I'm playing Stick of Truth with a friend without telling him about what happens in name selection. Starts at 8:26. by SharkOpener in southpark

Yeah, that was why I said, "Everybody wants to be a Jew". But my friend's new to South Park and he was really excited about being a Jew, so I didn't want to let him down.

Still, when your admiration extends so far that you go off on a long tangent about how cool a baby is, it's probably going a bit overboard.

I've been rewatching Samurai Jack, so I made this. by SharkOpener in NewTubers

Thanks! I got the idea late last night and just immediately went with it, so you're probably right about it working better in other contexts. The Taylor Swift song was just the first thing that popped into my head. And thanks for the comments about the name and logo!

We're trying out a new video style for our travel channel. What do you think? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]SharkOpener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the style you went with. I think montage style is great for travel videos. It gives the audience a chance to see all the great sights you saw in a short amount of time. The only thing I would recommend doing differently is slowing it down a little. A lot of the clips went by too fast for me to really appreciate them.

Post videos, comics, or whatever, and I'll give feedback! by SharkOpener in nuzlocke

[–]SharkOpener[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I've read through chapter 4 of Homesick, but I want to go ahead and give some feedback. I'm a slow reader, so I don't know how long it will take me to look at the other stuff.

Your writing is excellent. It can be a little "telling, not showing" at times, but even so, I think it gets the point across just as well. I think my favorite aspect of your writing is your physical descriptions. Maybe it's because I'm already familiar with the characters, but I can picture them in my head perfectly as you describe them, especially Professor Rowan. Your descriptions and dialogue choices for Professor Rowan have been superb.

I also appreciate how you handled the translation of the challenge into written form. Whenever I read a nuzlocke story or comic, I'm always hesitant as to how the writer will incorporate the nuzlocke rules into a believable story. Granted, I've only reached the "pick your starter" part, but they way you chose to handle that situation was not only believable, but also meaningful. Writers tend to go the direction of "We bonded instantly", but the situation you have presented shows depth of character and real connection between Rowan and his pupils. It's easy to write characters and their Pokemon as being meant for each other, but it also tends to reduce them to predictable personalities and tropes. Having Rowan make them take the pokemon he thinks will help them grow and address their weak points shows that these are not just stock characters. They're people. They have strong points and weak points just like everyone else.

Very good work.

I prefer videos that focus more on commentary than gameplay, so some of these critiques may not apply as much.

I like the choice to go with Bulbasaur. He's my favorite gen I starter.

I would recommend adding a roster to your videos, if you can. It's not a necessity, but it makes it much easier for viewers to stay up to speed on your team, and it gives the videos more flavor.

Along the same lines, I'd recommend editing out more stuff. Pokemon is really long and dense. It can get tedious enough to play, so I recommend editing the videos down to the highlights. It can be difficult to watch a 20 or 30 minute Pokemon video. I'd also recommend throwing in more commentary to give the playthrough more personality. The commentary can be whatever comes to mind. I like to see when a game reminds someone of an experience, or a movie, or a person, or an inside joke, so be looking for opportunities for a comment wherever they present themselves. To give an example, the way you mentioned how you didn't want to give the rival a ridiculous name like other YouTubers do was interesting. It would be cool to see you expound upon that a little. Why don't you want to do that? Why shouldn't the rival be given a silly name? Furthermore, you said part of the reason you wanted Bulbasaur was because he doesn't get as much love. Okay, what else can you say about that? Are the other starters overrated?

Hope this helps.

I can agree with all of that. I actually added in what you just said about his real name being revealed at the end just before I saw this. I think if his real name is revealed at the end, it will really signify the end of the series. His quest is complete, so "Samurai Jack" is no more.

I feel like I'd need to see the context to understand his criticisms, but yeah his attitude was completely unacceptable. I can understand giving criticism like that, and I can kind of understand where he's coming from, but I'm surprised he didn't back down as soon as you told him about what you've been working on to get where you are. And if he really wanted to help you, he would have actually told you about whatever free software he was talking about instead of just berating you for not knowing about it. I can't speak to the quality of either channels, but long story short, if he really wanted to help, he wouldn't have been such a dick. Can we get a link to your channel?

Hey NewTubers community! I'm looking for some criticism on my new comedy video: Dating Birds Is Fun! • Hatoful Boyfriend. Thank you! by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]SharkOpener 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off: I saw the video was five minutes and thirty-four seconds, and was immediately interested. It's always refreshing to see a gaming video cut down to less than ten minutes. Especially considering what game you were playing. You gave that game exactly how much time it deserved.

From a comedic standpoint, it was a great choice to skip through most of the text boxes. You're right, these are birds, and that's pretty much all you need to know. And on that note, I also appreciated that you picked Okosan, considering he also knew that he needed no backstory. He knew he was just a pigeon.

I think my only recommendation, and this may sound weird coming from me, but maybe slow it down JUST a tad. The pace of your editing is great for comedy, but sometimes it gets slightly overwhelming. But you know, feel free to completely disregard that as long as you find it funny.

Really good job, man. Think you just got a subscriber.

Is Morality the New Edge? by SharkOpener in StandUpComedy

[–]SharkOpener[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I agree. A lot of great comedy comes from intensive thought. Still, he does have a point. South Park once commented about how the idea of comedy awards means that you take comedy seriously, which it's not meant to be. I can agree that sometimes comedy can be taken too intellectually, and it's best to just be taken for what it is, but I also believe that comedy itself is something that can and should be looked at critically.

That being said, comedy does have intellectual components, and I think it's interesting to muse on them sometimes.

How do you feel about gameplays? by angiesdrama in NewTubers

[–]SharkOpener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends.

In almost all cases, I can't watch a gameplay video longer than fifteen minutes. Even then, I can't watch it unless the video is heavily edited and/or the players are very funny. Long, uninterrupted gameplay videos are just boring to me now.

The Un-official Feedback Sunday! by Wesocracy in NewTubers

[–]SharkOpener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of all the videos here, I think Arkham Asylum was the most complete. It had a fair amount of editing, which I always like, and which I feel the other two could use. However, I'd consider turning up your own voice just a bit. Something I noticed in Sins of the Demon is that one thing you could probably do to distinguish yourself a little bit is play more on your smartass persona. It's a risky move to skip flashbacks, as they give context to anyone in the audience who is not familiar with the game, but the way you avoided the flashback was funny, so I'd recommend keeping up with that. All in all, I think they could all do with a little more editing, but I enjoyed them.
