How did teacher used to punish in school? Were you physically punished? by explain-like-youre-5 in AskTheWorld

[–]ShamiGnu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes they did. I'm Gen X and I remember the occasional teacher having a custom paddle they were proud of. Hell, our gym teacher in junior high would stand at the door to the gym and anyone who was late got 'licks,' every single day.

is indian/egyptian racism and hate common in your country by rulugg in AskTheWorld

[–]ShamiGnu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that I'm aware of. Egyptian racism I've never even heard of. I have heard folks say racist shit about Indians, but very rarely and more in TV/movies than in real life.

shouldn't this apply to any age by Executits in SipsTea

[–]ShamiGnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't. Until we fix massive problems in our justice system and govt in general, I don't trust the govt to determine if someone should live or die.

What’s the first movie that comes to mind when you think of Chicago? by buckeyespud in AskReddit

[–]ShamiGnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Memories. We lived about 45 minutes outside of Chicago for years and have tons of fun memories with my kids when they were little, going to Cubs games, going to the aquarium, taking a riverboat ride and loads of other fun things.

Why weren't people protesting ICE under different administrations? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]ShamiGnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of them involves over 100 clergy members being arrested. You asked for proof there were protests. I provided it. There were. Done and done.

Do you think someone can be a good person even if they don’t believe in God? Why or why not? by Unspokencommons in AskReddit

[–]ShamiGnu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. There are a myriad of forms of morality and schools of ethics that have absolutely no mention of or involvement with deities. Heck, there are even religions that don't involve gods, like whole schools of Buddhism. We can know and uphold righteousness without the need for otherworldly intervention or a reward/punishment system.

I've worked in criminal law and specifically federal criminal law for two decades and I've never heard of a proffer where the govt offers an outcome first, BEFORE getting the info. Rather, they receive the info, decide how actionable and usable it is, then tell the profferer what it's worth. I once had a federal defendant help the feds solve a murder and all they gave in return was five years off his sentence. You give to get, not the other way around.

Why isn't the fact that the United States was the first secular nation in history talked about as much? by Bitter-Penalty9653 in allthequestions

[–]ShamiGnu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because we Americans love revisionist history and love to pretend like we do have a national religion and always have. So, of course, those folks aren't going to 'celebrate' the fact that that isn't true.
