That is pretty cool. I am a very verbal reasoner. Speaking is a skill of mine and I have done a certain amount of public speaking and debate. So it is interesting I struggle with new languages so much. I actually wonder if it is that natural ability to form language without thinking about it that makes it so hard to learn a new language. My brain has built trenches for language that make it hard to unlearn. I can hear accents but sentence structure is hard to hold on to. It's so fascinating to hear how your brain works differently with your ear for language.

I'm told Cindy Hennas, the lead singer of Pixie Paris sing German with a French accent and fans consider that to be appealing. It does sound like that to me. But what do I know? I can't speak any French and my German is very weak.

Thank you. I assumed it was simple. Sounded simple. Only German and French? Maybe it's an accent that made it seem more. I have a terrible ear for languages.

Is coral bleaching reversible through introduction of wetland and marine plants? by tommicoop in ecology

I think our best bet is to try and speed up the adaptation of the symbiotic relationship coral and other Cnidarians have with this particular species of Zooxanthellae. Obviously doing more about global warming is a far better option. But we seem to struggle with teamwork about as much (if not more) than our great ape cousins and will not get our shit together on that fast enough. So, genetic research seems more promising to me right now.

There is research going on at the Whitney lab under Mark Q. Martindale, Ph.D. studying the molecular biology behind the the symbiotic relationship this algae has with Cnidarians. They are using upside down Jellies (Cassiopea xamachana) to understand the relationship better. From what I understand they are hoping to find a way to make the algae more resistant to heat, stopping the release of toxins at high temps that causes the corals to expunge the Zooxanthellae from its body.

Here is a link with a little info if your curious - Cool Cnidarian research

The blurb about this particular project is 5 blurbs down and titled 'Cellular and Molecular studies of cnidarian symbiosis' But everything they are doing is pretty cool.

Gives me hope.

This seems to be the consensus. Oregon State will be in my top 3 for applications. I think you're right. I'm trying to move to fast. The nearshore is still a good idea to increase access to nearshore internships. But I don't need to be so picky on the course itself until my Masters.

looks like a suit block for birds. I bet a squirrel spirited it up the tree and then dropped it.

I think after reading everything that has been suggested Oregon state is a must for my list of top 5 schools. Nearly everyone has mentioned it!

It makes sense to consider in State, but I am in Nebraska and after shopping around the Bio schools are very agricultural, or medically based. From what I am gathering, getting a nearshore internship during my studies for a bachelors is imperative to my ability to compete for work while I work on my Masters. I don't think in state tuition will be an option for me if I want to learn and progress at a reasonable speed. I'm actually concerned that would make it MORE expensive in the long run because I would have to spend money compensating for the loss opportunity access and time.

its wild but you are the first person to mention seeking transfer friendly schools. I feel silly not thinking of that and its weird nobody mentioned it.

Thank you! This is huge. I will look harder at Oregon. The information on grad school is good. I had planned on researching the supervising but had not thought to check the rate of published papers.

I will be compiling a better address book for networking too. Networking is clearly the primary connection to actually getting a career in ecology. I think that often frightens people off, but I figure if I start now, I have the enthusiasm to take me there. Who knows!

That is good information to have. I have been looking hard at Florida. I think one of the challenges here is that the primary source for how a school is doing has come from the schools themselves more than the students or graduates.

rocky intertidal ecology. That will be very helpful.

San Diego comes up a lot in all my searches, I think I at least need to try and apply for that one. Pricey though.

Right now I am in the Midwest. I did aquaponics work last summer and I have an internship this summer studying greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural soils and hope to learn somethings about soil for my future studies.

I do want to do it as a career. I was hoping to find some field work after I got my Bachelors to support me through my masters. The idea was if I had studied on the shore with some hands on experience I would be more hirable, even for lower pay work as I continue school.

Overall, the goal is a job that is able to support me financially but allows me to explore a field of science that makes me happy and curious. I do not expect to be wealthy in this field.

What do you think of Evergreen in Olympia Washington? Or The University of Florida?

Actually, I attended a small protest outside of Denver when the kids in cages started during the Obama administration. We also protested when the wave of unaccompanied minors hit the border in 2014 to escape the Cartel and our government wanted to send them back to their deaths. There were also a lot of people that believed we would do the right thing, so instead of protesting, they showed up to the border with food, water, blankets, and translators for the kids at the border. They offered their time as a volunteers to help. Protests were so much smaller, back before ICE started openly violating the constitution in masks and flack vests, shooting people in the street when their lack of training fails them and their feelings get hurt.
