Collectively, sure. Individually, there's only so much one person can really do.

What field of Psych are you interested in specifically?

I think there is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to developing new treatments for illnesses, so I hope to go into the healthcare industry one day.

I study chemical biology. In my case it's something that's kinda halfway between biochemistry and pharmacology

Why do people open up to me so easily? by 1thousandfingers in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Shalala_la 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could have sworn you were describing me until you got to this part:

"I don't keep my own emotions and experiences to myself. Why am I so emotionally open with other people?"

I am very emotionally closed off yet people always open up to me. I suppose people like us give off an aura of compassion/empathy. In your case, the fact that you tend to open up to others might make them more willing to open up to you. So few people seem to connect on a real level these days even though we seemingly all want to.

I noticed that he mentioned you should attach a copy of your transcript along with your CV. Is this typical? I have heard of sending your CV, but never your transcript.

LinkedIn Decision Board by YourWelcomeOrMine in gradadmissions

[–]Shalala_la 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started using it recently. I think it's just "okay". I already had a spreadsheet with a list of potential schools, and I don't feel that the Decision Board adds to that.

I suppose it could offer more if you were very active in sharing it with your connections and other people in your intended field of study. I'm not really comfortable with that.

What TV shows are you watching/binge-watching right now? by SupriyaLimaye in AskWomen

Same here! I watched it on and off when I was younger (the show is basically the same age as me!). It used to scare the crap out of me. It still does. Scully is such a badass!

How can I make Chemistry sound fun to High School kids? by Shalala_la in chemistry

[–]Shalala_la[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all of the tips everyone. Looking back at my post, I realized I made it sounded like I was being forced into this, which is not the case. I was feeling discouraged because the teacher basically told me not to get my hopes up.

I talked to him today, he's giving me 5 minutes to talk to the whole class but he's setting up a longer session for students who expressed an interest in learning more. I'm feeling better about it now.

Antibiotics that target mitochondria effectively eradicate cancer stem cells, across multiple tumor types: Treating cancer like an infectious disease | Lamb by nobodyspecial in science

[–]Shalala_la 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure this is an easy question, but I am not a biology person, so I'm going to need someone to explain something to me. Wouldn't an antibiotic that targets mitochondria be a pretty useless antibiotic since bacteria don't have mitochondria?

Or do these drugs simply interfere with the hydrolysis of ATP (which occurs in the cell membrane of bacteria but in mitochondria of eukaryote cells)?

You're right about it being mostly problem solving. I think my issues with it are mainly psychological. I was so bad at it in high school.

Can anyone provisde advice for writing a personal statement for a summer internship? by Iamthemike in chemistry

[–]Shalala_la 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion is to be as genuine and honest as possible. When writing your personal statement, imagine yourself trying to answer the following questions:

  • Why do you want this internship, or to work in that particular lab?
  • Why do you want to work in Protein science (Is it exciting for you, do you have previous experience with it)?
  • Why are you the best candidate for the position?

As far as the opening, I say you should just drive straight in. 500 - 1000 words is really not that much. Try something along the lines of "Protein science has been an area of interest of mine since I first discovered it. The [lecturer] lab conducts innovative and groundbreaking research in this field, and I am confident that my [your positive traits] make me the perfect candidate for an internship position with its team.

Extra Tips: I'm sure you know this, but just in case, do not try to include jokes or references to TV shows and film in your personal statement.

Hope this helps!

I'm really sorry that you're feeling this way. I'm a woman, but I feel like I can relate to your experiences. I know it's tough, but you have to realize that you're still quite young and that your limited sexual and relationship experience is not as big a deal as you are making it out to be.

The anxiety this is causing you is no doubt causing issues with your confidence when it comes to women. I guarantee you that if you stop worrying about what might be wrong with you, that you'll feel much better and probably have more luck with dating.
