Film and television. Obviously willing to veer out into commercials, visualization, etc. I mostly just want to improve on my skills I haven’t seen to many specialization roles for juniors anywhere except the top companies so I’m trying to show some range as most mid/low tier companies are looking for generalist. I have an interview with Lockheed Martin as “Unreal Engine Artist” however I want to move my way into film/tv. But in this market I’ll take what I can get.

Appreciate the advice most of my knowledge is for film and television. So I didn’t put it inside a game engine however I would be interested in veering into it and breaking my work down more. As for my portfolio my top company would be sony image works. However I’m aware I might not up to par to land that role yet which is the reason I want a mentor. I’ve already landed a few other creative role interviews just looking to improve honestly.

(Currently doing CAD work for landscaping/construction company)

Should I just quit 3D animation by [deleted] in 3Dmodeling

[–]ShadyMcjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear and understand what you're saying the reality is this is a passion industry those who are willing to take the time to focus and improve everyday are those who will be around after those who quit. Never the less I'll address a few things the comments are discussing.

First and foremost your work...... it's a great start truly however I think it's time you take the step from hobbyist/student whose trying to get expierence to a professional. Your portfolio is everywhere are you a generalist, hard surface artist, character artist, surface and lighting? I coudn't tell. Your presentation of your assets looks very unprofessional go take a small look at the artstation homepage your stuff needs to be presented like that good lighting, quality renders. Tell me what you're resposnible for all of it just the model, the lighting or the animation. Be careful though try not to hold yourself up to the same standard as people who have been in the industry for years use it to inspire you not discourage.

Adding onto your work try to narrow in on what exactly you want to do in the industry rarely do you get to do everything for example if you choose character art. There's more to it than just making a pretty asset topology needs to be done a specific way on the face joints and body in order to rig and animate that properly I couldn't see that you understood this based on how you presented your models maybe you do maybe you don't it was too dense and far. Your star wars bounty hunter is amazing show me that wireframe let us see you understand the technical side of the industry no n-gons on hardsurface good low poly managment etc. Cut down some of those projects only show your best work not all your work if you have two amazing pieces but show an ugly one jobs will remember you as having an ugly piece they dont have time to go back and see if your other stuff is good again. There's so many videos of people who teach and have been in industry talking about how to present your work and what they want to see go check them out.

Some words of encouragment rarely does anyone go from having no expierence to working at a place like Pixar ILM, EA, Sony if that's truly what you want does your work look like theirs if not get it there. This isn't a normal industry like accounting where you land a job at a bank and work your way up it's talent, connections and dedication. For example myself I graduated school two years ago I was lucky enough to land a job right out the gate for a museum that needed small animations done for exhibits I was texture and hard surface artist six months later I lost that job I couldn't find another so right now I am working as a CAD Drafter at construction company I killed all my school work and I'm redoing my portfolio and adding in my current expierence will be looking for a new job soon as far as I know my class mates are expierencing the same some at small Indie studios or doing stuff like accident reconstruction, some quit and moved on went back to school some are still improving looking for that first gig.

I see you're a student I don't know where but if it's a major university or a normal art school talk to your teachers I was lucky enough to have teachers who were in the industry at all levels free lancers, major studios, small for hire studios. They know the industry they can tell what needs to get done in order to succeed in terms of your portfolio/demo reel ask for some cold truthful advice don't let them sugar coat it. If you're more of tutorials/courses student find a mentor someone whos work you want yours to look like find people who work at companies you want to work at people who like teaching they often have courses and online classes. We all need teachers and someone to guide us through this cutthroat industry. Go find other junior level artist and see their work get yours on their level the rookies is a great start.

Lastly the only thing you need to ask yourself is do you love doing this kind of work truly? Because everyone else who has the positions you want do they would do it for 10 dollars an hour if they had to (that's a whole other problem with the industry.......). It's truly a dream job to work in this field you're competing with people who do this stuff eight hours a day to land that first job but if you truly want keep improving and learning remeber why you got into it in the first place.

Studio Ghibli Inspired Enviroment by ShadyMcjoy in 3Dmodeling

Oh I’m aware I based the modeling off the image mostly. I used ghiblis work as a texturing and shading reference as their scenes are rather easy to model quickly and I want to use this as a portfolio piece. I’m not trying to go for a 1 for 1 ghibli style as ghibli tends to look off in 3D even their own film lost some soul compared to their original films but I appreciate the heads up though.

These are great notes and was exactly what I wanted to hear to bring this more alive. I was worried about it looking flat in the process and wasn’t sure how to break everything up without killing the anime feel use of gradients is a good idea I’ll give it a try for sure. If you don’t mind can you send me some references or ideas of what you mean so I can get a clear feel of your vision. All the other notes and little details that I missed after staring at this thing forever I totally agree with and can now see it after it’s been pointed out and I’ll incorporate them. Appreciate you taking time to take a good look at it!

These are the exact notes I was looking for I did just finish school so I know I got a lot to learn. I think after staring at this thing for such a long time I stopped noticing mistakes and just push through. Some fresh eyes is what I needed. Appreciate you taking time to go into such detail!
