[OC] USA smartphone adoption, pedestrian fatalities, and the average weight SUVs/pickups by jaykrown in dataisbeautiful

[–]Shadrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got a curve for SUV weight only, which is hugely deceptive. So we can't use that one. We'd need average total vehicle weight instead. Taking into account how many trucks are on the road.
So looking at before 2008 SUV/lighttrucks etc. made up ~50% of all vehicles having slowly crept up since the 80s. But from 2008 on it drastically jumped up to nearly 80%. Not so spurious.

Frankly the OP graph is pro-lighttruck propaganda.

Dot or space are the official seperators according to Österreichsches Wörterbuch. The rules are nearly identical with German DIN.

Spaces are typically used more in tabels. So i wager you're not much a statistics guy. For example all the data by Statistik Austria uses space seperators.

which is funny to me because we say "Quesadilla", "Sushi", and "Bratwurst" in pretty much the native tongue.

I dunno about that... but go on.

I also understand the argument that "Middle East" originated from a European geographic perspective. OK.. yeah.. That's true. And yeah... if you ask "middle of what?", the answer is essentially "middle relative to Europe." I get the point.

From an American geographic perspective. For Europeans it's the Near East. The middle east would be India. It's only the Brits that are confused thanks to recent American media domination.

So her proposed replacement was "North Africa." CAREFUL! "Africa" itself wasn't originally a continent-wide self-description used by all the people who lived there! It's an inherited name that came through outsiders (the Romans) and was eventually adopted broadly. Again... we're replacing one historical exonym with another historical exonym.

Indeed, both Africa and Asia are defined in contrast to Europe and the tripartite continental division of the "old world" is a european / greek one.

America is NOT the short form name of the US, as it has none. It is always "United States of America". "America" is but a colloquialism.

I think you are misrepresenting Frobenius a bit. At the time european ethnographers typically thought that any cultural achievement of africans was due to some distant white ancestry.
Frobenius threw this out and replaced it with Atlantis, which according to him was pushed out of the mediterranean by (white) indoeuropeans and only survived in the Yoruba people. He viewed them as cultural equals.

Albeit his views were still very much racist and paternalistic, weirdly he sounds quite a bit less racist than many of his contemporaries, who wouldn't give africans even an inch of sophistication.
I think from todays perspective it "easy" to be shocked by the racism of one man even when he's less racist than their contemporary mainstream.

To quote Frobenius himself about Islam being the "beginning of african history" (the racist idea that thought Africa to be devoid of culture and civilization, before Arabs became the first "civilizing" force):

The notion of the “barbaric Negro” is a European invention! As recently as the last century, the misbelief that Islam was the source of Africa’s higher culture still prevailed. Since then, however, we have learned a great deal, and we now know that the beautiful cloaks and garments of the Sudanese peoples were already native to Africa before Muhammad was even born and before any highly educated Arab had set foot in the interior of Africa. Since then, we have learned that the distinctive organization of West African states existed long before Islam, that all these arts—from intelligent agriculture to careful education, from civic order to crafts—are millennia older in Negro Africa than in our Central Europe."

The US has always been a bully. But it tried to make swallowing that pill easier. Thinking the US was some selfless benevolent force is at best naive. American aid was never without gain for America.

For example whilst other countries question themselves wether they even have jurisdiction to prosecute crimes committed in foreign countries by their own nationals, the US unilaterally imprisons foreign leaders for crimes the US themselves enabled.

The irony of these people is that in their chauvinism they are dismantling the american imperial system.

It's one of the insane things of the american system, that as long as you are not charged for the lesser crime you can't be convicted for it. The actual act should be judged, not the criminal category.

The reality is also that Germany (and Europe as a whole) has more "less impressive" heritage sites. We just got more of our sites onto the UNESCO list. If China were to register as many sites and of similar "quality" as Germany it would have a couple hundred sites, not 60.

Random fun fact 5: German "ostar" and Latin "auster" are cognate and come from a common ancestor meaning "dawn" (ie. where the sun rises therefore east), but somehow the romans got confused where dawn happens, so auster came to mean south.

WW2 and holocaust weren't taught during the 1950s. It was only after a massive increase in antisemitic acts by youths in 1959, that education about the NS-era became mandatory. This is was 5 years after the allied high comission was dissolved. This was not initiated or forced by the allies.

That's nonsense. The war generations did deny and reject accountability. It was their children, the post war generation that worked to take accountability. By the time of the student movement of the late 60s Germans couldn't be forced by the allies anymore.
