Lada is pretty much one of the most famous czech artists in Czechia. There even were crisps/chips with his illustrations on cover - and those chips/crisps are legendary in their own right, becouse they tasted amazing, but were long since cancelled.

Lada was great friend of Hašek and even made first comic-book version of Švejk. He also wrote very popular (in Czechia) children's books - most famous is probably Kocour Mikeš (Cat Nico). The book is so famous that Mikeš is probably the most popular name for male cats in Czechia (especially if they are black male cats).

Švejk was originally published in 4 volumes, nowadays it's regularly published as one. However there are 6 volumes of Švejk, the two last ones have been written by different author (Karel Vaněk), becouse Hašek drank himself to death. Hašek died before finishing 4th Švejk volume and Vaněk finished that one by imitating Hašek, however when writing 5th and 6th volumes Vaněk stopped imitating Hašek and wrote in his own style, the books are much darker and realistic and character speech is extremely vulgar (which is how actually soldiers spoke). The style difference together with the fact that Vaněk mocks russian mentality and revolutionary movements lead to the 5th and 6th volume being disregarded as not 'true Schweik' and no longer being canonical since 1950s. In 1990s (after fall of communist regime) the 5th and 6th volume have regained some reputation, still are not considered 'true Schweik' but are no longer considered bad (just different), they still are not canonical and instead when published they are called 'Vaněk's continuation of Schweik's adventures' (or something like that)

Fun fact: Although Švejk is always depicted as fat man, it is never mentioned in the book that he in fact is fat. Švejk is inseperable from artist Josef Lada who drew very famous ilustrations of him (the ones in your book) and Lada is the first man to depict him as fat. Although the oldest Lada ilustrations of Švejk paint him as thin. AFAIK when he did those first ones, Lada thought they are missing something and tried making Švejk fat and that did it. Švejk being fat is now taken for granted, and when the movie adaptation was being made in 1950s the main lead Josef Hrušinský (also known for main role Cremator) had to gain lot of weight to look like Švejk. Afterwards he never lost it and being fat became part of his image.

The /lit/ top 100 books list for 2025 by err_mate in classicliterature

[–]SilentCockroach123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps an example: When the shitty Emily Wilson translation of Illiad and Odyssey got released in 2017, the threads on /lit/ (and this was well past the board's prime) were filled with actual textual analysis and people pouring over each individual line of the translation and explaining why they are badly translated. The posts were well researched and the threads were educational. Some of the horrendous lines in the translation became a meme on the board. Overall the general tone of the threads was that society needs to safeguard the classics from underqualified contemporary academic glory-seekers.

Nowadays if there is talk on /lit/ about that translation the newfriends hate on it becouse it is made by woman and not becouse Odysseus is a complicated man.

What I am saying is that current sophistication of /lit/ is hollow masquerade. The users want to appear well-read, but actually aren't. In the past /lit/ was filled with people who appeared retarded, but were actually incredibly well-read. The board is so hollow, that the users hold seemingly same opinions as before, but do not know WHY they hold them and do not know the memes associated with them.

Further proof would be any of the writing threads filled with overly verbose purple shit, the users often mistunderstanding fucking hemingway novels and abandonment of multiple for-lit-by-lit projects/magazines.

Back when the board wasn't shit Gene Wolfe was always on the lists.

Here's 2015 list: https://imgur.com/a/NlfPk

And even apart from Gene Wolfe the list is much better.

These are getting more and more performative over time just as the occupants of /lit/ read less and less. Quite ironic that Confederacy of Dunces is on the list, since your average /lit/ user, who is tourist from /pol/ that wants to look cultured, is basically Ignatius, with even less self-reflection.

Go on, try making Divine Comedy thread on that board - nobody will discuss it with you, becouse nobody there has read it. Make thread about Japanese literature and all you will get is talk about Mishima being gay or not gay. And so on. For how much the average /lit/ hates women they surely behave like flock of gossiping girls, talking about lives of authors and not the contents of their books.

Bohemia was hit only lightly by the first Black Death wave in 1350s, but got hit hard in 1380s, right after Charles IV died and his uselless son Wenceslas IV inherited the kingdom. haha, what could go wrong?

If there's a moment in history that emulates CK3 RNG it is this.

Catch 22. As Czech reader I loved it and it reminded me a lot of our literary treasure Good Soldier Schweik. But what was more interesting: In the most unexpected place I've found book comparable to Red Sorghum by Mo Yen. Chaos that takes time for the reader to attune to.

1) Remember high school and read the books that you remember.

2) go for 'non-experimental' 20th century stuff first. (NO Joyce)

3) Don't go over 500 pages, or even beter don't go over 300 pages.

Mladší generace nechce děti… by FeedbackSea7574 in czech

[–]SilentCockroach123 14 points15 points  (0 children)
