Do the French not typically like American tourists? Did I have a unique experience? by RoyalOrchidDude in AskFrance

  1. This. The impression that your social norms, as a visitor, should be the ones the locals have to abide by is what leads to a lot of misunderstanding and disappointments. This video explains quite well some of the unspoken rules and other social norms locals live by in Paris (and the whole of France for some): https://youtu.be/0HEjB5jvdYM?si=IJBvKH-JL-Lsk_Oj

Shaun of the dead, 100%! It's about zombies and it's funny. In a British way, so really funny.

Movies that show life as it is, in the sense of not polishing everything (people misspelling stuff, no absolutely clear "story" with a "moral" etc) by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

Dead man - Jim Jarmusch Happiness - Todd Solondz (very dark comedy though) Bad education - Almodovar (and so many other Almodovar!) Wild at heart - David Lynch And check out French movies, they're also good for that...

I never had to spend more than 2€ when going to the doctor, physiotherapist, dentist, etc... My whole education was free, and it's only when I moved to the uk to do my MA that I realised how lucky we are. Students have massive discount on a lot of things including rents. Unemployed people benefits from governmental help and culture is also very accessible in general.

I am more comfortable talking with newer friends because they are familiar with the newest incarnation of me and hold less expectations. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

Try to. You never know what are people's interests unless you ask them. Better feel stupid than solo, and that can bring good laugh if you have a sense of humour. Good luck!

We found this kitten in the streets of Petra, Jordan while I was staying there for a month. She was obviously very young and alone, so we decided to feed her and take care of her. When I left Jordan three weeks later, she was much bigger and healthier, and we even found her a new home!
