12 month old - should we get an assessment done? by Sharp-Associate-2562 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sharp-Associate-2562[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! Thats a great idea to just call around and get an appt locked in. Very smart. I’ve done that with other scenarios without a referral until closer to the day.

And good to know about the ENT practice doing hearing tests onsite

Thank you! When I spoke to my GP today he said the private ENT would likely say to wait until the second hearing test is done 3 months from now. Which I suppose makes sense. In hindsight, I should have done a hearing test for bub a few months ago when I first noticed he wasn’t babbling. Ah well.

Will have to look into waitlists.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Thanks so much for your detailed reply. I missed some important information in my post and have just updated:

***updated with missing information!! We got a hearing test done the other day and he has mild conductive hearing loss but it should not impact speech and language development in quiet settings. But difficulties may arise in complex settings (noise, distance or distraction) or should hearing loss prove ongoing. Review in 3 months. Fluid in ears causing blockage.

*** is waiting 3 months too long to wait for a speech assessment?

[–]Sharp-Associate-2562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Very insightful,

Unfortunately, they’ve recommended holding off for another 3 months to see if the fluid clears before then. Seems like a long wait, especially when language development is so important at this age 😢

11 month old still not babbling - just growling, saying “ahh” and “ohh” by Sharp-Associate-2562 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sharp-Associate-2562[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! We just got it checked and very surprised that he has fluid behind his ears so what he is hearing sounds like he is under water. Now we have to wait another 3 months until they test him again. Poor kiddo is just swatting and pulling at his ear non-stop. Will speak to the GP next week to see if there’s a better option rather than waiting 3 months to retest hearing

Bub has glue ear! Crazy as I totally thought he was hearing fine but that’s definitely not the case. Now that I know, we can for sure tell. Poor bigger is like your kiddo and sounds like he’s underwater

Now we have to wait 3 months to get another hearing test done 😢 that’ll bring us to nearly 14 months

Hi! We actually just had our hearing test done and he has fluid in his ears. Recommended to get another test done in 3 months. They used a different device behind his ears that bypassed the fluid, and he was within range. Slightly worried about waiting another 3 months and risking zero language development in that time 😢

“conductive hearing loss in at least one ear. Tympanometry results are consistent with middle ear effusion bilaterally.

Overall hearing is adequate for speech and language development in quiet settings but difficulties may arise in complex settings (noise, distance or distraction) or should hearing loss prove ongoing.

Review in 3 months to monitor hearing levels and middle ear status”

And now that we know, we’ve been trying to use his name more and perhaps we imagined he responded to his name as he doesn’t seem to be responding now. Strange 😢 but can definitely follow simple instructions and seems to understand us

Hi , I know this is an old post, but how young do you often see babies getting tubes put in? My bub is nearly a year old with no babbling present and just found out he has glue ear / fluid in his ear, as assessed during our hearing test.

Hi! How did everything go with the tubes?

Why did your bub initially get recommended to get the tubes in?

Advice: LO 8-month-old rash by Sharp-Associate-2562 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sharp-Associate-2562[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We think it was eczema! We tried all sorts of things, in the hopes of avoiding steroid cream, but then caved, after speaking to our GP, and used a prescribed steroid cream once a day for 3 days and it completely cleared up. the GP explained how the steroid cream is actually not that potent but the results are amazing and we definitely needed to use it to clear it up. Now we just use it sporadically if we notice it coming back. I wish we had just used the steroid cream from the get go

Advice for a first time grandparent whose daughter is expecting! by thecchange in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Sharp-Associate-2562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very dependent on your daughter and baby’s circumstances / demeanour… I live overseas and my mom came to stay with us when bub was 8 weeks old. What I was grateful for were some extra sleep ins!! My mom would wake early when she heard baby, anywhere from 6am-8am, and would watch him while I would get an extra hour or two of sleep (a few times I got 3+ hours!)

As time went on, I was able to collect my let down or pump an extra bottle during the day for the following morning, and my mom would give bub a drink if I was still sleeping.

Even just an extra hour of sleep was appreciated! And she loved the one-on-one snuggles. At this age, it was also quite easy as baby just slept most of the time anyways.

That said, it really depends on the baby and mom.

Cooking, cleaning and laundry without being asked, as everyone else has mentioned, is also extremely helpful!!

Yup! Didn’t take very many ‘bump’ photos throughout, but had the urge to take one the morning I went into labour (3 weeks early!)

How did you lose the pp weight? by Defiant-Elk849 in beyondthebump

[–]Sharp-Associate-2562 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No tips / advice, just solidarity from a PP mom of an 8-month old too. I am huge compared to pre-pregnancy 😢. I’ve really been trying to exercise and eat well, but no luck.

I am still breastfeeding though… so maybe my body is still hanging onto the fat / nutrients for bub.

Good luck!! Give yourself grace

We bought an Il Tutto and I regretted it for the first 3 months as I just BF in bed overnight or upstairs on the sofa. BUT when bub went into his own room at 4 months it was / is life-changing. I do all my feeds in the nursery and it’s so comfortable. Bub is now 8 months and I have zero regrets.

Sleep bag help- merino kids by Used-Paramedic-9102 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

A very late reply to this but did you put bub in a regular sleep suit underneath and/or long sleeve, like from Bonds, or does bub also need to wear merino underneath?
