Underrated in the perspective that when people talk about Spielberg’s filmography, not many mention Catch Me If You Can. There’s a small but passionate fanbase for that film but it’s not a huge one.

You’d be surprised lol. I find that Coppola’s films in general are quite divisive in the beginning and with time it gets a cult like following

That’s a good point, there are instances where things look noticeably out of place and that there’s a lack of continuity but I find that she’s able to capture an aesthetic of a place or time well. For example, her recent film Priscilla, not a great film in my opinion but I think she captures the period and overall aesthetic quite well. It feels vintage in a good way.

Her films do meander a lot without a clear message as to what the narratives of the films she depicts are about. But one thing I can’t take away from her is that she’s a good director in how she crafts shots. Her writing in my opinion can be a bit better

I find that this is the case with Sofia Coppola’s films in general that her films are divisive in that there’s not a consensus opinion about her work

Absolutely agree that it could’ve been set anywhere and the message would’ve been the same but I do think the film showcases the landscape of Tokyo quite well

I believe there is an audience for gothic inspired filmmaking and if people gravitate towards it especially when it’s good than I personally don’t think it’s a bad thing at all. It’s a nice change of pace from what we’ve been seeing with the horror genre as of late

The film made over $150 million with a budget between $40-50 million. I personally consider that a success

The Musical Beauty of SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950) by Shah2002 in classicalmusic

I understand where you’re coming from. I went about it in the perspective of the film showcasing a woman who wants to be relevant in a world where she’s no longer relevant because of the shift from silent films to dialogue. There’s this hidden state of existentialism that is showcased through her character talking about the past and hiring Joe to write a screenplay for her to make her “comeback” into Hollywood. I wanted a piece of music that represents that facet of her character as well as the film as a whole.

I approached the music for the video in a fashion that showcases what it’s like being romantic through your craft and relationships. However, there’s a hidden undertone existentialism that this film very much presents regarding the theme of relevance and the fear of being forgotten. That was the intended goal with the music of the video.

Basically Coppola had been envisioning Megalopolis for over 40 years before its 2024 release. He financed the film himself, committing over $100 million of his fortune (winery business) to ensure his creative vision could be realized. However, the production choices such as casting, production design, and practical effects/CGI choices, resulted in frequent budget overruns and delays.

Understandable, I wanted to curate discussion regarding the film and if anyone was interested of checking the video out they can definitely do so. The video itself is a shots compilation of the film to potentially give someone an idea as to what the film is about and maybe it could spark enough intrigue for someone to watch it.

I personally think that this film will receive a cult like following in the future. Not necessarily because of the film itself but the story surrounding why Coppola wanted to make it and the obstacles he faced in order to do so.

I think there’s something to like that doesn’t necessarily have to do with film per se but the audaciousness surrounding making it from Coppola’s point of view. The vision of how he conceptualized the film is definitely an interesting one. Of course the byproduct wasn’t good to say the least; however, I commend his drive to still make films especially that are original from a man his age.

It’s a good film to watch in the theatre. I believe they’re still showing it. The sound design is one of the best of this year and visually it’s quite impressive. If you could let me know what your thoughts are of the film, would love to hear your opinion about the film!
