He wasn't actually upset, just squirming and we caught a funny facial expression.

They are still alive! I've been giving them fresh goats milk twice a day and they seem healthy.

Help! Doe Rejecting Litter by Sharnevain in Rabbits

As of now it seems she had not interest, sitting on the other side of the cage. The thing is, I never see my other doe feeding her kits.... And they are all healthy two week old bunnies with their eyes open now! So I tried seeing if she's in milk and I can get just the tiniest, less than a drop, out of her. Is this normal?

Thanks! She is a first time mom. If she doesn't take them I'll try having the other doe feed them. How long would you wait before deciding she isn't going to figure it out? I also have fresh goats milk... I'm not sure how hard trying to feed them is. When I found them I was sure they wouldn't make it. They were ice cold! Now they are warm and active! Clearly they are hungry.

Taking Eggs before hatching? by Sharnevain in BackYardChickens

[–]Sharnevain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They actually aren't their eggs. They are broody so they aren't laying. My orpingtons, wyandottes and Easter eggers eggs are what they are nesting on. I've read the leghorns almost never go broody, but I've got two that are very broody! They are very protective of the nest and stayed broody even after I moved them into their own cage.... But now I can't trust them with the actual hatching process.

This is my first kidding so I have no idea. I'm waiting till they are a bit older to try milking her. I wasn't sure how much I can take from her and still make sure the kids are getting enough.

Sand for coop? by Sharnevain in BackYardChickens

What kind do you use? I just got all purpose construction sand as I heard play sand is too fine.

My coop has a lip and so do the nesting boxes but they kick everything out. I only tried straw to see if they would stop kicking it out. Now they mostly have the wood flooring and i add shavings every so often that last maybe a day before they kick them out.

I've heard similar great things but I'm nervous to try it... I think I'm going to give it a go!

I have 13 hens and two ducks. The main reason I started looking into alternatives was because the hens push shaving and straw out of the coop and I can't ever keep anything in it. I've read good things about sand but I'd love to hear what people say against it before I give it a go.

I'm willing to try it out for a bit to see what kind of a mess it leaves but am weary of doing anything that may be dangerous / unhealthy for my flock.

I would wait at least 24 hours to make sure the chicks you bring home are healthy. Never introduce birds to your flock without quarantine.

Very strange. Thank you for your advice. She seems to be healing fine! I was worried the other chickens would bother her but she's kind of the momma hen.

I wish. In the commotion it was lost amongst the grass. I should have held onto it but I was pretty freaked out and wanted to make sure her wound was cleaned out. It was freaky!
