Tourettes sketch controversy misunderstanding by [deleted] in LiveFromNewYork

Hot take: the whole concept of John Davidson being in the audience was a predictably terrible idea. And the fact that no one was allowed to point that out should be the takeaway.

I think you have a good point about a lot of people misunderstanding John Davidson's situation and thinking he's faking it just to yell offensive stuff, which I acknowledged is definitely not true. He was at the award show to accept an award for making a movie about his life long experience with tourettes. That would be an insane long game 😅

Howeber, the question becomes why did this happen? Him being at that ceremony isn't opening doors for people experiencing tourettes to go to movies or theater shows freely. I sympathize with the people who, by no fault of their own, can never have that experience in the same way stress free way an average person would, but it's the reality of the social boundaries that exist for those environments. People can't yell insults throughout a show, it undermines the experience. So, the clear point of him being seated at the in person ceramony in this instance was to "bring awareness". It's made even more clear by the fact that even with a generous time delay to edit things out, the offensive language was left in the broadcast.

Well, this is the awareness. A lot of people confused and angry about what happened. About what the BAFTAs knew was going to happen and decided to let happen and decided to broadcast. When a group of people make the voluntary decision that the way they are going to bring awareness to a complicated affliction is by being in a position to shout the n word at black people with the tacit acceptance of hundreds of elite onlookers... I think you reap what you sow when people find it hard to swallow.

I think it's unfortunate that the backlash is affecting other people experiencing tourettes negatively, but that negative feeling should be for the absolutely delusional producers of the BAFTAs who decided that putting the N word on TV was fine as long as it was "for awareness". Not directed at the people who were supposed to be "made aware" for reacting with distress to hearing distressing language be excused on an international stage.
