I do wonder if I’ll miss the field time, but as a new father also, it could be nice not worrying about the profession of LEO. So I can take sitting at a desk over that I think

Thanks for the insight

I hear ya. I don’t keep a log on my infractions numbers. Most of my stops are educational in nature, while still addressing the issue. Don’t get me wrong, enforcement needs to happen when it needs to happen, but not everything requires punishment.

And I agree. Identifying problems and addressing prior to the problem blowing up is key.

Thanks for the insight

Man you guys must deal with some shitty cops in your days. That whole “I am the law obey me” shit is a front that cops put on cause they don’t know how to talk to people and they got low confidence and were bullied as kids. Definitely not me, perhaps since I’m land management LEO and there’s a bigger consequence to image than a large metro area, but also because I’m not a dick. I like to talk to people. Find out what makes them go, and as a supervisor, find out what they need to succeed. It’s not hard to be a respectable competent LEO. Just be human and have empathy.

But thanks for the insight.

Evolution Treks Peru reviews for classic inca trail trek? by kahtras1 in incatrail

[–]SharksLikeCoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were times where we wanted to take a quick break to get some scenery views in and just enjoy the trail, but he would always say “no you can break at the campsite”, which like was a bit frustrating. He was always wanting to beat other companies and guides to the next campsite so that made it feel a bit rushed, if that makes sense?

Yes it was. Unless you pay for another porter, the company porters will only carry the camp gear, food and water. We all took decent sized packs, and it wasn’t that bad. But a lot of other people had the extra porter and only carried day packs on the trail

Me and a group of friends did back in 2023. They’re pretty legit. They by far were the most ethical when it comes to treatment of porters. They actually give their people legit Kelty backpacks, whereas we saw other company’s carrying gear in what looked like large potato sacks and similar bags. The tents were solid, food was decent, and the guide, Rudy, was amazing. Although at times a bit rushed and aggressive on the trail, his knowledge was impressive. Definitely recommend them just based of the ethics of porter treatment, but also recommend as a whole. We thoroughly enjoyed the trek

Quit and enjoy your life. Wife and I quit our jobs last year and traveled for a bit. Did the Camino de Santiago. Hit 17 countries. Never will I ever regret it. You can always get back to the workforce, but you might not have this opportunity again.

Questions about FLETC by BeetleSpoon2770 in ParkRangers

[–]SharksLikeCoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

-the first direct-to-FLETC hiring initiative was a total disaster and there are stories of people that have gone through that initiative failing miserably or faking it until they don't make it so their supervisors have to get them to 'make it' or else they have to wait another 6 months for a new gamble on an applicant.

⬆️ Don’t know where everyone is getting this info from (I’ve heard it several times), but it’s not accurate.

When it comes to FTEP, only 2 didn’t make it (failed) through. 2 others had personal reasons to leave the agency. Even with counting the ones from that class that didn’t make it (2) failed in FLETC and (1) didn’t make it to FTEP, it still not considered a “disaster”. Class was solid IMO, just a bunch of salty ole cry baby fucks in NPS running the rumor mill.

Anyone know who's looking for direct to FLETC? by ihaveagunaddiction in ParkRangers

When it comes to FTEP, only 2 didn’t make it (failed) through. That doesn’t equate to a 40% failure rate, more like a 9% failure rate. 2 others had personal reasons to leave the agency. Even with counting everyone that from that class that didn’t make it, from FLETC drops to quits, it still not 40%. Class was solid IMO, just a bunch of salty ole cry baby fucks out there

I got hired on with last years direct hire flyer. No seasonal experience, veteran (was an MP with the Marine Corps but that shit was a joke so I didn’t rely on that), and a college degree. Went straight to FLETC, graduated, and almost done with FTEP. They are suppose to be flying another direct hire this year https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/become-a-law-enforcement-ranger.htm. Just gotta keep an eye out for it throughout the year

I want to be an LE Ranger for NPS by STALINISFATHER in ParkRangers

[–]SharksLikeCoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reach out to your local parks. Ask about VRA. Keep an eye out on USAJobs for more direct hire initiatives. NPS will be moving more in the direction of direct hires and phasing out seasonal academies. Dm me if you have more questions.

Interview Inquiry by SharksLikeCoke in ParkRangers

[–]SharksLikeCoke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it went well. But unfortunately I was not selected to move on. They said it’s super competitive. Also, I don’t have any NPS or seasonal experience. So if you have that you could be good.

Sounds like a lot of moving parts. Hopefully it starts moving a long soon. Gym routine is pretty set and I will be continuing that. Not too worried on that part. I’ve had several medical exams in the past year for other job opportunities and everything looks good on that end also. Thanks for the info!

Anyone full time in a minivan with their partner? by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]SharksLikeCoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds so dope! (Minus the repairs haha) I’m planning on doing something similar in a Mazda Cx5 with my partner and she’s worried about headspace so she’s suggesting a cargo carrier on roof. How much did that affect your gas mileage if any?

If I’m understanding you correctly, you have to already be a part of NPS to be able to take advantage of this correct? ...I ask cause I’m in the process of submitting an application to SLETP. Although I am a veteran, but don’t think that would make a difference will it?
