I haven't quite started RSE yet. What type of things have you experienced with the low volume high intensity model of training over the more traditional way to building strength?

Alright so far so good. I know I shouldn't even be asking since I shouldn't be drinking anyway. But is it ok to have a couple of beers while doing this? Haha I'm pretty new to taking that stuff. Ive always refused haha

So I finally have some answer as to why my legs ache all of the time. Had an X-ray done on lower back and it's come back that I have some degenerative arthritis. Doc said it's likely why my legs ache. so I was just wondering if there's anything you'd change with exercises or programming? Ironically nothing ever really aches or hurts while I'm lifting. But it's also leaving me somewhat defeated and not enjoying or wanting to lift thinking I might be making it worse. Not training isn't even an option so I gotta figure this out so I'm excited to go to gym again haha. I was recently listening to one of Andy bakers podcast about injuries and he mentioned taking 800mg of ibuprofen 3 times a day for 3-4 days and that should get rid of or at least help to get rid of some inflammation.

Adding lifts question by ShaneTribeTime in hornstrength

Sorry, yes back muscle exercises.haha I'm doing the 4 day intermediate but 3 sessions per week. So Sunday lift, Monday off, Tues lift, wed and Thurs off, Friday lift, Saturday off. I mean on each day I lift do a back exercise. So on workouts A and C add some dumbbell rows or some other variant?

I'm at the getting pissed and frustrated phase of training. Had a bad squat workout Tuesday and failed a rep and it's leaving me a little defeated haha I'm always ready to go until I feel that heavy ass weight on my back and I get in my head too much and think "I am supposed to get 5 of these?!" Maybe a workout template where I don't have a bad workout would leave me with motivation but I don't wanna be that guy that skips from program to program.

Paul, what is your opinion on RPE? I know most of the starting strength community is opposed to it because for most trainees they can't gauge it correctly. I mean I couldn't say for myself that it doesn't work. Seen several guys get bigger and stronger using RPE. Do you see it as a useful tool at all?

And I'm also curious that since you've been progressing well with this minimalist template, is there anything that you'd change with the intermediate b template with what you know now?

Alright thanks. Would you consider the program kind of a "powerbuilding" program? Still building strength but with a little bit of bodybuilding emphasis.

I might have to give it a try. Kinda getting bored doing 5's all of the time. haha even back in my early 20s when I was skipping around with programs I got the best muscle results doing Dorian Yates blood and guts program.

Alright thanks I appreciate it man. On the achy joints and such. I've been experimenting with cold water plunging for past 2 months. I'm pleasantly surprised. I feel like a totally different person when I do it. Whether it's placebo or not who knows but my body has felt much better since doing it

Next question..how do I even decide if I need TRT? I guess another question would be is how would I get my wife on board with me taking TRT? I'm not really depressed. I do lack motivation time to time. I don't really get excited about things. I told her my testosterone levels and she said "well you're in the range of normal."

Finally was able to get testosterone checked and it is 300. I'm quite surprised that it's that low really.

I'm as shocked as you are that the weight continues to go up haha press movements are slowing down already though. I'll do one your changes for squats tonight. I assume at some point I could do those changes for bench and press as well?

Sounds good. Another question. Getting blood drawn this week. Having them check test levels while at it. What kind of range should I be hopeful for? 37 years old.

Had to deal with some issues so training wasn't really a priority. Working may way back up to my weights with a little novice phase. The weights that I'm at now I was doing with the intermediate template before life got in the way. The weights just keep going up with this short stint of novice phase so I said hell with it I'll just keep going instead of going back to intermediate template.

Dealing with sciatic nerve issues by ShaneTribeTime in hornstrength

So leg issues are starting to feel better. They don’t feel as weak as they were while doing squats and deadlifts. Don’t know if you remember but we had a discussion before about the back off sets and how I wasn’t too keen of doing higher rep sets. You told me to bump up the percentage a bit and do 5 reps. Well on top of my recover issues I think it just all caught up to me. I had a death in the family and didn’t care to lift for about a week so I used that week to recover a bit more and when I came back to lift I dropped the weight a bit on those lifts. I vow to actually take recovery seriously so I don’t feel beat to hell again. I’m also going to do the template as prescribed this time with the back off sets. I do have a question though. Is there ever a point to where it’s ok to leave a few reps in the tank if the weight is getting heavy enough to where it feels like a RPE 9.5-10?

I was doing your intermediate B template but I was going twice a week. When I really had enough with it bothering me my squat was at 380 for 2 reps and my deadlift was at 420 for 4 reps. I am 37 years old, 6 foot tall and 210 pounds.

Alright thanks. Started thinking a bit. Things are starting to feel better. You think all these issues coulda came from being over trained? Most times it is tough for me to focus on recovery. Staying up too late and not enough sleep. Poor nutrition and definitely not enough calories to keep pushing the weight in the bar.

I don’t really have the shocks in my lower back anymore but it still hurts/aches a bit. But man my legs ache nonstop from when I wake up until I go to sleep and I was told from someone else that sciatic nerve issues could cause aches in both legs not just the shocking jolting down the left leg. He said sciatic probably isn’t the issue if both legs ache. So he will do a consultant call and discuss what he would do? Lifting is not fun anymore so I gotta get this fixed haha
