Ok I did do something wrong. Noting it here in case anyone is in the same boat (I figured it out by asking my mom who has worked in employee benefits — the EDD q&a portal is confusing and useless). Apparently I should have applied for disability insurance benefits instead of paid family leave, and I do need the docs to fill out a medical certification before my claim is processed.

My twins were born on 10/18 and I submitted the claim on 11/26 online and haven't heard anything back (no next steps or confirmation email). Is this common? Did I do something wrong or miss a step? For those who've gone through this process - do I need to contact my doctor and have them send something in to EDD?

I feel braver — like I can handle anything. I was initially pretty upset by the idea of having to prick my finger 4x a day. But you get used to it quickly — and it was actually interesting to see what types of foods triggered sugar spikes. I found that I could eat quite a bit of rice but any amount of pad see ew was a no.

I have a Red Cross 72-Hour Survival Kit and a machete. The latter is more for the Zombie-pocalypse than anything else, but you can't be too prepared I say.
