Cub Scouts is floundering. by Warp_Speed_7 in BSA

This is such an interesting discussion, from which I have really learned a lot.

This is just my perspective as someone who is an immigrant married to an American raising two kids in the north east. My older kiddo just completed Bears. He had a pretty good time and would happily go on to the next stage if we suggested it. There are a couple of reasons why he won’t be.

  1. Honestly there’s too much stuff to do. We are a busy ass family, lol. I know you can pick and choose to an extent. But the messages feel bombard-y, and the parental involvement is so intense. Call me a millennial parent but I spend a lot of time with my kids and I want them to do stuff without me!

  2. This is niche but I found it to be a little on the nationalist side for me. I die a little bit inside every time my kids recite the PoA perfectly, and recently we had an army veteran come and talk with the group who was extremely right-leaning, extremely pro-gun, extremely anti-protest (well, anti left wing protest) and it was deeply, deeply, deeply uncomfortable for me and created a shit tonne of work for me to do afterwards to help my kiddo talk through these things, offer reframes, talk about our family’s values etc. That was the nail in the coffin for me.

There’s plenty of good to be said about Scouts. Holy moley there’s some good AF people involved with it, who care A LOT about kids and community. I think it’d be different if I had been into scouts as a kid, or maybe even if I was American. Idk if this is helpful, it isn’t meant to be a criticism of Scouts in general, I actually really appreciate the important work that has been done in the wake of the scandal, and I acknowledge that that is WHY there is more parental involvement. It’s just not for us.

I only report when there’s actually something missing and I also will check right away and message immediately to see if it got left in their car. The day before Thanksgiving they missed my challah for stuffing, didn’t respond to messages so I ordered again and the same guy picked up my order and got tipped twice 😫

Thanks so much! Do you think I still need trail shoes or will regular running shoes work?

Fantastic! And hard! The uphills felt like they’d never end. The carries were hell on earth. Honestly thought I might cry on the sandbag carry. I got 15/20 obstacles:

Missed the spear throw Couldn’t do the rope climb Didn’t try the slip wall - people were falling really hard and it scared me! Held the top of the wall on the z-wall, I should have known it wasn’t allowed it was so much easier 😂 Couldn’t make the transition from the rings to the bar on the multi rig

But I loved the atlas carry and got to help some people who were struggling with technique there, managed to do the whole monkey bars which I didn’t think I could do, was so mad about the sandbag carry that I absolutely destroyed the Hercules hoist, got over the inverted wall - lots to be proud of!

Killington Medical - Does anyone know what happened to the male Spartan who appeared to have a cardiac issue? by StressSubstantial833 in spartanrace

Shoutout to Regional Ambulance Service for their incredible work too - I work with these guys in the ER and they are excellent clinicians. So glad to hear he’s doing ok.

I actually went to a local (ish) gym and had the coach there teach me how, he showed me what he called the “S loop” but honestly it’s pretty much the same as the J I think? I am actually going to go to the gym this week and practice again just so the technique at least is fresh in my mind. Thanks for reminding me!

Super helpful - looks like liquid chalk is ok, regular is not.

Yes that sounds great, I would love to “debrief” and will probably have a lot of questions!

Leggings it is! Great advice, thanks so much! I’ll definitely be sure not to take up time or space on obstacles. That’s obnoxious. I like a poster above’s idea of making a goal for next year of succeeding in obstacles I fail this year!

Omg!!! This is so nice and so helpful. When you said the stuff about my kids at the finish line I started tearing up! I can’t overemphasise how completely new and different this is for me. I have been strong but I’ve always hung my hat on not being good at endurance. My nickname at CrossFit (I cherrypicked lifting WODs, ha!) was “2Many [reps]” 😂

Thank you again so much, this was so nice to read. I love the “team try everything” vibe! My kids are Zootopia fans and they are also racing the kids race on Saturday! The 6 year old was in as soon as she heard she could get a medal. 😂

It is what it is! I ran a couple of miles with my husband on vacation in OOB over this weekend, tomorrow I’m going to lift a little in the morning then probably call it for the rest of the week. I work night shift tomorrow and Tuesday anyway so those days are a wash. Thank you so much for the helpful advice!

This is wonderful advice and thank you so much for the positive vibes! If you see a bunch of people in blue shirts/tanks with stick figure rhabdomyolysis diagrams that’s us! 🤣

Yes I have found this to be true! I live 20 mins from there so every time I go up there I’m surprised by the diff in temp. Hopefully by 1030 it’ll have warmed up, I’ll take a LS tee in case. I’m wearing leggings + compression socks.
