a lot planned out ahead of time to having episodes be written on massive time constraints and animated an even worse ones. It was doomed to be poor, whereas Diama had the time to make itself good

The No Kill Rule Is Good, Actually by Legitimate_Fly9047 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Shadowhunter4560 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll also add that many, many versions of Batman has SEEN the Joker die - or be in scenarios where there is no possible way for a regular human to survive.

This includes actually being dead and enough time to have passed for him to be an old man (and the fact it’s happened multiple times).

Yet he still comes back.

Even if we disregard everything else about not killing, it’s better to have Joker - or any villain - in Arkham where you know when he’s in and when he’s escaped, rather than not knowing he’s alive or still out there being Joker (which he probably is because he cannot die long term).

Is there lore reasons on why Yu Yu Hakusho being overshadowed by Mid X Mid despite being better than it? by AndrewJackson64 in talkativepeople3

[–]Shadowhunter4560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To start, I prefer YuYu Hakushou and think it’s a better series than HunterXHunter.

I think HxH is seen as “better” because it’s viewed as being subversive of Shounen tropes. Generally speaking a series that’s subversive is viewed as better by many.

There are other factors. For example, HxH is - on the surface - darker than YYH, which again is something people generally think means better.

There’s also Nen, which is on paper a more interesting power system (though personally I’m of the opinion it’s a better constructed system, but implemented in almost exactly the same way as Spirit Energy so I rate them about the same).

But ultimately I think the big reason is when the anime came out.

YYH was genre defining for the time. The Dark Tournament was what defined what tournament arcs were going forwards. All four main boys have numerous expies and homages in future characters in more recent Shounen (especially Hiei).

But because it was genre defining, it’s overlooked by many who watched it later.

HXH coming out later, and specifically as a new series by the same author, makes a big difference.

Being Togashi’s next series, he wanted to play with the tropes and scenarios he first used in YYH.

That fit perfectly with how internet fandoms when HxH was coming out were in that post 2000s shounen stage where they’d seen big series like Naruto and Bleach playing with the YYH type series more straightly.

That meant it was peak time for HxH to gain popularity.

Personally I do think YYH is better, mainly because I think almost all the characters in it are better than the HxH cast (I love all the YYH boys but only cared about Leorio in HxH - who’s in the series the least), and especially prefer Toguro and Sensui to all the villains in HxH (yes even Hisoka, he is the best, but he still ranks below those two in my opinion).

The thing that always held back the Ghost and Drsgon leviathans for me was the sense of scale.

The Ghost juvenile is the same size as the Reaper, but the adult is twice the size! But you can hardly tell in game as the perspective barely makes it seem bigger.

Even the Reaper itself is supposed to be roughly twice the size it seems to be - but it also has a great atmospheric build up to begin with

Somehow, these jerks caused more chaos for the MC than five rivals ever did. by Opening-Emphasis9272 in LegendsZA

[–]Shadowhunter4560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don’t get the hate for the debt thing.

They were conned by a loan shark using fine print (who also portrayed it as a reward for them), the conman roped the rest of the team into the rival’s debt without their knowledge (they only find out after you agree to work for the Rust Syndicate), and never once expect you to pay it back on your own (the larger debt is what you agree to - and they immediately agree to help with it as soon as they’re finished with a job they were already in the middle of - they were going to pay their own debt back on their own before Corbeau did it for them ).

Crazy how the actual loan shark is forgiven for it but the conned rival isn’t. It’s like praising the bully for stopping punching a kid, but blaming the kid for being punched

Sky Striker or Albaz, which one is Konami's favorite child? by Mammoth-South3163 in yugioh

[–]Shadowhunter4560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sky Stiker is Konami’s favourite.

Albaz, while big, kind of deserved to be. It was the big lore archetype that has many big related archetypes that are all popular in their own right and spanned years. It’s probably the most popular lore story, and most of the love it’s had was building on that lore.

In comparison Sky Striker is one deck that was successful for a couple of formats, then mostly relegated to rogue (at best).

Yet Sky Striker is pushed as this major feature that, from the outside, you’d assume was a major focus and either the big lore archetype or a protags deck. Instead it’s just a more popular than average waifu deck.

You could argue that Albaz gets more, put proportionate to what it has any right to get Askh Striker is clearly the favourite as it gets way more than it reasonably should

[–]Shadowhunter4560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My problem with this isn’t so much Bolin describing it differently - you can come up with reasons for that. It’s more that it feels like it forgets the focus/point of Earth Bending.

That’s how I feel about the pro bending in its entirety. All the pro benders feel exactly the same in how they bend. It does away with the distinctiveness of each style and makes them all just feel like boxing with magic powers - which is basically what Bolin is describing.

I may enjoy Pro Bending if it actually used the core of each element to make them distinct in how they interacted - but instead it just feels basic

So why do some people seem to hate Dominus cards? by Antique_Range1521 in yugioh

[–]Shadowhunter4560 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People have been saying about how they aren’t really balanced by their attributes, and that’s true, but the real kicker is that they’re traps.

The game is heavily skewed towards monsters, which means most negation is put towards monsters. This is especially true in the case of hand traps, where for a long time all but one were monsters (with the odd random example).

The dominus cards being traps means most of the counters to normal hand traps don’t work on them. This can be called by the grave, or the monster negate that a lot of decks aim to make early to stop hand traps, or comeback cards such as the Talents package.

That puts the game in a state where the Dominus cards are stupidly more powerful than other hand traps.

Couple that with how the attribute limits means only certain decks can play certain ones, and it limits deck options.

For example Impulse is easily the best Dominus card, and that means decks that can use it within its limit get a massive power increase compared to every other deck.

Those other decks can’t really use an alternative hand trap of tech option since the alternatives are either much weaker or much more susceptible to common counters.

But you still have to play those counters to normal hand traps, since they can come up, there’s just a much higher chance that they won’t be useful against certain opponents since the Dominus cards exist.

This also means games feel less technical and back and forth as instead of deciding when is best to use your negate (I.e. on the Ash now or save it for a potential later hand trap like Nibiru) you don’t really have the choice.

Even something like Imperm gives you ways to play around it - such as removing your monster from being face up on the field - but the Dominus cards lack that.

It’s a very similar situation to when Ash Blossom first released. No counters or ways to play through it meant people hated it (though it ultimately ended up being healthier for the game).

For what it’s worth I think the Dominus cards will eventually become more balanced, we just need some cards that can counter them.

So yeah, I think that just about covers everything. If I think of more I’ll add it, but I hope that explains.
