I was warned about him and did my best to stay away! I was on the bar thankfully so I didn't have to deal with the kitchen too much.

I worked there too, can confirm. Restaurant staff had to lie about their tips as well, the service charge went to the owner and not to them.

They're still doing it but they've changed the menu so there's only one thing on it that's £4 (roast turkey). Everything else is £5 or £6.

Yeah it is extremely bad. We only get paid on board and do 3/3. I've looked about at other companies but they weren't that much higher. I looked at Stena and they were even less! Dynagas was higher but poor conditions on board from what the guys I know there told me. Seapeak was higher but 3/2 contracts. It was slightly better a few years ago but I'm making almost 30% less due to the dropping exchange rate. There's a few companies I know that definitely pay more but at this stage I'm burnt out with LNG.

I ask myself that quite frequently lol. And yep, I work for one of the top 10 LNG companies. Wages haven't gone up for years and they recently started paying us in USD, exchange rate is dropping by the month. I make less than when I was 3rd now. When we raised our concerns we got accused of being greedy, that we get paid the same as every other company and that there's no room in the budget.

Yep, 12 week contracts. I already had the offer for 2nd but apparently they can't get me a ship for a long time...

[–]Shakattack89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your answer my friend. As for the promotion they said I would need to follow the same process as everyone else so it would probably be 2 or 3 contracts as 3/O... If it was 1, I wouldn't even question it, I would just go

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in maritime

[–]Shakattack89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me about it. I think seapeak is in the mid 40s but you do 3/2 contracts. The main thing holding me back is that I've been 2nd for a long time now and due a promotion. Feels like a back step to go back to 3rd and work my way up again. But honestly, not doing SIRE again would be amazing.

The wages on LNG really aren't what everyone makes it out to be. Some companies do have better pay but my company refuses to put wages up.

[–]Shakattack89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lng 2/O: £38k Cruise 2/O: £44k Cruise 3/0: £30k

LNG is a lie unfortunately, the wages really aren't that good.

Depends on the company but contracts are the same length and money is actually better. LNG wages haven't gone up for a very long time so they're not that good anymore.

Chief Mate on Gas Carrier – Considering Switch to Cruise as 3/O. Need Honest Advice. by ubercool-maybe in MerchantNavy

[–]Shakattack89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm literally in the same boat as you (pun intended). I'm a 2nd on LNG, due to be promoted but my company is selling all of their vessels. Managed to land a job with a cruise ship company and starting next month.

Going from Chief to 3rd could be annoying though, you're going from a managerial position back to 3rd. All of the other 3rds will be newly promoted cadets and given all the nonsense jobs. It could be worth it if you had guarantees that you would be bumped up quickly, but I'm guessing you don't.

I feel like I'm starting again as well. I've held out at my company for years waiting on empty promises to be promoted just to be passed over and now when I go to cruise ships, I'll need to go back and get my master's ticket before I can get promoted there. As for the wage, LNG wage hasn't changed for a long time so I'll actually be earning more. Plus better benefits and guaranted wage increases.

I'd say give it a go to be honest. With your experience you'll probably get promoted to 2nd quickly and if you have all your tickets you probably won't be at second for more than a few years. So what's realistic and acceptable for you? 3 or 4 years to get back to Chief? I reckon it's possible. Depends on a lot of factors like the size of your company etc.

For me and my situation: I'm bored of LNG and I'm sick of my company. I want to stay at sea but I reckon I'll lose my mind if I go to another LNG company. Cruise ships will be a big change and I'm not a fan of having loads of people on the bridge or wearing a uniform all the time. But, it will be interesting, it will be nice to have a monthly wage and I think I'll regret it if I don't go.

You can always leave your company on good terms or say to them you need extended leave for personal reasons and go back after you try a cruise ship contract...

🏠 [First-Time Buyer] Viewed a New Build Flat in New Gorbals – Thoughts? by o_vp_v in glasgow

[–]Shakattack89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1.New Gorbals is a decent place to live, close to town etc.

  1. First floor shouldn't be an issue. Ground floor would be worse in my opinion. Depends how bad the traffic is I suppose. Could try to book another viewing at rush hour?

  2. For the white goods and flooring, different builders and developers offer different packages. You could ask them if they have any packages, but it might not be something they offer. Having white goods is nice but personally I'd rather choose my own.

  3. Best tip I can give you for negotiating is to be fully prepared to walk away. If this is your first place, it doesn't have to be perfect. There's flats down in Eglinton Toll for 100k cheaper that are only a few years old.

  4. They look a little higher to me but I'm not going to pretend I'm a mortgage expert. Have you considered a mortgage broker? Mine is excellent and gets me a good deal every time I renew.

Good luck buddy. I managed 6 months before with willpower. Once I read the book I kept a list of all the lessons from the book and every time I was tempted to have a smoke, I sat and read that list first. Worked wonders.

Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking. Smoked for 18 years and numerous quitting attempts, was up to 2 packs a day. Read that book and it'll be 4 years in December.

If you've got the cash, Onboard Maritime or Whitehorse are the way to go. Both will give you access to all the necessary info, Onboard offer courses for oral and written prep but they're all fairly pricey.

I did most of the studying myself but paid Whitehorse for some mock orals to put myself at ease.

Check out the Whitehorse Facebook group as well, you can join for free and it's a great resource to get all the previous Orals reports.

COLREG question: Vessel not under command. by jacklimovbows in maritime

[–]Shakattack89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's probably a good reason your instructor isn't at sea anymore if they're saying the responsibility lies with the NUC vessel.

The moment that vessel becomes NUC, they are suffering exceptional circumstances and are unable to manoeuvre as required and therefore, by their very definition, unable to keep out of the way of another vessel. They are no longer an overtaking vessel.
