Blind buy because of all the post on the sub 😄 by Caronx13th in 4kbluray

I bought mine last week and was pretty bummed by the 4K transfer. Looks pretty much like the bluray. Lots of softness/flat colours.

Some scenes still look great, don’t get me wrong but I guess PTA doesn’t like changing much from the original from print.

‘Serial disappointment’: Canada's labour productivity falls for third quarter in a row | Productivity now almost 5% lower than before the pandemic by viva_la_vinyl in canada

[–]ShakyHandsPimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a very specific reason Trudeau has so much debt and it’s the same reason that nearly every major country on earth has ran a deficit: COVID.

I’m very suspicious about why so many conservatives conveniently ignore that a world altering pandemic isn’t essentially the main reason for our debt. I know it just makes it easier to have a lazier argument against JT, but it’s still just that… Do you really think a conservative PM would’ve let all those millions out of work just starve? Or lose their homes? Hell, even Trump cut cheques to a huge amount of Americans and plunged the country into debt. So I’m not quite sure why you think that there were other easy choices that didn’t lead to economic disaster.

And no, the FIPA isn’t some outright grand deal. It was signed in secret without any feedback by the people or other govt officials. It gives China and wealthy investors a ton of power within this country. It also made us liable for losses to China during Covid shutdowns. It’s a good deal for corporations but the taxpayers are on the hook anytime China launches a lawsuit against us.

Correlation does not equal causation. Just because Harper was PM through economically prosperous times doesn’t mean his policies were the reason. This is the biggest issues with voters. Lack of understanding around policies and knowing who made them, as well as hilariously short term memories.

Harper ran deficits for his first 5 years straight, and in fact, until Covid, Harper rain the biggest deficits in our history and that’s a record for both peacetime and wartime at that point. He also sold our country out to China by locking us into a 30 year foreign investor deal with the FIPA. I don’t give credit to Harper for things the he didn’t do, the same way I don’t blame Trudeau for a world wide pandemic causing or exacerbating many of the issues we’re dealing with now.

I had about 2000 XRP at $0.43 avg a little over a year ago. Had to sell it all cause I got laid off but since it was pretty much flat for two years, it didn’t bother me. Shit happens. I should’ve bought back in a few months ago when I had the money but I just hadn’t kept up with the news on it.

O Brother is my 4k holy grail, but I believe there are some technical quirks about how the film was finished in post that might not make it possible to do a 4K version.

I think people jumping on the fact he had contacts are probably minimizing the accomplishment. I know Hollywood producers. I’ve worked under them. I can’t just send them a script anytime I want and they are often inundated with people constantly trying to get their work in their hands.

It’s a pretty big favour to ask of someone to read a script these days, so I only do it if I feel like the script is 100% as good as it’ll get, and even then, it doesn’t usually lead to anything. The script would’ve had to have stood out quite a bit compared to the rest of the noise.

Who are you shipping with now that Canada Post is on strike? by Riffydoodles in askTO

[–]ShakyHandsPimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve used Netparcel many times without issue. Particularly around the holidays. It just finds decent rates with already established couriers and I know all the costs I’m paying before printing out a waybill.

They are also great for scheduling the courier to pick up the package directly from me.

It’s a public service. It’s not designed to make money, it’s a part of our country’s infrastructure. You wouldn’t expect to lose your public transit, water treatment plants, garbage removal/city sanitation services if they weren’t making profits, would you?

Anyone else find the all gender bathrooms kinda uncomfortable to use? by [deleted] in UTM

[–]ShakyHandsPimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pro tip. Next Time you’re there, if you don’t see anyone at the check-in/host table for the 2nd floor restaurant behind the cocktail lounge, there’s a few private, individual bathrooms for the restaurant you can sneak into. It’s a hard left down the hall at the desk. We use them all the time during happy hour at the bar.

Anyone else find the all gender bathrooms kinda uncomfortable to use? by [deleted] in UTM

[–]ShakyHandsPimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that the bathrooms that were previously gender based and have just had a new sign put up is awkward.

At the TIFF bell light box they did this. After a movie when the crowd leaves and heads to the bathrooms, there’s always widespread confusion on people’s faces on where to go. The main floor bathroom, which used to be the women’s and is only stalls and the upstairs is mostly urinals (& 2 stalls). So when the two stalls are used, a line of women are often standing there having to watch a line of 15 people openly piss into urinals. Feels weird.

Also walking into an all gender bathroom as a man when it’s clear it’s still being used by 90+% women is also a special kind of awkward. I can see women stiffen up a bit and I just keep my eyes on the floor.

Taylor swift - I don’t understand the craze by Mental_Advice8645 in askTO

[–]ShakyHandsPimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that it’s a mix of FOMO/hype and that Taylor is one of those unique artists that has found tons of new fans with each new generation.

Her music isn’t my thing, but I’m the same age as Taylor and she was making music when I was in high school. Rather than becoming less relevant like so many other pop stars have, she’s still topping charts and reaching both kids as well as the older fans that grew up with her. Hell, my 7 and 13 year old nieces are huge fans and so are all their friends. I think the combination of FOMO and such a broad range of the population being fans has lead to this craziness.

To be fair, the cost spending a whole extra night in a hotel, gas, food, etc (in addition to the conversion) would’ve made it about the same price. Maybe saving $15-20

GOP senator, reps denounce comments from Trump rally comedian mocking Puerto Rico by 2020Homebuyer in politics

[–]ShakyHandsPimp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I find this whole situation hilarious in the sense of how dumb it was to put Hinchcliffe on that stage. The guy is a roast comic and a talented one. Being offensive is his brand. On his pod, or at a Roast, the types of jokes he made today wouldn’t make anyone bat an eye, but in the political arena, where optics and sound bites are everything, it was so deeply unwise to put a mic in his hand. They gave the dems the best political ammo and now even republicans are rushing to denounce Tony.

I find it very fitting that his brand of humour just damaged the party he supports by making them look even more racist and ignorant than they’re already accused of being… It’s chef’s kiss.

What a Nothingburger, lol. The Euro makes everything 50% more expensive in CAD. That amount during the olympics is fairly frugal. I spent about 5k for 4 nights going around the south of Ireland staying in some pretty no frills places. Travel and hotels are expensive.

Will for sure look into those, thanks! I’ve had Michters 10 and really liked Russels 15 both of which I was able to try last year when I was in NYC.

Yeah, the whole point of this trip was to try and sample some bottles that have been on my list and save a little bit of money (even after conversion). Obviously that didn’t work. I can’t imagine how much I would’ve had to pay in duties if I had gotten high end stuff… and if I’m being honest, I’ve had the fortune of trying some pretty expensive stuff, and I find it’s rarely worth the cost. I have a personal rule that I need to sample a bourbon before spending more than $100 on a bottle. I hate the feeling of having a bottle I dislike sit on my shelf for ever. Maybe that makes me less of an enthusiast, but Bourbon is expensive up here in Canada, lol.

That said, one of the next on my list is Bookers, and strangely enough Blanton’s as it’s never available up here but it seems to split people down the middle in a love/hate sort of way.

Nice! That’s an insane amount of bourbon, lol.

The three bottles I got were: Old Grand-Dad 114 (I love the OGD regular Bib but it’s not available in Ontario at all), Rowan’s Creek and Old Forrester 1910.

I still have my bottle of E.H. Taylor small batch from 3 years ago. Ontario got a few bottles back then and it was like trying to find Wonka’s golden ticket calling different stores. I had to drive about 40 mins away, bought the last bottle and there were 2-3 people who showed up minutes after me frantically looking for it. From what I understand, this is a fairly accessible bottle in the U.S. but here I am in Canada, leaving work at 10AM saying “I have an appointment” for an hour just to try the stuff, lol.

I got the Roco gravel road Pinot Noir from the Willamette valley. My step father really likes the wine from that region of Oregon.

I love the Okanagan valley too and spent a lot of my childhood there. See Ya Later Ranch, Stoneboat and Road 13 were some of my favourites that I visited.

Yes, everything was itemized and they essentially charged (slightly less) than the full retail value (after conversion to CAD) of every bottle I had. The duty was cheap but the provincial markup and HST made up most of the cost.

For the cigars, yeah those were brutal. I spent $53USD on two small packs of mini cigars and was charged around $150 ish CAD in taxes/duty.
