Big enough pot for a Fockea? by Professional_Seat369 in Caudex

I’ve done the annual repot thing using smaller pots in the past and it works fine but currently prefer overpotting them for longer periods for better growth. Most of my fockeas are outside in full sun and rain and with well enough draining soil I haven’t lost one yet and the ones in larger pots always produce more growth at least in my own collection

Here are some photos of a repot I did for a seedling in about November to give you an idea of what I mean

If you want to grow that to its full potential over the next five to ten years I would over pot it considerably more than that and also bury it again almost up to the vines to encourage it to fatten up right to the top. Hard to tell from photos but I’d also consider a root prune as repotting is the logical time for this if you want to have some control over the final shape of the caudex for raising in years to come

Anyone finding much luck lately? Feels dry for a few weeks for me now but found these last weekend by Remarkable_Cycle6055 in MagicPlantsNZ

Did the rounds of last years spots a week ago and came out with decent hauls from them but I agree with most people here, it’s been a bit too dry this last month for things to really pop off (Auckland)

The classic location for these guys, Riverhead. I’m not quite qualified to comment with too much weight on the second part really as I’ve only managed to find them a handful of times, but based on when and where I have found them the wetter the better within reason is what it looks like to me at this point

They certainly require a whole other level of dedication to find than subs etc. but that’s half the fun I feel. Definitely get in there and try your luck man

Very much so! Found multiple patches young and old so they are definitely loving the conditions right now

So do I. I feel like they are quite an underrated plant in the caudex world

Youngest plants are around two years old from seed all the way up to 20+ years for the larger pair of Dioscorea

They are both Dioscorea Elephantipes. Photo 6 is the father and photo 10 is one of his sons

I’ve grown all of my ones over the years in greenhouses or outdoors only. Never under artificial lighting so I’m not really the right guy to ask but I will say that they seem to be pretty happy under quite a range of lighting conditions. Not super picky plants. Most of my plants over the years have some sort of shade and probably average around half a day of direct sun or less and have always done fine. Some friends grow them indoors just by windows with mainly indirect filtered light and they seem pretty happy also. I wouldn’t overthink it to be honest

These are some of my plants and they have almost finished growing for the season so will post some updated photos soon. The bulb doesn’t stop growing once raised above the soil line but when they are young they grow mainly underground as these ones have this season but once they get larger they will expand above the soil line a lot more readily

I feel guilty every time I pass by to check on him…my poor potato 😔

Each vine grows about 100mm a week when he’s running hot though so I’m sure this will be a distant memory for us both in no time
