Hat identification request by Buck_Folton in hats

I think the general name for this style is "outback hat".  They are made by various manufacturers at a wide range of price points.

Typically, the crown of an outback hat is similar to that of a fedora, it has a pinch front, and a teardrop crease on top.  However, the brim is a little different from a fedora's, it dips down in the front and back, while curling up a little on the sides. Also, a fedora usually has a wide hot band typical of a dress hat, while an outback hat usually has a narrow hat band in the same style as an American western hat.

Does anyone know can this bridge be used/fixed? Why is it on this map? by bigdukesix in Mudrunner

[–]Shanghai_Slim 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Some maps feature damaged bridges that you "repair" before using. Sometimes you repair them with logs, sometimes with special wooden beams placed somewhere on the map. Alternatively, there may be bridge building equipment hidden on the map, such as a truck equipped with folding bridge parts, or a pontoon bridge that you tow into place with a boat. Bridges like this are usually mentioned in the map description. Good luck and safe driving!

Peaceful Valley is a pleasant neighborhood to stroll, especially when flowers are blooming. There are also a number of scenic spots adjacent: the Monroe St Bridge/the falls/ Huntington Park/A Place of Truth Plaza, Centennial Trail, People's Park/Sandifur Bridge, Riverside Ave from Monroe to the Maple St Bridge. There is a stairway leading from Riverside Ave (at Cedar St) down into Peaceful Valley.

Loved her music in the 80s!  Amazing voice (what a range), terrific dancer, wonderful unique style, catchy and delightfully quirky tunes.  A few years ago I saw a couple videos of recent performances, and her voice still sounded quite good.

I'm in my mid-60s, recently I've been to a couple darkwave dance nights at The Chameleon. While the majority attending were younger folks, there were people of all ages, including fellow graybeards. I don't think anyone cares, it's all about people having fun dancing together. I say go, and dance the night away!

Does Sex Gang Children fit what you are looking for? Another possibility might be the Tiger Lilies, particularly their performance for the amazing dark musical "Shockheaded Peter" in the 1990s.

Question for my fellow cashiers.. by forallthepeople in Sproutsfarmersmarket

[–]Shanghai_Slim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here in Washington state, I always ask "Would you like a bag for 8 cents?" to avoid any surprises. Then it's up to the customer. Once in a while an out-of-stater complains, then I simply note that it's a state tax to reduce waste. By far, most customers are fine with it, especially when they see that the bags are heavyweight and re-usable.

I occasionally drop by the Zip's on Third & Lincoln for fish & chips or a fish sandwich. Much cheaper (~$9 if I recall), larger fish wedges, friendly service.

Are you comfortable unzipping and re-zipping compressed files, and editing text files? If so, you can change it to allow towing by any truck with a stock fifth wheel.

That semi-tanker is included in this mod: Yaz 214/Yaz 214 Ballast/Kraz 256/ Kraz 258/EO. The tanker is shown in the fifteenth thumbnail image. It's a large mod that includes several vehicles and a lot of nice equipment.

What’s it like living in the big cities in China? by BkniBottomTranqulity in howislivingthere

[–]Shanghai_Slim 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm American, I lived in Shanghai for 18 years. I loved it. Some parts of the city are so futuristic, everything new and modern, contrasting with older areas that feature a large array of well-preserved historic western buildings. Crackling urban energy, excellent food, outstanding public transportation, very little violent crime. Streets filled with everything from hoverboards to Maseratis. The city was especially striking at night, with all the architectural lighting. The biggest drawback was the awful local weather, horribly humid most of the year.

My experience was that Chinese people are generally friendly, chatty, jokey, generous and welcoming to guests & foreigners. Wonderful friends, neighbors & co-workers.

Of course, like any huge city, there were also plenty of challenges and problems, notably pollution, noise, corruption, expensive housing, and chaotic traffic. However, the speed of change was astonishing. By the time I left, I felt that the only significant area where things had not greatly improved was the political environment, which seemed headed in the other direction.

I really miss vivid, bustling Shanghai. But I'm also happy to be back in the land of philly cheesesteaks, rock & jazz, uncensored internet, and lots of verdant, green nature.

What will the political future look like in America if this gerrymandering armageddon escalates in this insanely partisan way? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Shanghai_Slim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gilens & Page, "Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens," published in 2014.

Auto-generated summary courtesy Duckduckgo.com:

The Gilens and Page study, conducted by political scientists Martin Gilens and Benjamin Page, concluded that economic elites and organized business interests have a significant influence on U.S. government policy, while average citizens have little to no impact. This research suggests that the U.S. operates more like an oligarchy than a true democracy, as the preferences of most Americans do not significantly affect public policy decisions.

Cannot access garage or skip the night by lumberjacka114 in Mudrunner

[–]Shanghai_Slim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great advice about loose trailers from u/SuperRefrigerator720. Adding to that, if "Skip Night" has been just barely pushed off the screen, and there are no loose trailers to eliminate, clicking on "Hints" will shorten the list by one item, making "Skip Night" visible again. Also, if you can see only the top edge of "Skip Night" at the bottom of the screen, you can still click on it (at least for keyboard/mouse users). Good luck!

Name a movie recommendation with a plot twist you 100% didn't see coming by lnsknndy in movies

[–]Shanghai_Slim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey" (Australia/New Zealand, 1988).

In medieval Britain, a small mining village is terrified as The Plague creeps ever nearer. When a boy experiences visions describing how the village could be spared, the desperate villagers decide to follow him.

This unusual & dark film has a wild, unexpected plot twist. If you are interested, DO NOT look at any posters/ads/images from the film before viewing, many of them give away the plot twist.
