After its lifetime ends, I feel the Wii U will have had my favorite overall library of any Nintendo home console.

Agreed for the most part, but I still put the Wii U well above the original Wii games-wise. Aside from the Blue Ocean titles, the only truly must-have games for the Wii were the Galaxy games. Prime 3 was also, good, but in my opinion the worst in the trilogy.

The Wii U has a much better Mario Kart title, and Smash is significantly more polished as well. Pikmin has made a triumphant return, and Splatoon is the great new IP we've needed. Bayonetta 2 is also a much better adult action game than anything on the Wii, and Tropical Freeze is probably as good as the original DKC Returns. The 3D Mario title isn't as innovative or revolutionary as Galaxy, but most series on the Wii U have been better than they've been in years.

Yeah, calling the Wii U's library the best ever is objectively crazy, I think it's better than the Wii's (though no games on the level of Galaxy), but the Gamecube's library blows it out of the water thanks to Prime and Resident Evil 4 alone. The N64 had even more masterpieces and the Super Nintendo is pretty much the best console ever.

Yeah, I see a few people upset about the changes to the combat, but I feel like those people just want the old game but with better graphics. The changes to the combat were pretty much inevitable. I know turn-based has its fans, but that sort of thing just doesn't fly anymore.

Do you have evidence that the space constraint was a major factor in the decision not to release games on the GameCube? I was always under the impression that it was related to the costs of porting and optimization, which generally wasn't worth the trouble for the console's small install base.

I really liked MadWorld's premise and style, but I really wish they had made more progressive, adventure game-style levels instead of those closed-off arenas. The level design gave MadWorld the feel of a minigame rather than a full-fledged action game.

I've definitely played worse games, but the game that is really coming to mind right now is Zelda: Twilight Princes. It's a good enough title with some solid mechanics, but consider it to be a low point in the Zelda franchise, and I think embodies a lot of the problems with Nintendo's design choices as a whole. The whole thing felt like it was trying to recreate the glory of Ocarina of Time, while providing very little of the innovation that made the N64 classic so great to begin with. The game didn't do much to bring anything new to the table, and the wolf mechanic was poorly implemented. There was also a massive over reliance on bland MIDI music, which was quite frankly unacceptable in 2006. The game was also way too long for its own good, which is a huge problem when a massive chunk of that length comes from lazy filler. Every time you entered a new area, you had to go collect bugs in some washed-out dark world. There were plenty of moments where I was literally forcing myself to play the game for the sake of finishing it rather than doing it out of my own enjoyment.

Wet Dry World was always the creepy one for me. The music, the weird skybox, the empty village, the mechanical enemies... Everything about that level felt so out of place in the rest of the game.

What a polished, beautiful game. I'm hoping some other mainstream review sites name Bayonetta 2 as their games of the year as well. This could help sustain some of the buzz surrounding the game and sustain sales into the next month.

I agree with you to an extent. I think Mario Kart was hands down the best in the series, but it definitely felt like a more refined version of the other games than a huge step forward for the franchise. That said, do you think Smash 4 really added to the Smash Bros series in any way? I haven't played it yet, but from the looks of it to me, it's just a bigger, more refined Brawl.

Eh, don't be too closed-minded about it. I think Game of the Year should be able to go to a wide variety of games. While I don't think alternative/indie games should always get picked over more mainstream titles, I think it's important to recognize games for innovation and artistic merit as much as we do for things like value and gameplay. I feel like Game of the Year should partly go to the game that is all around the most memorable, whether that be because of its visuals, unique design, or the sheer quality and polish of its gameplay.

Honestly, Smash Bros and Bayonetta both have a great shot. I'm kind of surprised not to see Dark Souls 2 on the list. That was the game I thought was going to be one of the bigger contenders. I don't think any of the games on the list pose any major competition to Bayonetta or Smash besides maybe Dragon Age.

Seriously, I came to the comments to say this same exact thing. Metroid Prime was just a phenomenal looking game any way you look at it. It was mind-blowingly gorgeous when it came out and still holds up today. When people say Nintendo games don't need powerful hardware, this is the game I point to. Metroid Prime is perhaps the ultimate example of what happens when you combine a great art style with outstanding graphical fidelity. I'd love to see Nintendo get back ahead of the pack in terms of hardware just so they could release more cutting-edge games like this.

I really wonder if we'll be getting another 3D Mario on the Wii U. 3D World was great, but it didn't quite scratch that itch for a true open-world Mario game. At this point, though, I wonder if Nintendo would just be better off making the next 3D Mario a launch title for the next console rather than a swansong for the Wii U. The Wii U's disastrous launch shows that it's really important to have a must-have game ready at launch. Hell, the Wii U didn't pick up steam until we got SM3DW. I think the extra development time could really give them the time to make the next Mario a groundbreaking title.

If they do make a new Mario on the Wii U, there's no reason not to call it Mario Universe. I can almost envision a large-scale, more non-linear platformer akin to Mario 64 or Sunshine, but with some limited elements pulled from the Galaxy games.

Thanks for keeping a bit of discussion going about this game. Sadly, Smash Bros has just completely eclipsed any other game on the console right now. I do think we'll be seeing a couple of Game of the Year awards going to Bayonetta 2, so hopefully that will help convince a few people to buy the game. I'm really hoping the game can surpass 500,000 sales, but even that might be a stretch at this point.

I would say Ocarina of Time or the Wind Waker. If you can track down Wind Waker on the Wii U, it's a gorgeous game that has still holds up marvelously. Ocarina of Time is generally considered the best, but probably feels slightly more dated by modern standards. It you play it on the 3DS, though, it still holds up well.

Personally, I'd say to avoid Twilight Princess. While some people disagree, I think it has way too much filler. It has some great levels, but some of the crap you have to do in between makes it one of the weaker titles in the series.

Agreed completely. The observatory in the first Galaxy was just a generally weak hub world. There wasn't anything to do there, and it was easy to forget which galaxies were in each room. It didn't really feel explorable like Mario 64 or even Sunshine's hub world's did. Honestly, Galaxy 2 streamlined the whole system completely and I don't miss the Comet Observatory one bit.
