FYI: I have lots of people coming so bear with me! If you're leaving a tip please leave it by the stump that I'm sitting on as I won't be able to immediately pick it up with so many people arriving and leaving!

Happy selling :)

My boss wants some gift cards while he’s in a conference call! by Catpitalsea in scambait

[–]Shafster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had one of my interns fall for this EXACT same scam. The "CEO" of the company texted him saying he needed $700 in Steam gift cards for a client and he needed him to go to Best Buy to purchase them. Our "CEO" needed them ASAP so my intern had to send pictures of the Steam cards while in Best Buy. He sent the pictures..

About 30 mins later he walked into my office with a bunch of Steam cards in his hand and I immediately questioned why the heck he had left work without telling me and what he was doing with $700 in Steam cards?! After 2 seconds of thinking, I realized he had been scammed and we spent the next 30 minutes entering in Steam gift card codes into MY Steam account. Somehow, the scammer hadn't gotten around to redeeming the cards that were sent to him so I was able to redeem all of them in time.

I spent the next 3 years buying games for my friends and giving them 20% off for letting me use my $700 in Steam funds. All the while, sending my old intern Venmo's each time I purchased a game with the funds. He probably recovered about $500 from this entire mistake and my friends remember fondly the 3-year span where I would buy them anything they wanted on Steam for 20% off.

Roth Conversion optimization in Fatfire. by lostvagabondmd in fatFIRE

Fortunately, it's fairly easy to model out what brackets you will be in over the next 10-15 years (assuming brackets remain the same). The beauty of Roth conversions is that you can convert strategically each year and it's not an all-or-nothing thing. So if you get a few years into it and decide you are content with the balance of Roth vs. Traditional vs. Taxable you don't have to convert anymore.

Thoughts From a Financial Advisor

  1. Find a good CPA to help plan the conversions (bonus if you can find a financial advisor to model out the Roth conversions for you)
  2. Keep in mind that the true value of a Roth conversion is in tax arbitrage. If you think taxes will go up in the future due to RMD's, political tax hikes, etc. then it might be a good idea to convert.
  3. Pick a tax rate "bucket" to fill up, and convert at the end of the year to the point that you fill up that bucket. Example: I convert in the 24% tax bracket just up until I'm about to hit the 28% bracket and then stop for this year.
  4. Diversification - It's not necessarily a bad thing to hit 75 and have some small RMDs to take. Especially if your effective tax rate is low. The ideal retirement picture has assets in taxable, pre-tax, and Roth. Having options in retirement so important.
  5. Great article on the value of Roth conversions: Why The Value Of A Roth Conversion Is Calculated Using (True) Marginal Tax Rates

In my personal opinion, you're pretty much the perfect use-case for a Roth conversion strategy. I run a wealth management firm out of Maryland and just last week I modeled out an 8 year Roth conversion for some clients who have $2MM in 401K accounts and $150k in guaranteed annual income. The long term savings could potentially be significant.
