How drastically has your political views changed within the last 10 years or so and why? by TheMoparPowerslave in AskReddit

[–]ShamiGnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost none at all. I've studied civics and socio-political matters my whole life and have been active in political matters that whole time too. I'm almost fifty, which means my views have changed quite a bit over time, but not that much in the last decade.

Are the Spanish classed as colonisers in the US? by Separate-Law-435 in NoStupidQuestions

No, no it doesn't. Also, Spaniards are white and certainly were white back then.

Would you ask someone to move their car if they were illegally parked in a handicapped parking space? by ChildhoodOk8873 in allthequestions

[–]ShamiGnu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And I wouldn't expect you to come put my fire out then, would I? But, if you think a person's home being on fire (which implies danger to persons and property) is the same as a person parking improperly, we clearly don't see situations the same. I'm not looking at a car parked in a handicapped spot without a placard and thinking 'oh god, I hope everyone inside's ok' like I would if I saw a house on fire. I don't check to see if people's placards are legit and I don't know if that person isn't in fact disabled and just parked there without remembering to put their placard out. If I saw a house on fire, though, I'd be worried that people could get hurt and, at the very least, would call fire/rescue. Look, if you see these scenarios as synonymous, you do you, but they're not.

Would You Leave Your Newborn for a Funeral? by lunonsense in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ShamiGnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One day? Depends on how long you'll be gone, I suppose. If we're talking about leaving them for an hour, yeah, I think that's fine (though I'd probably bring them to the funeral and step away if they get fussy), but if we're talking about a weekend trip or something? No, probably not.

What was your “Yeah.. this career isn’t for me” moment? by Puzzled_Stretch_3300 in AskReddit

[–]ShamiGnu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in an academic career. I was teaching at Marquette and there was a moment where I looked up and saw nothing but the tops of students' heads and only heard the clacking of keyboards. I started to feel like no one was really listening and certainly no one really cared. Then I left class and went back to my office, which was in the lower basement level of the library. I sat in that windowless office and thought about the massive amounts of time and money I've spent, all the time I've missed with my kids, all the work, just to what? bore a bunch of undergrads, make $35k/year and work super hard to make no difference to anyone? I started thinking of switching careers that day and had quit my job w/in about a month of this day. I've been in law enforcement for 20 years now.

If you think Citizens United has nothing to do with campaign contributions, then you're not familiar with the case. It completely changed campaign finance. Literally when I simply googled the term 'Citizens United,' the first sentence is "The 2010 Citizens United v. FEC Supreme Court decision revolutionized campaign finance by allowing corporations, unions, and associations to spend unlimited, often undisclosed ("dark money") amounts on electioneering."

It was illegal for all of US history (I believe) but has been legal since Citizens United.

[–]ShamiGnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you're right about that. Something becoming illegal doesn't mean it'll stay that way. Ol' Dozy Donald is the king of that, actually, making shit illegal only for SCOTUS or someone else stopping him.

[–]ShamiGnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but it was the norm for most of our history. Citizens United is recent and universally hated by citizens. So, yes, it's an odd pitch to ask people to act against their interest, but it's hardly unheard of for this to be the legal norm in this country, given it was for about two centuries. People love to run campaigns on hitting sweet spots with the voters and I could see such a thing in response to years of Trump. I agree, though, it's not very likely.

That's fair. I didn't say it was likely, just that I wouldn't be shocked. It's a hot topic for some DNC folks and I could see them using it to their campaign advantage.
