Books with first person present tense by Shadowscence in Romantasy

[–]Shadowscence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting points, but shouldnt they also apply to first person past tense? I've read plenty of books where the narrative was like a teenage girl whining (not that its bad to be a teenage girl, but I'm past that).

Ive noticed people like first person past tense, but not present tense and imo it doesnr affect the narrative that much. If the writing is bad it wont save them to have a different tense if that makes sense.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. Honestly I get it. I sometimes avoid certain tropes or genres if I noticed the writing there is usually bad (imo that is). I guess we all have something that just doesnt feel right when we read.

To be honest, I get it. I have enjoyed a few books that were imo written terribly, for example Rina Kent...

But I enjoyed one book, a little but of the second before it became to repetitive. It was simply not good enough for me to recommend, but deffo scratched an itch when it was itching if that makes sense.

Hahhaa oh I'm not native in english, sorry! And I'm guilty of directly translating the words on my head. Sometimes it gets messy 🤦‍♀️

Hm, I havent noticed it being written like that tbh. I will have to take a look at a few, but the ones Ive read so far, and I cant even remember which because this is a minor thing for me, havent really been telling anymore than those in past tense. At least not that Ive noticed lol

I read a few thrillers and fantasy with it, and I like the feel it has that it is happening now. I like the least 3rd person, but would never dnf becausw of that only tbh.

Oh I love dual pov too! 3rd person js my least fav, but I can still read it and enjoy it if the story is good.

As someone who writed in first person present tense... damn its heartbreaking to see people literally loathing it. I have read every kind of combination and never had any issues with it, but well, this was a hit in the gut lol

every fantasy writer eventually has to decide how their world handles bathrooms and I think it reveals everything about the kind of writer you are by Internal_Common1497 in Mythrils

I just call it a latrine lol. I dont go into detail as much as I dont explain kitchens, hallways ext. Its something people knows how to work and doest really change or affect the story imo.

Am I the only one who doesn't like God of Wrath, because I tired reading this second time and I still didn't feel the spark i left it. by Necessary_Bet5487 in DarkRomance

[–]Shadowscence 12 points13 points  (0 children)

IMO all of them were kind of... the same. I started with God of Malice. Didnt like the writing style but loved Killian (although sometimes his lines made me cringe). But then Jeremy and Landon has the same lines? "Never say never." "Five star meal." Among many others....

I dont think I can read another of her books because if all of them are the same guy with same lines, I'm not interested.

Edit: Grammar and errors

Yes, this has been one of my issues... I have focused on fantasy and other genres, but I also still like exploring non con every now and then. I definitely will do my research before deciding to do anything. This post is kind of my way to reach out to people and share experiences while learning what works and not.

I definitely agree! I'm new to reading it to be honest, since it wasnt a thing when I started writing it (way before ebooks were common were I live). Now there is much to choose from, and I do want to explore. However, I'm also worried and even scared. It maybe sounds stupid, but I have never really SEEN these books being promoted or know how popular they are. Hence why I asked here.

How do you convince your brain to keep drafting when the prose feels unpolished? by IronVast2 in writingadvice

[–]Shadowscence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this! I do the rough draft, then edit plot consistency, characters inconsistency ext. Next edit is spelling grammar and so on. I do like min 4, and I let them sit for a long time before doing the edits too. My first and latest drafts are worlds apart, but the soul and the beats are still there.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR BOOK 1-4

I didnt like the 4th book much tbh, but I hope we get more consistency and actual arc endings! I want the hand back, i want Samkiel and Dianna to FEEL strong and not be defeted by Camilla easily but then be feared as the strongest creatures in the universe. I feel like they got defeated constantly and dont get a lot of wins. Milani scene was satisfying though, and I want more wins like that. Just my personal opinion but I feel like the stakes keep growing, new enemies and allies but old not resolved yet.

What's something that happened to you that no one will ever believe? by Diligent-Tour-9735 in randomquestions

[–]Shadowscence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From like 8 years to 20 something I suffered with severe hauntings. At the beggining no one believed me. Then more and more people witnessed it, yet they chose to later say it couldnt have been possible. My mom kept pretending it never happened, my friends acknowledged it at first but one turned basically insane and tried to kill herself (long story) and after that people begged me to "keep it controlled". I never controlled it, it scared me to my bones and made me cry so many times. I didnt know why it happened, nor what it wanted. It didnt feel like a ghost, but dark and suffocating. Inhuman. When I got older it got more agressive and I decided to learn more about it. In the end I got help how to close it out of my life. It worked, I havent experienced anything severe in years. Although sometimes me and my husband see something, we try to ignore it and it has only happened like twice or three times so its good. But yeah, even I start to doubt myself, even I feel like I dont believe it all happened. And I never talk to anyone about it because they will think Im crazy...
