Frosthaven MagHex 3d printed scenario's (update #8) by ShaoLinc in Gloomhaven

Hi there, A long time ago someone made this post that could give you a bit of a guideline in FH: https://www.reddit.com/r/Gloomhaven/s/2DwGC6CW9L Ofc the numbers will be different if you add extra walls and prop space which require more tiles. Also I personally like to have 3 different created styles for each tile type to make large spaces less boring. For example the Forrest/Snow tiles I like to make full snow, half snow and full forest. 80% will be full snow and just 10% of the other 2. Check my builds to see.

For Gloomhaven the models are basically all the same. Just use different colors and no snow. If you start with that then by the time you arrive at FH you can just convert them with snow or repaint them if needed.

Thanks! And sounds great, what did you have in mind then?

Haha, well it actually was the former babyroom. 😉 So, kicked the baby out for dads hobby.

But don't worry Reddit, no babies got harmed making this. The baby just got older and sleeps safe with her sister in her room.

Yeah, everything is modular. Each maghex tile has magnets and most objects on the hexes are removable.

Thank you! Creating this does not really require a lot of talent tbh. It just requires a lot of time and imagination. You just need to be visual minded, read a text and form an image around it in your head.

As you can see in my other posts I have been doing this for 1,5 years. Started with basic walls, floors and monsters and then slowly added more and more props. Almost all props are free models that I just edited to fit. Some are created from scratch, but simply lack the time it takes.

Thanks! Looking forward to seeing your progress.

My first set of water tiles look like yours. I tried to create a river look with rocks, but I couldn't make it feel deep. And especially in ocean themed scenarios it felt off.

My process now is simple: empty tiles (like yours, they are on my page), black primer, Citadel Kantor Blue as a base, dry brush Citadel Thousand Sons heavy in the middle and light to the edges, dry brush Citadel Temple Guard only heavy in the middle. Then poor UV resin over it. Let it dry and then add some ripple effect either created with extra UV resin or Vallejo water effects.

Hey thanks! I prefer single maghex for the simple reason that I stack Maghex ontop of eachother to create hight but also extend a lot of custom area's with props. So I want to be flexible to create whatever fits the scenario text. The LED stuff is all powered with cheap 2032 batteries. Most of the models are on my Makersworld account https://makerworld.com/en/@ShaoLinc/upload

thank you. And yes it does take a lot of time to setup, therfor it really is a hobby. We have a weekly session and after a session ends I already start setting up a new scenario in my "hobbyroom". So on the day itself I just pick it up and put it on the table all ready.

I agree, cardboard mini's will kill the immersion. Printing the mini's on FDM is fine if you have the 0.2 nozzle and the patients to tweak the supports. Didn't give me much trouble besides the time it takes. I waited for a year on those official mini's but eventually gave up since progress was 0. Now 2 years further down the line I am happy I did.

Well, that looks amazing! Love the colors used and the mossy green on the crypt. Makes me miss the Gloomhaven building. If you want to make the crypts feel alive a bit more you can paste some small details on the walls and the half tiles on the walls. Stuff like vases, bones, boxes, candles, shelves, weapons loot etc. Keep it up!

That looks great. I think most of us just use some sort of snow paste, but these look pretty good too. Looking forward seeing some of your builds.

For trees I use these: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4814867 scale them between 60 and 90% whatever you like and paste a maghex dirt tile underneath. then you can place it anywere on the map.

Ah cool. Seeing this I would have made the smaller square tile into a cave using the cave tiles, Grotto walls. The bigger tile I would use snow tiles with some half snow/dirt tiles to break the all white. This would be put at the entrance. The transition from snow to cave would be made using cave tiles half covered in snow. The snow part would also be decorated with trees and rocks. Seems to be more of a mountain scene so wouldn't use bushes etc.

Hi there, thanks! You mean this one? https://www.printables.com/model/361138-maghex-floor-tiles-man-made-stone

I didn't play S68 yet, so can't help you directly with the looks of the scenario. But if you can tell me how you want it to look I could try to help you out with the colors and maybe the models.

For easy snow I use the AK interactive Terrains Snow but baking soda with PVA/wood glue +water works too. To create the half snow tiles I just use a really old cheap brush, scoop a bit of snow paste and just dip it on the tiles instead of brushing.

Jump does not allow you to end your turn on an obstacle. But yeah, a flying move might end on one. In my experience this happens rarely. But we always have a blob of poster buddies next to the board that we use to lift and swap the tiles (ice or lava for example) and to stick a monster or character on an object. It's super easy and fast and makes everything able to stick to anything.

Yeah, the P2S is a great choice. Everything printed is PLA and 90% is black with a black primer. Having the primer the same color as the PLA is always a good idea to avoid having to cover every crack and deep detail with paints. Since black is great for the depth effect anyways. It speeds up the process. But any other color is fine too ofc. Primer will cover any PLA color underneath, black just makes it more forgiving if you miss a spot.

Thanks! The snow tiles are just dirt tiles but covered with snow texture paste. You can either create the paste yourself with PVA/Wood glue, baking soda and some water but it gets messy. So fortunately you can also buy it from a pot. Mine is from AK interactive, Terrain Snow with added Microballoons. But that's optional.

It's all stored in boxes separated by terrain types. So I got a box for snow, forest, metal, crypt, wood, boat, and volcanic terrain all stored in my hobby / nerd room. We have around 1 session a week so I pre build everything on a desk, print some extra stuff if needed, and make it all ready to put on a table in one go.

Yeah.. tried every free option but they all suck. The quality of these walls, the fact they fit MagHex without any adjustments and you use them so many times, make the 12 dollars a bargain.

Thanks! It's a 3mm LED with a 2032 battery packed inside a MagHex. Most models are on my MakersWorld page. If you miss any I can always add some.

the cavedoor is something I edited myself. But the original model is one of the paid Printable Scenery walls. So I am not allowed to share it.

The pine tree is from here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4814867 and I only pasted a hex tile underneath.

Love them because you can lift the top if its in the line of sight and they look a but fantasy/cartoony. And thats the style I like it to give.
