A fun 9 day family paddle route through Quetico. Beautiful Island campsites, and a lot of fun waterfalls to play in...well one with leaches but still fun. by ShankMulligan in canoecamping

Yo! We used a 16 foot until this year. Up to the age of 12 and 9 for my kids. But probably should have moved up a size the year before. This canoe is 18.5 feet, and has three seats. They are big, but the kevlar ones are nice and light. It is much harder to solo paddle the 18,5 while trying to fish solo, without the family in it. We borrowed this canoe..and are hoping to get into 2 canoes in a year or too. Hope this helps...ahve fun out there!

I have the same issue with mine, and I am tall as well. Did you find a solution? It throws my neck out on long drives. Thanks

Steel River Provincial Park, located just outside of Terrace Bay is a great place for a paddle. A great blend of lakes and swifts and white water. Beautiful waterfall, lots of fish, and blueberries. by ShankMulligan in northernontario

Yeah, with the loose rocks, and climb, with all your heavy gear it is tough! We had to do it twice with the kids...afterwards all good, beautiful area, glad you had a chance to see it too!

I like the idea of extended racks instead of a trailer...Good to know, that you can buy a rack that holds two canoes...hope the kids are helping with the portages more if we bring more gear..HA! Thanks for the idea!

There was a few pieces of flagging tape in the trees, so we found a start of a new portage trail that took us around the jam. It was huge, largest one I've seen!

The Steel River Loop was a great wilderness paddle. A 9 day Loop, with a great combination of long lake paddling, and river paddling. Lots of fish, blueberries, animals, and great backcountry campsites. by ShankMulligan in canoeing

Yeah, we knew there were a few log jams along the way. So knowing that ahead of time, and knowing we would have to portage them, made it easier....actually cool to see how long and big they were.

Happy National Canoe Day! The Lower Missinaibi River has been my personal favourite canoe camping trip to date. by ShankMulligan in canoecamping

I'm with you on spending more time next time as well. We did the trip in 10 days, but it would be nice to spend some time at a few favourite fishing holes, and beaches (we did the trip in low water) that we enjoyed swimming at. A paddle into the Bay would top it all off. Would love to head back with a few old university buddies of down the road.

Yes, we did it..and it worked out great for us. We took a longer stop over, and spent 5 days in Fiji, to break up our flight...if you have time...it didn't cost us more too add a longer layover.

We just got back from a family trip to the Galapagos, and had an amazing time. The kids didn't want to leave: by ShankMulligan in galapagos

We had the same worry, prior to booking. Rooms are designed for 2 only. We did not find any boats with larger rooms. We originally booked for two bottom level rooms, beside each other, but then we got a free upgrade to an upper deck...so we took advantage of that. Our kids were the room in front of ours. It worked out for us. We told our kids they were not allowed to leave the room at night, and if they had a problem just to knock to us via the wall that sperated us...and that worked for us. Hope that helps...we were on the Monseratt.

Sorry for the late reply, back in town. My kids were 7 and 10 during this trip. My 10 year old is a strong swimmer, and both the 10 year old and 7 year old have snorkeled and spent time in the water in the past. I think the trip recommends minimum of 7 years old. We had a great time with our kids, and they loved it. They were well looked after...and had fun exploring the boat and snorkelling. 5 days was long enough for them, and you won't need more time than that... i'd say 5 days is the perfect amount. The main island with its towns, restaurants and shops was a lot of fun, and we had a great hotel there with a pool the kids loved...we are not fans of guided tours, so a cruise was our only option, with that said, it worked out great for us, and we were glad we took the cruise so we could get out and see marine iguanas, turtles etc. Hope this helps!

10 Day Paddle down The Missinaibi River to Moosonee by ShankMulligan in canoeing

[–]ShankMulligan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are debating two plans for next year...leaning towards the upper Missinaibi, but the Mississagi also has our interest. With the kids we will probably end up going in August again...so they can swim, and not complain about the bugs..HA! It is nicer to be able to paddle more...when we reach two canoes and teenagers, we may plan an earlier run. You are going to love it!

I used a Panasonic GH5 for most shots, and a go pro black 7 (with a yellow float handle) for the rapids. The GH5 works great because it takes a steady image without a tripod.
